Emirates Has Wi-Fi
Emirates Has Wi-Fi
07/06/2004 12:07 PMEmirates airline uses Wi-Fi to connect to Tenzing service: Tenzing had
hoped to make Emirates the first Wi-Fi equipped airline to offer
Internet access, but Lufthansa and Boeing beat them by a few weeks.
However, Emirates is the first airline to use Wi-Fi that was built
into the plane during construction. The Airbus A345 was delivered in
December with Wi-Fi ready to go. The equipped planes fly from Dubai to
New York, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, and Christchurch. Tenzing's
current generation of service is quite slow compared to Boeings: a
maximum of 128 Kbps. Emirates is using their email-only service as
well, which provides access just through a proxy to email accounts.
Tenzing's next-generation service will increase to about 450 to 900
Kbps in both directions, or even faster depending on an airline's
choice of options; it's due in 2005....

02/10/2004 04:43 AMAP - An Iranian airliner with about 60 people aboard crashed Tuesday

Emirates, according to television reports that showed flaming wreckage
and rescue helicopters landing nearby.
Tenzing Scores Emirates Deal
Tenzing Scores Emirates Deal
01/09/2004 09:52 PMTenzing, which offers airplane email access, will offer an onboard
WLAN for Emirates Airlines: The service will use planes' existing 2.4
Kbps satellite connection so will only allow passengers to send and
receive email, not Web surf. Tenzing says that limitation will make
the service less expensive for passengers--around $20 for a long-haul
flight compared to Connexion By Boeing's $30 for similar flights.
Users must download a client before they take off and the service will
support most POP3 accounts and some corporate VPNs. This isn't an
extremely attractive offering. If someone is willing to pay $20 to use
email onboard, they're likely willing to pay $30 to reach the Internet
and use any email. Plus, it's a hassle to have to download a client
before you take off....
