Wind Farm - Growing 150-ton plants in

Wind Farm - Growing 150-ton plants in
the sky
03/20/2003 04:22 PMWind power had a record year in 2002, with 6.8 gigawatts of
new power taking the combined worldwide total to 31 gigawatts. Only
five years ago, 75% of that capacity was not even built yet, and the
generating capacity of individual wind power turbines was a measly 150
kilowatts. Today's standard wind turbines pump out 2-3 megawatts
each, and yet more powerful and efficient prototypes are already being
tested. Wind power is advancing quickly, that's clear. At a recent
alternative energy conference in the US, Christopher Flavin,
President of Worldwatch, stated that "Wind Power is breaking
into the mainstream," and that it will be "the lowest-cost electricity
within the next few years." Today, so-called Wind Farms are
"sprouting up" all over the world. Recent innovations have even made
it possible to install the first wind power in Antarctica, where
the average windspeed is more than 25 mph, and can gust to 150mph.
These "fortified" windmills are smaller and shorter than the 2-3
megawatt models, however. A full-sized windmill stands more than 50
meters high, and that makes them quite difficult to construct.
I visited a "growing" wind farm last year, one that was about
half-way finished, and was given a tour of the site by the
construction manager. What follows is a short pictorial account of
my site-tour, and a description of the processes involved in changing
a fallow, rocky coastline into a productive wind farm.

"Canon" Turns Plants, Flowers Into
Speakers
07/17/2004 12:54 PM
The Music Bird Corporation has developed a
fantastic new product that is only slightly tainted by their ad-copy
flim-flammery -- the "Canon," a series of vases and flower pots that
actually use the leaves and flowers of plants as speakers. The Canon
(a play on Japanese words for flower ("ka") and sound ("non")) uses an
acrylic tube to vibrate the flowers, adding directionless sound, which
the creators of the product admonish "raise[s] the healing effects" by
adding the missing fifth dimension of sound (I hadn't realized flowers
had any healing effects at all, besides mending broken hearts.
(I'm puking, too.))
The Canon vibro-vegetables will be available in limited quantities
this month for prices between $45 and $450, in a variety of styles.

Speaking of FCC
leaks, looks like the Sidekick II -- note the T-Mobile 'Sidekick'
branding, and not 'Hiptop' -- is approved for FCC use, which means
among other things pictures and user manuals have been revealed. It
looks similar to the unit we posted a few months ago, but it looks
like the camera on the back might include a flash, to which we say
with no shame at all, "Oh, snap!" (Okay, maybe a little shame). Go
ahead and dig around on the FCC site and see what you can find and
we'll do the same. Let's just hope and pray that camera is 1-megapixel
plus.

available. Boing Boing posted an
inaccur
ate rant from AaronSw about it; you actually can run your own apps
on your own Hiptop. But it's still a problem that only
T-Mobile-approved apps can be downloaded. It's increasingly clear that
the cellular industry needs to be vertically disintegrated just like
wired telcos and ISPs. People also need to learn that "unlimited"
plans are part of the problem since they incentivize carries to screw
with their customers to limit network usage. I'd much prefer an
uncensored pay-per-bit plan (or Paris Metro Pricing).

Sidekick II: More Danger == More
Applications?
08/05/2004 08:45 AM
A bit of interesting chim
cham from one Mr. Brahe, of One
Internet Lane: Apparently, while futzing around with the new
Sidekick II in San Diego, he happened to pick up on an important
difference between the old model and the new: While user-submitted
programs for the first Sidekick had to be approved by T-Mobile
(something they were seemingly reticent to do, like, ever), Danger,
creator of the Sidekick (nee Hiptop) have wrested control of
user-submitted applications back, making one critical difference
between versions: the new model will likely have more of what people
really want: applications.
Of course, one Internet Semistar does not a source make, but if
we'll follow up with Danger and see what we can find out.

More on EV-DO and the color Hiptop
More on EV-DO and the color Hiptop
03/21/2003 12:13 AMRich Brome of PhoneScoop
writes in with some comments about the color Hiptop and Verizon's new
high-speed 1xEV-DO cellular network:
The color Hiptop will
have a 65,000 TFT display. The Danger people told me at CTIA they have
(had) various prototypes will all kinds of displays, but they have
settled on the high-end TFT they were showing at CTIA, which I thought
looked pretty good. Not the brightest, but very clear, colorful, and
easy to read in most lighting.
The 1xEV-DO network set up at CTIA was a temporary one, and with so
many temporary 3G networks of all types set up for demos for the show,
the whole city was one big interference nightmare. There were just too
many companies trying to put up extra temporary antennas on the roof,
etc. - so that THEIR demo worked, other demos be damned. Everyone had
cell phone problems the whole time (ironic, but it happens every
time). There were many outages.
So I'm not at all surprised that the speed of the 1xEV-DO network
didn't impress. In a real installation, the network would be optimized
and interference issues would be worked out through months of testing
and tweaking - something that was not possible just for CTIA. In
Verizon's long-running tests in San Diego and Washington, the speed
has been quite impressive.
Dissing the HipTop
Dissing the HipTop
03/20/2003 08:30 AMA reader who wishes remain to anonymous wrote in to say that he's
played with the new color HipTop from Danger, and that's not all that
hot:
I saw a pre-production model while out in CA, and if
the production model follows the same specs, it's got a *terrible*
washed-out LCD display. Dual-scan, not active. Like you'd find on a
toy. Given the cheap plastics and lousy build quality of the current
units, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if they do cheap out on the
color ones, as well.
