Broadband Over Power Lines

Broadband Over Power Lines 03/06/2004 01:56 AM

Cinergy plugs in as Web provider: I can't even comprehend how this works.

A unit of Cinergy Corp. today will become the nation's first electric utility to offer high-speed Internet service to customers via its power lines, turning every electrical outlet in homes or offices into a Web connection.

One of the problems with broadband is that cable companies have a virtual lock on the infrastructure necessary. Thank God the power companies can join in now, because they're so much more trustworthy.

Amateur emergency radio is all about helping out, quickly, dependably, and without charging fees, in a time of need such as terrorist incidents and natural disasters. Now some ham radio operators, who have evolved from a network of high-tech hobbyists to a Federal Communications Commission-regulated radio service, are worried that a recommendation for proprietary software and hardware for the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) may close out communications and communicators.

NPR on Radio Interference

NPR on Radio Interference 05/26/2004 12:09 PM
NPR reports on interference among legitimate radio uses: Morning Edition reports on conflicts between legitimate uses, such as a baby monitor poorly made that was appearing on military and AM/FM radio (they pulled the monitor off the market). It also explains how broadband-over-powerlines (BPL) might have an impact on licensed amateur radio. The excellent report covers how the FCC is improving its testing methods to observe interference....

Low Power FM Religion Radio 04/06/2005 11:57 AM
Religion radio co-opts low power FM. Remember the fight over low power FM? It was supposed to help establish community radio stations. It seems that some Christian broadcasting stations have been snapping up low power FM licenses to implement translators, which extend the broadcast area of their main signal. Some groups have been speaking out about this, yet the FCC only acted after it appeared that some of the licenses were being obtained fraudulently for resale. (via Jorn)
