The Tech Vulture

The Tech Vulture

The Tech Vulture 01/08/2004 08:21 PM

Liquidator: 6,500 tech firms among 'walking dead': Interesting story about a guy with a sobering job. Doesn't bode well for the tech firms.

Amid rising hopes for a high-tech turnaround, there's this sobering sign: Martin Pichinson — a man who has buried nearly 150 failed startups since 1999 — has swooped into Silicon Valley like a vulture lurking over a pack of wounded animals.

Pichinson, a self-described "doctor of reality" who helps liquidate companies, says he wouldn't have moved from Los Angeles to Palo Alto a few months ago had he not smelled more high-tech trouble looming.

Staff and User Technology Training

"Two technology trainers from the St. Joseph County Public Library in South Bend, IN, will discuss how they motivate staff and library users for technology training, including Internet basics, Web searching and applications. How do we engage our learners? How do we design training that carries with them back to their desks or homes and translates to useful skills. Session will include examples and a sample training module."

Women Into Tech, But Not Into Tech
Jargon
09/07/2004 05:03 AM
While there have been some stories in the past suggesting that women are just as into gadgets as men, a new study in the UK suggests that even if that's true, they're not as on top of the gadget jargon as guys. Nearly all women in the study (96%) said they "lacked confidence" when a discussion turned technical, and most claimied they had no clue what words like kbps, ISP and googling meant. Only half of the women surveyed knew that 512kbps was approximately 10 times faster than dialup, while nearly 80% of the guys did. Of course, it wasn't so much lack of knowledge, but lack of concern. When asked about their broadband connection, women generally said: "It works, it's fast - that's all I need to know."

That Other Big Tech IPO

That Other Big Tech IPO 05/10/2004 04:31 AM
The massive rush of news surrounding Google's pending IPO must be painful for Marc Benioff at Salesforce.com - which represents the "other" big dot com IPO of the year. Benioff can't talk about the IPO because they're in their "quiet period", but if you've seen some of the publici ty stunts he's pulled off, you know that he can't stand being out of the spotlight. So, he let a reporter follow him around for a day and just tried to avoid talking about IPO related stuff. It's an interesting read, and talks about the success of Salesforce.com so far, while still being skeptical about its overall chances.

Return Of The Tech IPO

Return Of The Tech IPO 12/18/2003 02:13 PM
There have been a bunch of similar articles lately, but it appears that tech IPOs are starting to heat up. Most of the IPOs that are going out (and the pace is increasing) seem to be doing well (though, Orbitz was a bit of a clunker). More and more companies are at least lining up to go public next year. The profiles, though, are a bit different than they were in the boom years, and look a lot more like what a typical IPO should look like: a profitable company that has a long enough track record to understand where the business appears to be heading. These are less speculative IPOs and more expansion IPOs, which seems healthier. Meanwhile, the biggest hitter on the IPO bench is, of course, Google, who may be timing their IPO with the presidential election season, noting that (surprise, surprise) the economy seems to get a lift during election years.

We've already written two different stories about Marty Pichinson, the "dot com cleanup guy" who made quite a name for himself after the bubble burst in shutting down and liquidating failed dot coms. Now that the economy seems to be picking up, you might think that Marty is looking for a new line of work, but he believes that things couldn't be better in the liquidation business as he's quite sure that there are a large number of "walking dead" companies that aren't going anywhere. In fact, he recently moved from LA to Palo Alto since he expects to be quite busy in Silicon Valley over the next few years. I'd bet he's also smelling the latest dot com bubble, and expecting that it will pop soon.

Thanks, Bloggies! BB wins best group

03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing pal Scott Beale informs us that our blog just won Group Weblog of the Year at the Bloggies. OMG! What a huge honor! Thank you, Bloggies. We honestly didn't expect this, and we are deeply moved and grateful. There were many other deserving blogs up for awards, backed by talented folks who work very hard, and we raise our collective pirate-eye-patches in their honor: check 'em all out. On behalf of my blog-mates Cory Doctorow, Mark Frauenfelder, and David Pescovitz; our wise "band manager" John Battelle; our sysadmin par excellence Ken Snider; and the rest of the team and extended family that makes Boing Boing possible -- a humble thank you. But most of all, we are grateful to you, our readers, for wasting otherwise productive time on our collective scrapbook of "wonderful things," and for pointing us to even more of those wonderful and undiscovered things each day. We're really sorry that we couldn't make it to SXSW in person to accept the award, but we hope you'll join us in celebrating in person tomorrow at ETCON ( all five of us will be in the same place for the first time). Boing Boing sprouted online a little over five years ago, from paper zine roots planted by Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair. It is a privilege to blog for you. With you, we look forward to another adventurous year of link-discuss to come. Link

Update: Holy crap! Reader Nathaneal Heasley sez, "Not only did BB win best group ‘blog, it won “blog of the year/best weblog overall” – congratulations!" For those keeping track, this is the second year in a row Boing Boing has received these two awards: Link to 2004, Link to 2005. Man. We're speechless, and overwhelmed by your generosity.

Excilan in Bankruptcy

Excilan in Bankruptcy 04/16/2005 02:35 PM
Hotspot payment system provider enters bankruptcy, halts services: I obtained information yesterday that Excilan, a Luxembourg-headquartered firm that offered a unique method of payment for hotspot services, has entered bankruptcy in that country Friday. The service will halt operations Monday at noon local time according to details I received. Excilan allowed cell phone users at a Wi-Fi hotspot to enter their number on a gateway page and receive a confirmation call that they could use to agree to pay for the service. Customers of cell operators that hadn't agreed to work with Excilan were granted short, free sessions which Excilan used as a market-research tool to find partners. I don't know the details of why the company has gone into bankruptcy; they were privately held. The company has been remarkably upfront about its usage, however, posting statistics on its home page. The most recent quarter saw 7,098 sessions, which at the highest possible commission and split might have meant just a few U.S.$10,000s. Sean O'Mahoney joined the firm last year as CEO. O'Mahoney was formerly a founder and the CEO of Vancouver, B.C., Canada's FatPort, which was an early Excilan partner. I was unable to reach O'Mahoney for comment since obtaining the news....

The Motley Fool notes that the CEO (a smart guy that I met when he served on a panel I moderated last year) and an SVP were removed from their positions but remain on the board. The chain has lost a more than 200 stores out of 760 in 1999. But don't blame it on the Wi-Fi....
