Two new wireless Pocket PCs from Asus

Two new wireless Pocket PCs from Asus 11/18/2003 12:42 PM
A couple of new Pocket PC from Asus, the MyPal A716, which will have built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, and the MyPal A8100 (pictured at right), a Pocket PC Phone. Besides the WiFi and Bluetooth, the A716 will have a 400MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, and both SD and CompactFlash memory card slots. We're more excited about the A8100, though, which with its fold down keypad looks a bit like Sony Ericsson's new P900 smartphone. No word on when either of these might hit American shores. Read...

Asus V6800V Laptop 03/14/2005 06:02 PM

asus_v6800v.jpgAsus is showing off their latest laptop with the V6800V, which they claim is the world's thinnest and lightest 15-inch laptop. The V6800V stands at a pixie-like 0.9 inches thick and weighs just 4.4 pounds. Based on the Sonoma edition of the Intel Centrino chipset, the V6800V starts at 1.73 GHz with a 60GB hard drive. On the higher end, Asus offers 2 GHz and 100GB as well as the option for an 8-cell battery which they claim can hit eight hours, although I'm assuming that's time spent at the command prompt until I see otherwise. Available now in the UK for $2,300 (which includes VAT). No word on US availability or price, yet.

Carbon Fiber Asus V6V

Carbon Fiber Asus V6V 06/17/2005 06:11 PM

4121_large.jpgThere's a rule in the tech industry—making something out of carbon fiber makes it cooler. I don't care if it's a toilet plunger or a car hood, carbon fiber just sounds more interesting than "shiny plastic." Therefore, we aren't surprised to see that Asus is giving it a go in the carbon fiber notebook niche.

A few other folks have gone this route, but Asus seems to have hit a sweet spot. The V6V isn't too ostentatious. It's got a nice Pentium M-based chipset, and it's acceptably light—a 15" screen at 5.5 pounds—to warrant the carbon fiber.

Asus says Jake the PEG a feature, not a

Asus says Jake the PEG a feature, not a
cheat
08/05/2004 02:31 PM
Motherboard maker Asustek said that its PEG (PCI Express Graphics) link mode, competitor Gigabyte described as "a cheat" earlier this week, is really an outstanding feature that makes its competitors "marvel". Asus said PEG "is a unique feature that enables users to boost graphics card performance for superior video quality".

The P5AD2 Premium and P5GD2 Premium Asus mobos "received unparalleled testing reviews from world renowed IT media", said Asus. "Many competitors marveled at how the two new Asus motherboards achieved such excellent results," Asus continued in a press statement. "Marvelled" isn't exactly how Gigabyte put it. It claimed that PEG Link Mode "clandestinely overclocks the frequency of memory and core engines of ATI based PCI Express graphics".

Asus A730W Hits the Streets

Asus A730W Hits the Streets 12/22/2004 01:36 AM

asus_730w.jpg imageIt doesn't get much slower than this week (well, maybe next week), it seems, so forgive me if I'm posting news that PDA Buyer's Guide will be posting a review soon of the Asus A730W. On the upside, that means the Pocket PC handheld (an upgraded, Wi-Fied version of the A730) should be around for purchase, if you're in the market. And Asus is tossing in an extra battery and a USB Host cable with the VGA PDA, so it's a pretty decent deal at $570.
