International Phones Now at Stage 2: The
“Safety Device”
03/31/2005 08:57 AMThe ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason
for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by
Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of
its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell
phone purchase during 2004, and believe the results show that US
citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are
increasingly confident to travel internationally. [PRWEB Mar 31, 2005]

More Evidence That People Want Phones To
Communicate
More Evidence That People Want Phones To
Communicate
03/31/2005 07:20 AMI've been
ranting a
bit lately about how the mobile carriers have gotten completely
carried away with the idea that "content is king." They are
forgetting that mobile phones are
communications devices first.
Almost no one is buying a phone for broadcast style content first.
They buy it to communicate -- creating content for each other.
Broadcast style content is an additional "nice to have," but it
shouldn't be the focus, and the carriers shouldn't be
crippling
the communications functions just to support the less desirable
broadcast ones. Well, here's a bit more evidence to support that
viewpoint. Despite all the hype and talk about mobile content and
ringtones,
mess
aging still accounts for 85% of all youth mobile data revenue. In
other words, they're chatting with each other much, much more than
they're downloading the latest ringtone.
Mobile Phones Connecting More People
Mobile Phones Connecting More People
10/28/2003 11:08 PMMobiles Outnumber Fixed-line Phones
"In 2002, for the first time, the number of mobile phones worldwide
outnumbered fixed-line phones, according to the ITU....
In less developed countries in Asia and South America, where
fixed-line infrastructure is underdeveloped, mobile phones are the
most economic means of communication, and as a result there has been
massive mobile phone growth in these countries. This is likely to
continue for some time.
According to the ITU only 36.35% of the worlds population had
a phone in 2002, up from 28.74% in 2000. What is striking, however, is
that the adoption of mobile phones is having a major impact on the
total teledensity throughout the world. At the rate of mobile phone
growth worldwide, 50% of the world's population will have access to a
phone by 2005." [eMarketer]
So as mobile phone ownership (or access) increases, how will
libraries serve these patrons? What do remote library
services look like when viewed through a cell phone rather than a
desktop computer?

Kim Komando on Cell Phones
07/02/2004 01:22 AMKim Komando did a nice article on buying camera phones recently. She
discusses the importance of checking out the quality of the phone by
reading reviews and being selective when choosing a wireless carrier.
She then goes on to advise that you “try it before you buy
it”. Snap some photos to see how the images turn out. Her
message is clear as she explains that you need to know what to expect
from your carrier and what features you are wanting from your phone.

People Hate Others Using Mobile Phones,
But Happy They Can Do So Themselves
03/14/2005 05:27 PMThis probably isn't all that surprising, but a majority of people
surveyed complain that they're
annoyed by people who use mobile phones in
public places, but at the same time go on to talk about how
wonderful phones are for making it more convenient for
them to
communicate. It sounds like the typical study about drivers where the
vast majority think they're above average drivers. It seems like the
vast majority of mobile phone users think they are better than average
at keeping their public mobile phone conversations private. About 40%
of those surveyed think that there should be a law (which already does
exist in NYC, though, it's rarely, if ever, enforced) saying you can't
use a mobile phone in places like restaurants, museums or theaters.

Cell Phones Find Hotspots
09/17/2004 12:24 PMA new service in the UK lets Wi-Fi users find nearby hotspots with
their cell phones: By sending a text message to a certain mailbox,
users will receive a list of the nearest Wi-Fi hotspots. The service
offers up hotspots that are near the cell site that the user's phone
is communicating with. This is a fantastic offering for finding
hotspots in an area users may not be familiar with. There are plenty
of hotspot locators online, but they require users to investigate
hotspots in the area in advance. For all the procrastinators out there
or for folks who may find themselves unexpectedly in need of a
hotspot, the cell phone locator service is great. Now this company
just needs to start offering the service in the United States…...
