Trillian Vulnerability - Security Flaw
Found in Trillian IM

Trillian Vulnerability - Security Flaw
Found in Trillian IM
03/27/2005 05:55 AM
CNet news is reporting today that a potentially serious security flaw has been found in the Trillian instant messaging client.

Trillian is an instant messaging (IM) software which allows users to interact with people using many different IM services, such as AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger, using just one instant messaging client (Trillian) instead of having to run each instant messenger software for each service separately.

A large number of people use Trillian, and not surprisingly, as it has been estimated that at least 25% of home users instant message with people on at least two different IM networks at the same time.

The security hole discovered in Trillian will allow a malicious hacker to shut down programs running on the target machine, and even to take control of the entire computer.

Trillian’s CEO, Scott Werndorfer, played the flaw down as being “extremely low risk", stating that the hacker would need to create a fake instant messaging software, then send a message to the Trillian user, and then have the user accept the message. More at Source.

Switched to Trillian

Switched to Trillian 03/24/2005 04:04 PM

Yesterday, I had to add Yahoo IM client to communicate with team members of a project I've just joined.  With three IM clients running (MSN, AIM, and Yahoo), I had three contact lists and UIs to get confused with.  Yikes.  Then I remembered Trillian which supported all three IM protocols.  It took me about 5 minutes to replace the three IM clients with Trillian.  So far, I've had no problem at all and am happy with it.

Yahoo blocking Trillian again!

Yahoo blocking Trillian again! 06/24/2004 04:40 AM

I Love Trillian and I am not real Happy with Yahoo at this moment seems the idiots over their are blocking those of us using Trillian as our IM client. Who in their right mind wants 4-5 Instant Message clients sitting on their taskbar especially when the can run one program and have them all. It is a beautiful thing I don't get spam advertised and I used to be able to login to all 4 of my IM accounts.

The solution is simple tell all of those that I chat with on Yahoo to move to one of the remaining services that are not blocked. Yahoo just doesn't get it do they, no wonder they continue to loose the browser war and screw up every other half assed service they run. [ZDNet]

Yahoo Blocking Trillian Again -- This
Time They Say They're Serious

Yahoo Blocking Trillian Again -- This
Time They Say They're Serious
06/24/2004 01:49 AM
In the ongoing battle to keep their markets smaller, rather than as large as they can possibly be, the various instant messaging platforms still refuse to come up with a single standard to communicate across systems. Every time I complain about this issue, someone says "just use Trillian." That would be a great solution if the various IM providers didn't keep blocking Trillian. Yahoo has now announced that, not only are they now blocking Trillian, they're going to continuously change their protocol to keep blocking Trillian. Of course, it was just a few months ago that they claimed the exact same thing, and just like with Microsoft, Trillia n quickly patched through the block. However, the difference this time is that Yahoo is bringing up the dreaded "spam" excuse for why they're serious this time about the block. They claim they need to do so to keep out IM spammers, but it's also a convenient excuse to block out a third-party IM client on the misguided belief that a walled garden somehow helps them out, rather than taking away the network effects of an open, interoperable system.

Trillian Security Problem Surfaces

Trillian Security Problem Surfaces 03/28/2005 04:05 PM

Since I have instant messaging accounts with AOL, MSN, ICQ, and Yahoo, I found it much easier to use a single multi-client program for my instant messaging. For my PC I use Trillian. On my Macs I use Fire.  It didn’t take long for Trillian to become a victim of the dreaded PC buffer overflow which could allow hackers to control users PC’s.  According to beta news..

The vulnerability has existed within several of Trillian's plug-in components since version 2.0, but was mostly eliminated with the release of Trillian 3. However, Trillian 3.1 still contains two overflow bugs in the Yahoo Messenger component, LogicLibrary says. The problem can be used to shut down Trillian or lead to arbitrary code being executed on a vulnerable computer.  Cerulean Studios downplayed the significance of the flaw, saying the risk is extremely low for a real world attack. Nonetheless, the company plans to correct the buffer overflows in its next release of Trillian.

Security Flaw Uncovered in Trillian

Security Flaw Uncovered in Trillian 03/25/2005 03:48 PM
A potential security vulnerability has been discovered in Trillian, an alternative instant messaging client created by Cerulean Studios that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo IM networks. The flaw involves a buffer overflow that could be exploited to gain control of a Trillian user's PC.

Trillian 3 to Enter Beta Testing

Trillian 3 to Enter Beta Testing 08/16/2004 10:18 AM
Cerulean Studios is preparing a beta test for the next iteration of its multi-network instant messaging application, Trillian. Both Pro and Basic users may apply for the Trillian 3 early adopter program, and a public beta is likely to follow. "Once we are ready to send out a beta, chosen applicants will receive an e-mail from us," reads the beta notice. "We do not have a date or a deadline; the beta will be sent out as soon as it's done."
