Toshiba Corp. will begin mass-producing a 60GB, 1.8-inch hard-disk drive before the end of the year, it said Wednesday. Such drives are commonly used in digital music players and sub-notebook computers. The new drive offers a 50-percent improvement in storage space over Toshiba's current highest capacity 1.8-inch hard-disk drive yet manages this without being physically larger. The major factor that contributed to this increase was an advancement made in a thin-film technology used for both the head and platter, said Midori Suzuki, a spokeswoman for Toshiba in Tokyo.

indexipod_20040719a.jpg imageSo if you're a regular Gizmodo reader this isn't new news -- in fact, it's two months old -- but Toshiba is releasing a new 60GB version of the very same harddrive that is used inside the 20 and 40GB versions of the Apple iPod. And despite what Apple will try to tell you, they've already ordered a big mess of them; conveniently they are missing a top-end, $500 model fourth-generation iPod. It's not a question of if, it's a question of when.

Wrapped up in an attractive brushed aluminum chasis, the Mega Cache performs exactly as advertised, making it a viable alternative to most other small portable media, especially considering its small size (it's using a 1-inch drive). Soyo Group Inc. has taken the wraps off its latest portable hard drive, the Cigar HD20, a 1.8-inch hard drive with a USB 2.0 interface and 20GB of storage capacity. With its magnesium alloy casing, the US$199 Cigar HD20 is approximately the size of an iPod and weighs 2.8 ounces. The hard drive spins at 4200RPM and it draws power from a USB port. Soyo's Web page for the product lists the inclusion of compression/decompression software as well as e-mail sending and receiving capabilities and security features, but a company representative told MacCentral that none of those items currently ship with the drive, although they could be added at a later date. He was unsure if they will be compatible with Mac OS X. The Cigar HD20 comes with a USB 2.0 cable and a soft carrying case.

Available up to 37 inches wide, the panels all feature a resolution of 1366 x 768 and brightness of 500cd/m2 (we don't really know how bright that is, either). The "little time" feature provides for TiVo-like recording functionality, where you can pause/resume live TV with a single button push. As a side note, these units also feature an Ethernet jack and have full browser/e-mail functionality. There's even a USB port for your digital camera.

Word has it that Toshiba is planning on putting a TV tuner into one of their laptops, to which I can only really say: it's about time. It's always been painful to have this sharp, crystalline displays go to waste when it could, for a few dollars more in tuner chips, be working just fine as a TV. I know there are lots of ways you could add the functionality now, through either software or hardware solutions, but it just seems like such a no-brainer I'm surprised more companies aren't doing it.

I mean, it would be like Apple not putting high-quality line-in recording into the iPod, even though the hardware could support it. Oh wait...

Cometa and Toshiba: And Then There Was
One

Cometa and Toshiba: And Then There Was
One
04/20/2004 02:01 PM
With tiny scattered networks and the loss of McDonald's, Toshiba's SurfHere locations fold into Cometa Networks: As rumors surfaced a few weeks ago about a reduction in force at Toshiba's SurfHere division coupled with the inevitable reason--McDonald's had already informed them that Wayport would be their anointed partner--Toshiba is essentially exiting their poorly formulated and executed hotspot strategy. While Toshiba couldn't gain traction on its turnkey hotspot offering, Cometa gains the ability to include "some or all"--as the press release puts it--of SurfHere's hundreds of locations. Reading between the lines, they can cherry pick outlets that make sense to Cometa's mission. Cometa's current count of hotspots in their directory is about 100 excluding the McDonald's that will be taken over by Wayport. The Barnes & Noble deal, a year in the making, will eventually add 500 locations in the U.S. to Cometa's list. Toshiba is a massive computer manufacturer, however, and the press release pledges their involvement in promoting Cometa Networks' hotspots. A tricky affair, since Cometa has long said that they weren't branding their hotspots, but rather pushing through resale to brands like cell operators. Publicly held companies rarely like to admit defeat as it can open them up to shareholder lawsuits and stock drops. But the press release pushes a little too hard. "Having helped stimulate the emerging hotspot industry, we believe we can best continue with the strategic intent of the SurfHere Network through this alliance with Cometa Networks," says Chris Harrington, vice president, strategy and business development for Toshiba's American operations. Out of between 8,000 and 10,000 current U.S. hotspots a handful of locations scattered around the country were Toshiba locations. They had no major initiatives. They came late to the party. They secured no chains of stores or major venues. They had, let's be honest, an almost (but not quite) zero effect on the emerging hotspot industry except to show that at the end of the day you can fire hotspots out of a gun and hope they stick....

Toshiba is lining up the world's fasters memory chips. Testing has begun and they should be on sale in the second half the year, the company said. The 512MB XDR (extreme data rate) DRAM chips run at 4.8GHz - about 12 times faster than typical desktop PC memory.
Even better, Samsung and Elpida are on route to deliver the new chips in around the same time-frame—just in time for use in the Playstation 3, in fact. (Thanks, Luke!)
