08/05/2004 08:50 AM
U.S. computer giant Microsoft Corp Chairman Bill Gates has expressed interest in buying Japan's Nintendo Co, the German economic weekly Wirtschafts Woche reported in its electronic edition on Wednesday. Gates revealed his interest at a meeting of economic analysts in the United States. The magazine quoted Gates as saying he would immediately make an offer if Nintendo is ready to sell itself. If Hiroshi Yamauchi, the biggest shareholder of Nintendo and its adviser, calls, "he will be directly transferred to me," Gates said.

Microsoft to Buy Nintendo? 08/04/2004 03:27 PM
Speculation's running rampant (based on a rather random comment by CEO Bill Gates) that Microsoft is looking to buy Nintendo. But most gaming industry watchers seem to agree Nintendo's not shopping itself around. And if it were, it would prefer not to sell to Microsoft.

Why the push towards Xbox Next, console bundles, and Grand Theft Auto have one Nintendo manager steamed. Nintendo Europe managing director David Gosen has strongly criticised Microsoft for attempting to drive the industry to a hardware transition too early, and also attacked the games media for its focus on the next generation. Speaking at the ELSPA Games Summit in London, Gosen described the industry's current generational cycle as a "self-fulfilling prophecy," saying that the industry was stuck in a mindset where "five to six years is right, and come what may, we're going to stick to it."

08/05/2004 10:39 AM
A German financial magazine, WirtschaftsWoche, reported Wednesday that Bill Gates said he was interested in buying video game giant Nintendo. Many Web sites and several news services picked up the report, and Microsoft Corp.'s public relations team shifted swiftly into gear for damage control and denial. Its corporate statement was that Microsoft did not comment on "rumors or speculation." Beyond that, the Microsoft view was clearly that the reported comments were out of context. The remark attributed to Gates was made during an informal cocktail reception after Microsoft's yearly financial analysts' meeting recently at the company's Redmond headquarters.

All That Microsoft Buying Google Stuff

All That Microsoft Buying Google Stuff 10/31/2003 06:18 PM
Ah, there goes the press again. It was pretty common knowledge that Microsoft approached Google about the potential of a buyout much earlier this year, and Google said no thanks. However, now that a single reporter from the NY Times found out about it, the press is going nuts with Microsoft wants to buy Google stories. From everything that appears to be going on (and, clearly, I have no idea about the specifics of the discussions), Microsoft has been talking with Google about a whole variety of things for many many months. Every once in a while they bring up the possibility of an acquisition, and every time Google says no. It's all part of the expected dance. I would have been more surprised if the conversations hadn't happened than I am that they did.
