Content
DENVER, CO - June 4, 2004 - Today, NewsGator Technologies announced
that the recently launched NewsGator Media Edition is featured in
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004's "Online Spotlight," an online
guide created specifically for Media Center Edition PC customers that
offers a central location for them to find the latest third-party
services and software, such as music, movie trailers, news updates and
even Karaoke.
NewsGator provides a mechanism for Media Center PC users to easily
find NewsGator software and services online, without having to
separately download anything from the NewsGator web site. Both text
and multimedia content is supported, and information that has not
already been viewed on another device can be displayed by
synchronizing user subscriptions with NewsGator Online Services.
"We're excited to be included in Online Spotlight - this will
dramatically increase our visibility to the many thousands of Media
Center PC users," said Greg Reinacker, President & Founder of
NewsGator Technologies.
NewsGator Media Center Edition is included as part of NewsGator
Online Services. NewsGator Online Services includes three other
content reader editions, which allow users to read content they have
subscribed to from any web browser (with Web Edition), any email
client (with POP Edition), and from a mobile wireless device (with
Mobile Edition), which is a powerful feature for road warriors who use
mobile devices to access information while on the road. The service
also provides exclusive, subscriber-only content to its subscribers,
as well as the ability to search for content that matches a specific
keyword or URL, and return that content in a feed. NewsGator Online
Services pricing starts at $5.95/month per user.
"Media Center PCs allow consumers to have faster and more efficient
access to all of their favorite digital content when, where, and how
they want," said Brad Brooks, Director of Marketing at Microsoft Corp.
"With the NewsGator Media Center Edition, NewsGator Technologies is
delivering a complementary and innovative service that will let Media
Center Edition PC users easily access their customized choice of news
services."
More about NewsGator Media Center Edition
This is the latest step in the "any time, any place, any device"
strategy that distinguishes the NewsGator product line. NewsGator
Online Services allows users to read one set of content from any
device, without duplication. The combined power of NewsGator Media
Center Edition and Online Services offers customers a productive and
fun way to access their personalized subscriptions and information
from any device, whenever they need it.

Paul Thurrott has a review up of the Xbox Media
Center Extender kit—the package that lets you stream Media
Center recorded content to remote TVs via your Xbox—and it's
pretty much a must-read for anyone considering using the (fairly)
recently-released devices. While it has a lot to offer to Media Center
PC owners, a few glaring oversights, like a remote thats incompatible
with other Media Center devices (and vice-versa) and the decision by
Microsoft to force users to keep the software DVD in the Xbox at all
times instead of loading it onto the hard drive keep it from being a
clear winner. His short take is that it's good for those already
hitched to Microsoft's wagon, but it isn't going to win any new
fans.

Microsoft Announces Windows Media
Connect Technology, Enabling Seamless
Media Transfer Between Windows XP-Based
PCs and Consumer Electronics Devices
01/08/2004 07:36 PMToday at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES),
Microsoft Corp. announced Windows® Media Connect, technology designed
to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as
Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for
playing digital media files stored on personal computers over home
networks. A broad range of industry leaders have announced their
support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and
consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan
Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ
Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading
content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow
(formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect
for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a
new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media
Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by
networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary
devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.

expand PC-based home entertainment beyond gaming. Examples of the
former are two new Athlon-fueled machines that sit atop the power
section of our chart: Alienware's Aurora 64 FX-55 and ABS's Ultimate
M5-64. Both of these systems are visually appealing without shouting
"I'm just for games." Not only are they the two fastest systems on the
chart, but they also produced outstanding sound with their high-end
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 cards and their 5.1-channel Logitech
speakers (the X-530 and the Z-680, respectively).

I've not used HAI's home automation
products, so I can't vouch for eHomeUpgrade's claim they are "the
best," but if you've already invested in their products and a Windows
Media Center PC, you might be interested to know that HAI has
announced a new bit of plug-in software for Media Center 2005 that
will allow you to take control of your lighting, security,
temperature, and what not via the regular interface or MCE remote.
It's not free, though, which is sort of a bummer, especially since it
is clearly something that is only useful for HAI users, and no price
has yet been announced.

Who Needs A DVD When You Have A
Microsoft Media Center?
07/14/2004 05:22 AMWell, I'm sure some folks will make a bigger deal out of this than
necessary, but Bill Gates is now claiming that
the DVD has no
future. He believes in 10 years it will be completely obsolete.
As he says, it makes no sense for people to be carrying around
portable media that can get scratched, lost or broken. While the
Inquirer then knocks Gates by pointing out he once predicted the
internet had no future either, this prediction really isn't that
ridiculous. As overall storage and broadband connections grow, it may
become pointless to ever carry around a DVD. Some might say the
process has already started (though, with questionable legality in
some circles). Of course, what isn't mentioned is that Gates hopes
that what used to be your DVD collection will, instead, reside on a
Microsoft powered "Media Center" that you can access from anywhere.

Linksys Offers Range Extender with
Limits
06/16/2004 09:54 AMLinksys's WRE54G is a logical repeater, listening to network traffic
and rebroadcasting it; but security options are lacking, advice is
odd: The description of this device contains slim information. As far
as I can tell, it's a Wi-Fi only logical repeater, meaning that it's
using networking magic to relay data. It can't be using Wireless
Distribution System (WDS) because Linksys notes it works with any
802.11b or g network. It must attach as a client to an existing
network and redistribute access as an access point itself. This
function is similar to Linksys's WET11 and WET54G, which bridge
Ethernet networks to any access point by simulating a client and
masquerading MAC addresses. The manual for this range extender
mentions multiple times in the first few pages of configuration advice
that the range extender is easier to use if you turn off WEP
encryption--which is extremely odd advice coming from a Wi-Fi
equipment maker at this point in time. The unit only supports WEP as
an encryption option, meaning that more secured networks that use WPA
can't take advantage of range extension. The unit will cost $99, but
I'm not sure it's necessary except for legacy home networks. For about
$80 you can purchase a WRT54G, but Linksys has only enabled wireless
bridging as a fixed mode: that is, a WRT54G can't bridge and be an
access point at the same time. A similar unit from Buffalo, the
WLA2-54G, costs about $100 and like Apple's AirPort Extreme and
AirPort Express Base Stations, can serve clients while bridging to
other gateways. If were building a network from scratch that required
bridging and I wanted WPA security now, I'd choose Buffalo's gateway
as the fundamental element....
