04/27/2004 12:31 AMI am most pleased to announce that Michael Stephens and Bob
Lewandowski from the St.
Joseph County Public Library will be presenting at the next SLS
Tech Summit! Come see their infamous SJCPL
Staff Day 2003 video if nothing else, but I guarantee you'll
come away with a lot more. Oh, and we'll be taking them out for dinner
afterwards if you'd like to join us.
Staff and
User Technology Training
"Two technology trainers from the St. Joseph County Public Library
in South Bend, IN, will discuss how they motivate staff and library
users for technology training, including Internet basics, Web
searching and applications. How do we engage our learners? How do we
design training that carries with them back to their desks or homes
and translates to useful skills. Session will include examples and a
sample training module."

Women Into Tech, But Not Into Tech
Jargon
09/07/2004 05:03 AM
While there have been some stories in the past suggesting that women
are
just
as into gadgets as men, a new study in the UK suggests that even
if that's true,
they're not as on top of the gadget jargon as
guys. Nearly all women in the study (96%) said they "lacked
confidence" when a discussion turned technical, and most claimied they
had no clue what words like kbps, ISP and googling meant. Only half
of the women surveyed knew that 512kbps was approximately 10 times
faster than dialup, while nearly 80% of the guys did. Of course, it
wasn't so much lack of knowledge, but lack of concern. When asked
about their broadband connection, women generally said: "It works,
it's fast - that's all I need to know."

That Other Big Tech IPO
05/10/2004 04:31 AMThe massive rush of news surrounding Google's pending IPO must be
painful for Marc Benioff at Salesforce.com - which represents the
"other" big dot com IPO of the year. Benioff can't talk about the IPO
because they're in their "quiet period", but if you've seen some of
the
publici
ty stunts he's pulled off, you know that he can't stand being out
of the spotlight. So, he let a reporter
follow him around for a day and
just tried to avoid talking about IPO related stuff. It's an
interesting read, and talks about the success of Salesforce.com so
far, while still being skeptical about its overall chances.

sorta kinda part of the O'Reilly Emerging Technology conference, which
was a must-attend event last year and promises to be as good this
year. The Teach-In — bring a flower and anything written by
Howard Zinn — looks like it'll be a great day with some fabulous
folks who are actually making a difference. (Disclosure: I'm on the
conference committee, but that doesn't mean I'd lie to you about being
excited about the event.)...

What Can The US Do To Keep Its Tech
Edge?
What Can The US Do To Keep Its Tech
Edge?
04/19/2005 11:07 AMThere have been a few interesting discussions lately about the US's
place in the technology world. With our supposed
fall
in the broadband rankings combined with US university's recent
poor showing in the ACM's programming contest, a
number of folks are worried that the US is losing its technology edge.
There is the argument that things aren't as bad as they might appear
-- and it's tough to determine the state of the entire industry on
these two, somewhat random, datapoints. However, there's no reason
people shouldn't at least be
thinking about ways to improve US
competence in the technology field. The head of the ACM suggests that
a few simple changes could make a huge difference, just by
showing young people that the country cares about technology. For
example, he notes that schools in other countries base some of their
funding wins on how well they do in the ACM contest, and the Russian
winners a few years ago got to meet with President Putin -- while
President Bush seems to focus on congratulating sports winners. While
having the President say hi to some CS students is a nice idea, it's
hardly a real plan to push tech education forward. Last year,
remember all those claims from both Presidential candidates about
univer
sal broadband? It didn't actually do very much to stimulate
broadband at all. So, politicians saying things isn't quite the same
as doing things. Meanwhile, some are noticing that the real broadband
competition
appears to be happening in Europe, where there isn't
duopoly control over access -- though, it's also not clear that many
of those companies competing will be able to survive for very long.
The real trick is (a) understanding how important technology is, and
what it's real impact is and (b) making sure nothing is impeding
competition. Right now it's not clear that the US is doing the
greatest job on both of those points -- but that doesn't mean we
should rush into making big changes that will cause even more trouble
either.

11/05/2003 10:59 AMIt seems that the rest of the technology world is finally realizing
what Apple has known all along, that design is important. This
TechNewsWorld article explores the computer industry's sudden interest
in industrial design. Though the industry as a whole is recognizing
the need for excellent industrial design, it is also showing that it
doesn't really understand why it is important to create products that
people want to use. Unlike Apple, which has always considered product

The Tech of Cirque - Ka
The Tech of Cirque - Ka
12/24/2004 12:57 PMMy wife and I recently returned from a trip to Vegas where we took
in the latest Cirque du Soleil show, Ka. If you
have ever experienced a Cirque show you know what I'm talking about
when I say that there is nothing like it. Ka, however represents a
change in direction for the 20 year old circus troop from Montreal. Ka
leaves behind many of the acrobatic and gymnastic routines and instead
focuses on a story while including martial arts and some gymnastics.
(Review)
The star of the show is the technology created to stage the show.
The theater itself cost an estimated $100 million to build. Every one
of the 1,900 seats have speakers built into them so the sound
completely surrounds you during the show. The stage consists of two
pieces that move independently of each other. One piece is about 30'
by 30' and slides forward and back. The other one is 21' by 48' and it
lifts, tilts and rotates depending upon the scene. It is operated by a
$10 million dollar gantry crane.
The development of which delayed the opening of the show for nearly
five months. To see it in action is quite impressive. The highlight of
the show was the final battle scene in which the stage is tilted
completely vertical giving the audience a sky view of the battlefield
as actors fight while dangling on wires. It's obvious the pride they
take in the stage itself. During the curtain call it is hoisted up and
lit so the audience can see just how massive it truly is.
If you're headed to Vegas go see this show. It ain't cheap, but
I've never left a Cirque show thinking it wasn't worth the ticket
price. Besides it's the same as a ticket to see Celine. C'mon, that's
an easy decision.
