Tiger
04/01/2005 05:15 PMBare Bones Software today announced the forthcoming release of
PunchOut, a new integrated backup system which safely records critical
user data onto a durable backup medium.
Available only for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, PunchOut employs a combination
of Tiger-only technologies and a new data engine created by Bare Bones
Software. Once installed on a customer's system, PunchOut employs the
new "Spotlight" data engine in Mac OS X 10.4 to analyze stored data
for backup. The new Advanced Prioritized Retrieval Integration Layer
engine uses Spotlight in conjunction with a naive Bayesian reverse
classifier to analyze stored data in real time.
After analysis, data to be backed up is then submitted to the
Functional Output Optimization Logic subsystem, which employs a
user-configurable Automator workflow for submitting stored data to an
IBM model 129 Card Data Recorder (included with purchase of the
PunchOut software). The use of Automator grants additional flexibility
and redundancy: if desired, the customer can configure up to eight
card-punch machines to operate in parallel, which allows the use of
PunchOut as a centralized backup server for enterprise workgroups.
Completing the class-leading support of Tiger technologies, PunchOut
includes a Dashboard widget that allows customers to observe the
current status of their punch job.
PunchOut will be available immediately as soon as Mac OS X 10.4 is
publicly released, announced by Apple to be sometime in the first half
of 2005. PunchOut will be suggested retail priced at US$149 with a
discounted cross-upgrade price of US$114 available to registered
owners of BBEdit, TextWrangler, Mailsmith and Salling Clicker.
Educational discounts and site license pricing are also available.

Macworld review: Mailsmith 2.0
11/05/2003 06:03 PMContrary to what the folks cavorting in cargo-pants commercials might
say, no single style is going to appeal to everyone. The fact that
there are so many e-mail clients competing with Apple's free Mail app
doesn't necessarily mean that Mail has limitations. No, that fact is
evidence of a universal truth: All e-mail users are looking for the
one shining feature that grabs their attention and sets their favorite
e-mail application apart from the rest. The bling-bling of Bare Bones
Software's e-mail program, Mailsmith, has always been the ability to
automate all the drudgy, soul-sucking aspects of having a high-volume
e-mail address. This legacy continues with the Mac OS X–only
Mailsmith 2.0.

Mailsmith Happy
Mailsmith Happy
02/10/2004 02:45 AM
I finally
did it. I broke down and bought Mailsmith.
I used Mailsmith 1.0 and 1.5 when OS X was first released, because
Apple's Mail.app was utterly horrible, and I received a free NFR copy
because I was working for a small Macintosh news site at the time...
and Bare Bones saw fit to give us a copy for review... so I reviewed
it and fell in love (the review was never published).
But then, Apple's Mail got better with Jaguar, and even better with
Panther, but this past week something in Mail broke. I don't know why
or what and can't really explain the problems I'm having with Mail
other than to say that after reading and deleting 4-5 emails, Mail.app
crashes for no apparent reason. Happens every time I fire it up. And
the Junk-mail filters just quit working, so now, I'm getting 100+ junk
mails in my in-box... perhaps MyDoom is to blame for Mail.app crapping
out on me...
So, I figured I'd switch back over to Mailsmith until I could
figure out the problem with Mail.app. Within 5 minutes of using
Mailsmith 1.5, I was in love again (and yes, I love BBEdit, and I
think that's what drives my fascination with Mailsmith). So, I zipped
over to Bare Bones.com to buy the latest version of Mailsmith, and
guess what? It comes free with SpamSieve from Michael
Tsai, too. Woohoo!
And now, I'm Mailsmith happy again, and not getting any more spam,
and loving it. I guess the coolest part is that Mailsmith 2.x picked
up all of my old 1.5 settings and preferences, and imported all of my
email from Mail.app with no problems... And now I don't have to read
HTML email anymore either. What a bonus.
Thanks Bare Bones.
And no, folks, I don't think $99 is too much to pay for a mail
client, espectially when you work 'in your email client' as much as I
do.

02/10/2004 02:43 AMWhy I’m switching to Mailsmith and
SpamSieve
Why I’m switching to Mailsmith and
SpamSieve
01/07/2004 03:09 PMI’m switching from Apple Mail to
Mailsmi
th and
SpamSieve.
I had grown increasingly unhappy with Mail back in the Jaguar days.
Performance was a big issue, but there were also user interface
issues—the big one being that I couldn’t navigate the
mailbox list via the keyboard.
Another issue was that the spam filter was getting less and less
effective and I was dealing with spam by creating filters again.
There’s no way I want to go back to that world. (I spent five
years in Eudora creating spam filters by hand.)
But I decided to stick with Mail for a while, since Mail would be
updated in Panther. And when Panther shipped, there were some nice
improvements in the new version of Mail, but it didn’t
specifically address my problems.
And then performance got worse. Even just checking mail became this
long process. At first I thought it had to be the server. But then I
downloaded the Mailsmith demo—and checking email was quick.
I also downloaded Eudora and gave it a shot. I had used Eudora for
many years in the classic Mac OS. But I didn’t really like it in
OS X: something about the look of it these days just rubbed me the
wrong way. Just a personal taste thing, I’m sure.
So I used Mailsmith some more—and I found I liked it. It was
faster than Mail. It’s very scriptable and
customizable—for instance, I wanted to give some of the menu
commands the same keystrokes that I was used to in Mail, and I could.
Mark as Spam is now shift-cmd-J in my copy of Mailsmith.
Two other wonderful features of Mailsmith: it does not display HTML
email and the text editing engine comes from BBEdit. But the very
coolest feature may be SpamSieve.
Simply put: it catches my spam far more accurately than Mail ever did.
Mail never came close. That’s the main thing SpamSieve has to do
it, and it does it.
But it goes beyond that—you can see statistics on how well
it’s doing. You can look at and edit the blocklist and
whitelist. (Not something I’ve had to do, though.) My favorite
of these extra features is the Show Corpus command. It shows you the
words SpamSieve has seen, how often they’ve been in spam vs.
good messages, and what the spam probability is. This fascinates
me.
For instance, the word “terminate” has appeared 13 times
since I started using Mailsmith. It has appeared in spam 12 of those
times. Another for instance: any email sent to webmaster@ranchero.com
has an 89% probability of being spam.
SpamSieve is a generous piece of software, in that it does its job
very well but then gives you the extras that make it fun. And
it’s written by Michael Tsai, another small, independent
developer with a
weblog.
