Free software Java platforms

Free software Java platforms 01/14/2003 02:28 PM

Richard Stallman is interested whether XSLT-process, my XSLT processor and debugger Emacs interface for the Saxon and Xalan XSLT processors runs on top of a free software JDK.

As far as I know Kaffe is one such free-software implementation of a Java virtual machine. There are many other implementations listed at Kaffe's Web site.

Does anybody have any experience with any of these in a real project? How much of the JVM functionality and the associated class libraries in JDK 1.3 are implemented? Can one run an XML parser and an XSLT processor like Saxon or Xalan on top of them?

Platforms

Friendster goes PHP: This is good news. I hate to dis Java, but, well, I hate it. Always have.

...on Friday we launched a platform rearchitecture based on loose-coupling, web standards, and a move from JSP (via Tomcat) to PHP. The website doesn't look much different, but hopefully we can now stop being a byword for unacceptably poky site performance.

Related to this, here's something that just threw me for a loop the other day —

A long time ago, I developed an open source app for churches. The app is very simple to set up and get running. I wrote it back when I didn't know the first thing about object-oriented programming, and the code certainly won't win any awards, but it did a job and did it very well. A lot of churches got it up and running and benefitted from it.

I gave up the project to someone else two years ago, and the guy who owns it now is doing great things with it. However, he just anounced that the app is being re-written in J2EE. Here's what he said:

As for J2EE, there is plenty reason why this needs to be the direction for future development of [App Name] and, in fact, all other Open Source enterprise software. PHP simply does not scale and does not offer the richness of development tools that J2EE does through the many open source projects implementing and surrounding it. There are a lot of misconceptions about J2EE that abound because many people/companies misuse/misunderstand it. It is not difficult/expensive to set up, it is not harder to develop for (past the learning curve), and it is certainly not slow (in fact, performance is one reason we are moving away from PHP's limiting CGI-like architecture).

PHP is only good for simple, lightweight web apps. J2EE is good for professional enterprise-class applications, which is what [App Name] is going to become. In the end, [App Name] development is going to become faster and far more professional and the software itself is going to become far more reliable, extensible and sophisticated.

I am wickedly biting my tonque over this, but, I tell you, I could not disagree more completely with everything this guy has written. BUT — it's not my project anymore, and this guy has really done good things with it in terms of developing a community and adding functionality. Perhaps the benefits he brought there will offset this error.

(I'm not going to mention the name of the project, because I don't want to start a war of words or anything. If you know the name of the project, please keep it to yourself. I hate to censor anything, but I'll get rid of any comments that identify the app or the developer. Thanks.)

After that little rant, it may seem strange for me to say that I'm trying not to get hung up on platforms lately. My buddy Matt has been pelting my with .Net propaganda, and Joe told me that it's fantastic as well ("I tried really hard to hate it..."). This being the case, I'm trying to stay platform neutral these days and concentrate on app design and usability, without regard for what platform the app is written in.

I've recently use PHP to write perhaps the best app I've ever designed, but I'm trying not to identify it with PHP so much. I'm trying to think that the value of the app is in the design, the flow, and the usability, and that we could re-write it in any platform that makes sense. (See this post for much more on this note.)

So why am I so hot about the aofrementioned Java re-write? Because that app is designed for organizations with very, very limited computer budgets and resources. For them to set-up a PHP-capable Web server is probably asking too much, but it was the lowest barrier to entry I could find. Above, I said "re-write it in any platform that makes sense" — I don't see that Java makes any sense here.

Okay, rant over. I've probably said too much already. I know this post will offend someone, and I apologize in advance while bracing for the deluge.

Mobilization of Software Developers: The Free Software Movement by Margret S. Elliott and Walter Scacchi
http://ope nsource.mit.edu/papers/elliottscacchi2.pdf

Abstract by Author:
Free/open source software (F/OSS) development projects are growing at a rapid rate. Globally dispersed virtual communities with large groups of software developers contribute time and effort often without pay. One force behind this phenomenon is the Free Software Movement (FSM), a 20 year-old social movement whose purpose is to promote the use of free software instead of proprietary software. We show how the ideology of the FSM influences software development work practices in F/OSS communities and how an occupational community of F/OSS developers has emerged from this movement. We present results from an empirical study of a F/OSS development community, GNUenterprise (GNUe) whose purpose is to build an Enterprise Resource Planning system. We show how the beliefs in freedom and freedom of choice, and the values of cooperative work and community building are manifested in the GNUe norms of informal self-management, immediate acceptance of fellow contributors, and open disclosure.

Editor's note: Stallman's timing with this piece is impeccable, and it dovetails nicely with the questions raised by Javalobby's Rick Ross in this article. If your program is free software, it is basically ethical--but there is a trap you must be on guard for. Your program, though in itself free, may be restricted by non-free software that it depends on. Since the problem is most prominent today for Java programs, we call it the Java Trap.

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools 05/17/2004 10:25 AM

Open Source: Open Source Scripting Made Easy: This is an article about PHP scripting tools that makes an important point:

Commercial scripting languages have drawn success from powerful and widely used development tools: ASP has Visual Studio, ColdFusion has Macromedia's Dreamweaver, and JSP has a variety of tools from commercial sources such as Borland and open source projects such as Eclipse and NetBeans. PHP's enormous success, however, is not tied to specific tools.

Some friends of mine have been working with Microsoft's .Net platform. They tell me it's amazing ("fan-friggin'-tastic," one of them called it). This is great, but I guess I don't like anything where the barrier to entry is so high — first you have to have a Windows server, then you have to have the Windows dev environment.

I code PHP in EditPlus, which cost me all of $30, and that was an optional purchase because there are so many other free alternatives. Maybe I'm just a snob. Via PHP|Architect.

Users of Microsoft Corp.'s Java Virtual Machine (JVM) have an extra three years to drop the software and migrate to Microsoft's .Net or a competing Java product following the company's broad deal with Sun Microsystems Inc. early this month. Microsoft was set to end support for its JVM on Sept. 30, much to the dismay of developers who built applications to work with the software. Now Microsoft has extended security patch support for its JVM until Dec. 31, 2007, Brian Keller, a Microsoft product manager, said Tuesday. Security patches are the only support Microsoft currently provides for the JVM. "This is certainly very good for many of our customers. It means they have over three additional years to migrate their applications. In some cases those applications were already set to retire before 2007," Keller said. The extension was agreed on in the settlement and collaboration pact Microsoft struck with Sun Microsystems Inc. early this month.

A few of us InfoWorlders spoke yesterday with one of Microsoft's Indigo architects, John Shewchuk. In the course of our conversation, Shewchuk mentioned the recent WinHEC announcement about device support for Web services protocols, reported in InfoWorld on May 5:
Microsoft Corp., Intel Corp., Lexmark International Inc. and Ricoh Co. Ltd. on Tuesday detailed new Web services technology designed to make it easier for users to connect devices such as printers, digital cameras and digital music players over a network. The companies at Microsoft's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) officially announced a Devices Profile for Web services, which describes how devices should use Web services protocols. The announcement builds on WS-Discovery, a Web services specification that Microsoft, Intel, Canon Inc. and BEA Systems Inc. introduced in February. WS-Discovery describes a way for devices to find and connect to Web services. [ InfoWorld.com: Web services find way to devices]

java.util.concurrent for Java 1.4

java.util.concurrent for Java 1.4 12/19/2004 03:06 PM

One of the shiniest new feature of Java 5.0 (aka Java 1.5) is a rich set of concurrent programming classes in java.util.concurrent (aka JSR 166), much of which is a direct port of Doug Lea's Concurrent Programming in Java library.  Since I don't have the luxury of using Java 5.0 yet, I've resorted to using Doug's original library which is, for the most part, functionally equivalent to java.util.concurrent but not close enough for comfort, particularly since concurrency code tend to be very sensitive to minor changes.

The good news is that Dawid Kurzyniec backported java.util.concurrent package to run under Java 1.4 and made it available as open source.  Apparently Sun is letting this happen because it's own code is based on Doug's open source library.

There are some shortcomings but nothing much to cry over.  My only complaint is that it doesn't use the java.util.concurrent package name which means I'll have to update the package names later (simple but still change nonetheless).  But that I can see the technical and legal issues preventing that from happening.  I am just glad someone did this.
