12/05/2003 11:20 AMLast night, a BBC broadcast declared Bill Gates the "most powerful
computer mogul," but a poll on the BBC website clearly shows the UK
viewers believe Steve Jobs is more powerful. Of the nearly 5,000 votes
cast, 78 percent support Jobs. While the broadcast stated that "Steve
Jobs and Apple create products that are beautiful and elegant to use,"
a BBC journalist rebutted that "Bill Gates' software is everywhere.

Gates: Convergence is for real
01/08/2004 07:30 PMFolks have been talking about the coming convergence between PCs and
consumer electronics for years. But that was the easy part.
The hard call was to figure out exactly how the pieces would fall into
place. Although the debate goes on, one person who thinks that the
technology industry is on the cusp of realizing one of its
longest-sought grails is Bill Gates.
Gates, who took the stage Wednesday night to deliver the opening key
note at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is convinced that
recent technology advances have paved the way toward real convergence.
CNET News.com caught up with Microsoft's co-founder and chairman to
find out what's behind his optimism.

Bill Gates Claims Open Source Kills Jobs
Bill Gates Claims Open Source Kills Jobs
07/12/2004 07:35 PMIn another futile attempt to sway companies away from Open Source
software, Gates proclaims that Open Source software costs jobs.
Understand that this is a random statement with no facts or figures to
back up his claim, Mr. Gates apparently figures that we will simply
take his word for it.
Well let’s also consider this, Mr. Gates. There are a number of
companies that are not only growing, but also turning a profit
utilizing their own branded version of Open Source software. Open does
not mean free, it means it is open to be reviewed, revised, and then
redistributed as the developer see fit within the constraints of the
GPL. Competition is a scary thing, huh, Bill? ;o)

02/13/2004 03:55 PMI was in the middle of a very strange dream, when Anne woke me up this
morning. I was at the Concert for the Masses, but the Rose Bowl looked
just like the Hollywood Bowl, and the backstage area was like Cal
State LA. I was being chased by some guy who was a cross between Henry
Rollins, Juggernaut, and The Thing.
Needless to say, even though today was a sleep in day for me, I was
happy to be pulled away from
that little bit of subconscious
weirdness!
It was about 6.15 when she shook me awake.

I Feel So Used
I Feel So Used
08/16/2004 12:08 PMWhen Search Engines
Become Answer Engines: This is depressing, but no-doubt true.
A major change over the years has been a declining
emphasis on using search to identify good sites as such. Rather than
hunt for sites to explore and use in depth, users now hunt for
specific answers. The Web as a whole has thus become one agglomerated
resource for people who use search engines to dredge up specific pages
related to specific needs, without caring which sites supply the
pages.
I hit and run — I look for answer in Google, visit the page
to get the answer, and never even take stock of where I am in the Web.
I think Nielsen has good advice for converting users:
Embellish the answer with rich "see also" links to related
content and services. Global navigation won't do the trick;
answer-seekers will ignore it. Remember, they are not interested in
your site. But contextual links will make the most eager users dig
deeper -- and the eager ones are the people you'll want to keep as
prospects for your for-pay services. See-also links can be embedded
(as I've done here) or you can place them at the end of the article,
where they serve as a follow-up call to action. The latter gives you
the opportunity to let people know that you're actually selling
something, and not just handing out free
information.

Hogzilla is real. And now, he's real

03/22/2005 05:00 PMXeni Jardin:
A team of National Geographic experts with nothing better to do
confirmed the existence of Georgia's monster hog, "Hogzilla."
They also noted the super swine didn't quite live up to the
1,000-pound, 12-foot hype generated when Hogzilla was caught on a farm
last summer and photographed hanging from a backhoe. Donning biohazard
suits to exhume the behemoth's smelly remains, the experts estimated
Hogzilla was probably only 7 1/2 to 8 feet long, and weighed about 800
pounds. The confirmation came in a documentary aired Sunday night on
the National Geographic Channel; it will be rebroadcast Wednesday and
Saturday.
