Top Tip: How do I install "America's
Army" in Linux?
01/08/2004 07:15 PM

After reading about how awesome "America's Army" is on a linux system (I have RedHat 9), I decided to download all 670 MB of it. MY QUESTION IS THIS: the file is a .RUN file, so how do I install it? Do I just double-click it or what? I never came across a .RUN file before.

This is a GrokNews Entry: (what is grok?)

America's Army: Special Forces is a free team-based tactical first person shooter published by the US Army and distributed for free over the Internet. The game is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. The new 2.1 version, codenamed "Downrange," is available for download. It incorporates many new features, including a new "Karma Physics Engine" that provides more realistic physics and character animations. Also added in this release is the M136 AT4 anti-tank weapon, a new armored vehicle called the Stryker, a new "Tournament Mode," a new "Demo/Kiosk Mode," two new maps, and many other changes. The full version measures 743MB, but if you have the 2.0a version, a 109MB update patch is available for download instead -- a list of download mirrors is available from the America's Army Web site. System requirements call for a G4/700MHz or faster, 256MB RAM, 1GB of hard drive space, and an ATI Radeon 7500 or Nvidia GeForce2 MX or better graphics system.

Most Linux distros provide a wide variety of server applications, and many network-aware apps are enabled by default when you install the operating system. Before you put your new Linux machine online, there are a number of steps you should take to make your network secure. Use these tips every time you perform a fresh install; none of these steps will help to secure a machine that has already been compromised.

You can get an idea of their suffering from the news stories I've linked, or read a more detailed account written in the 1860s from Henry R. Stiles's A History of the City of Brooklyn (scroll down a bit and keep hitting Next). No aid for America's bad image

No aid for America's bad image 12/30/2004 04:51 PM
By lying low in the wake of the Asian tsunami, and then surfacing to pledge the relatively small amount of $35 million in relief aid, has President Bush squandered an opportunity to mend America's image abroad? It's a provocative question posed by David Sanger in the New York Times Thursday, in which he quotes Morton Abramowitz, who served as American ambassador to Thailand a quarter century ago and went on to become one of the founders of the International Crisis Group, which helps prepare governments to respond to unexpected shocks. "It's a tragedy but it is also an opportunity to demonstrate that terrorism doesn't drive out everything else," Abramowitz said. "It's a chance for him to show what kind of country we are."

Diminishing America's Meaning

Diminishing America's Meaning 06/10/2004 11:35 AM

  • Richard Cohen (Washington Post): A Plunge from the Moral Heights. The Bush administration constantly reminds us that there's a war on. That's wrong. There are two. One is being fought by soldiers in combat, and the other is being fought for the hearts and minds of people who are not yet our enemies. However badly the administration has botched the first war -- where, oh where, is Osama bin Laden? -- it has done even worse with the second. It has jutted its chin to the world, appeared pugnacious and unilateralist, permitted the abuse of POWs and others at Abu Ghraib, and now toyed in some fashion with torture. The Bush administration has shamed us all, reducing us to the level of those governments that also have wonderful laws forbidding torture, but condone it anyway.
  • Even if there wasn't a moral issue, you'd imagine that even this crowd would grasp the practical necessity of treating prisoners with decency. If we declare license to do this to other nations' combatants, other nations will do it to ours. But the issue is deeper. As Michael Froomkin, professor of law at the University of Miami, notes on his blog, the adminstration's rationale is truly frightening. Of a redacted copy of the Justice Department memo Ashcroft won't give Congress but which has been leaked widely to the media, Froomkin writes:
(It) sets out a view of an unlimited Presidential power to do anything he wants with “enemy combatants”. The bill of rights is nowhere mentioned. There is no principle suggested which limits this purported authority to non-citizens, or to the battlefield. Under this reasoning, it would be perfectly proper to grab any one of us and torture us if the President determined that the war effort required it. I cannot exaggerate how pernicious this argument is, and how incompatible it is with a free society. The Constitution does not make the President a King. This memo does.
Will this be the catalyst that helps Congress find its spine?

America's Problem - How Torture Came
    Down From The Top
    08/27/2004 01:51 PM
How Torture Came Down From the Top  The latest official reports on the prisoner abuse scandal contain a classic Washington contradiction. Their headlines proclaim that no official policy mandated or allowed the torture of detainees in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that no officials above the rank of colonel deserve prosecution or formal punishment. But buried in their hundreds of pages of detail, for anyone who cares to read them, is a clear and meticulous account of how decisions made by President Bush, his top political aides and senior military commanders led directly to those searing images of naked prisoners being menaced with guard dogs.  (More Inside)

The Global File System (GFS) is a 64-bit shared disk cluster file system for Linux. GFS cluster nodes physically share the same storage by means of Fibre Channel or shared SCSI devices. The file system appears to be local on each node and GFS synchronizes file access across the cluster. GFS is fully symmetric, meaning that all nodes are equal and there is no server which may be a bottleneck or single point of failure. GFS uses read and write caching while maintaining full UNIX file system semantics. GFS supports journaling, recovery from client failures, and many other features.
