Email: to sign or not to sign?

Email: to sign or not to sign? 01/22/2004 02:10 AM
If you participate in non-techno-geek mailing lists, and you also make a habit of "signing" your mail in compliance with the open standards articulated by RFC2015/3156, you've undoubtedly run into questions about what you're doing and possibly even criticism for doing it. At least that's been my experience over the past couple of years on mailing lists as low-tech as one dedicated to raising donkeys and mules and as high-tech as tech journalism. Well, on second thought, maybe those are both low-tech. But in any case, I've been asked to stop signing messages on both lists. The question is what to do: continue swimming upstream or give in and go with the flow?

Security is everybody's business. Even yours, you lackadaisical, GUI-dependent, louts! So read carefully and learn how you can improve your data security at the command line. In a previous column, we learned how to create the keys for GnuPG, the free software version of Phil Zimmerman's Pretty Good Privacy. This week we'll learn how to use those GnuPG keys to create and verify cryptographic signatures. So grab your Secret Decoder rings and hold on tight, Crypto Kiddies: here we go back to the land of personal cryptography!

PHP 5: A Sign that PHP Could Soon be
Owned by Sun

PHP 5: A Sign that PHP Could Soon be
Owned by Sun
08/06/2004 07:56 AM
Thanks to fellow Neowinian Krome for bringing this to our attention via BPN.

PHP 5’s official release occurred on July 13th with a complete re-haul of object-oriented programming features and improved MySQL functions. These are sure to be great additions to the package for PHP developers. However, many of the changes to PHP are hinting to something that may not necessarily be something PHP developers will like down the road.

At first glance, the obvious changes to PHP are a result of the success of the Java platform and the weaknesses of PHP revealed when making a comparison. With the release of PHP 5, it's apparent that the developers of PHP and the Zend Engine (which are essentially one and the same) felt compelled to make PHP much more like Java with respect to object-oriented programming. With its new interoperability with Java, as it states on Zend’s web site, “full integration with Java will be closer than ever before.” Hmmm, full integration with Java, huh?

On November 4th, 2003, Zend, the Israeli company backing the development of PHP announced a strategic partnership with Sun. This deal also included advisors from Borland, Macromedia, MySQL and others. The purported purpose of this deal was to make PHP part of Sun’s web server and bring it to the corporate world of development that previously had been dominated by ASP and ColdFusion. Now with the release of PHP 5, it’s far more apparent which path PHP is taking.

It's the first sign of the apocalypse - Google is throwing up errors all over the shop. I've checked with a few other people to see if it's happening with them too. My favourite response was from Matt Haughey who essentially said that he couldn't really chat at the moment since he was currently onstage at SXSW doing a panel on online journalism with JD Lasica, Dan Gillmor and the guy from crabwalk.com. But yes, he'd just noticed it too...

Computer skills are becoming more of a requirement for anyone to get a job, but if you're deaf, you first have to overcome the problem of communicating complex computer jargon. So the Royal National Institute for the Deaf is trans lating the latest IT jargon into sign language. Apparently, the old sign for mouse was the same as the animal -- which led to some confusion -- so the new sign is a gesture that mimics how a mouse is used.
