Big oops, actually. Ziv Caspi informed me that my page linked to the wrong XML file for my RSS feed. It would of caused many people to be unable to retrieve the page with some news aggregators. I'm kind of unhappy I didn't catch it sooner, but very appreciative to Ziv. I have added a simple FOAF profile, emphasis on the simple. I am working on some new stuff for the site, and tweaking the CSS a bit. I will update again later.

Congressional Copy Editors Needed To Prevent Future Diplomatic Incidents A minor typo in an unofficial transcript at a Congressional hearing a couple of weeks ago caused Sudan to think the U.S. had conducted a secret nuclear weapons test there in 1962. As one might expect, they didn't take the news well.
It snowballed: within a day, the Chinese news service was reporting that the Sudanese government held the U.S. responsible for "cancer spread in Sudan" caused by "U.S. nuclear experiments in the African country in 1962-1970."

Sanchez Perjury Proof ? That depends on the meaning of "never" Mainstream media once again caught with pants down as blogger citizen-journalist notes apparent perjury by Gen. Sanchez during testimony before the US Congress concerning whether he authorized torture or not. The Globe and Mail noticed the ACLU release of a FOIA-obtained memo showing that Sanchez did in fact authorize torture, but the implication of perjury seems to have escaped MSM notice, to be pointed out by a blogger Metafilter's own citizen journalist Mark Kraft, who declares : "Sanchez is clearly guilty of perjury, and should face the wrath of Congress... and the Senate should determine the guilt of his boss, Donald Rumsfeld, while they're at it."

The case all hinges on the meaning of the word "never" which - rumor holds - is much more flexible in Sanchez' native "Never-never Land" where - as with the rumored numerous Eskimo terms for different kinds of snow - denizens of that realm have many different meanings for "never", some of which in fact mean "sometimes" or "occasionally" !

...made a mistake, that is! The fifth consecutive error in the TRU multipacks has been found. My buddy Mike over at Jedi Temple Archives writes in to point out that not only have they added the "Skirmish at Carkoon" set to the site, but they've also spotted a mistake on the back on the box. Each of the guards (Klaatu, Barada and Nikto) are named incorrectly. It's enough to make Gort come back to earth and institute some quality control!

Every time I go on vacation, I vow to make it a low-tech trip for a change. And every single time, a day or so before stepping on the plane, I go, "shyeah, right." This year was no exception. "tri" Here's a little map to help us to navigate this forking mess:

 Thatware -> PHPNuke
                    -> myPHPNuke  ->
X-oops -> E-Xoops
                    -> PostNuke   ->
Envolution
                                  -> Xaraya

All the above versions are still actively developed. Amazing!

Black widow pop. "With tATu, Ivan Shapovalov took the media's obsession with paedophilia, and spun it into a chart-topping lesbo-schoolgirl pop act. Now he's trying to do the same with Islamic terrorism. On Sept 11 in Moscow, he launched nATo, a 16-year-old girl who dresses in a Burqua, much like the Black Widow suicide bombers who are currently terrorising Russia. With the Beslan massacre only a week old, Nato's launch - complete with invitations designed like plane tickets - was not a huge success... Mindful of the dire consequences of being a dissenting voice in Putin's Russia these days, Shapovalov is planning to launch nATo properly in London later this year, and get a recording contract here." stolen from popbitch

WHO image rattles plasma TV owner: Not what you want out of an expensive TV.

[Bryant] Ayala of Bondurant [Iowa] said he noticed Monday night that the blue frame used by WHO-TV to warn viewers about winter weather closings appeared to have been burned into his recently purchased plasma screen.

A Web site called PlasmaTVBuyingGuide.com said that images can be burned into plasma TV screens, particularly when the image is displayed for more than a few minutes at a time. The problem is more common during the first 200 hours of use, according to the site.

Remember that this is why screensavers moved around originally — because of the mythical "burn in." Supposedly this problem was resolved for CRTs a long time ago, but I guess plasmas are still in their infancy.

After meeting the author of 'Atlantis, Alien Visitation and Genetic Manipulation' (and subsequently reading it), I've embarked on an intellectual journey that's been... strange, to say the least. As noted in a recent post, I've been diving into similar writings that explore the idea that humans are actually extraterrestrial hybrids. Before you dismiss the idea outright, you might care to question all the unanswered questions. I personally believe that there's intelligent life out there - and that's exactly why it's choosing not to reveal itself to us outright. Some say Niburu is coming, others say that Planet X is nothing more than bad astronomy. Have YOU ever had a close encounter of the weird kind?...

Stealth Inflation: Checking Your Bill
For A New Charge Called Oops

Stealth Inflation: Checking Your Bill
For A New Charge Called Oops
12/04/2003 02:37 AM
We've had plenty of posts recently about all the extra hidden fees that show up on phone bills, credit card statements, bank statements, etc. These are often named to look as though they're required by the government, when the truth is anything but that. The amount of money such fees generate is staggering: "$100 million for hotels this year, $2 billion for banks, $11 billion for credit-card companies - and an average of 20 percent extra on every phone bill" according to this article in the NY Times, which refers to such tactics as stage one of "stealth inflation." What's stage two? It's all of the billing mistakes these companies make - which always seem to end up in their favor. Everybody, it seems, has stories of companies incorrectly billing them, and having to waste endless hours on the phone clearing up the charges. The article suggests it's a sneaky way of getting more out of customers, but the companies (of course) deny it - pointing out that it costs them much more to handle the customer complaints and corrections. Of course, that's only true if the customer notices the mistake - and, as someone point out, if it's just a random error, wouldn't there be just as many in the end-users' favor? While it is tempting to believe that there's a grand conspiracy out there, my guess is that it's simply bad processes in most cases, as poorly trained workers with bad systems just do whatever they can, and don't really care about fixing mistakes as they make them - and the systems aren't designed to catch these mistakes themselves, unless they go in the wrong direction.
