Motorola's MPx220 Smartphone coming in
February
12/06/2003 04:28 PM
It's pretty much an open secret that this February Motorola is planning to introduce the MPx220, an updated version of their MPx200 Smartphone that's supposed to run the 2003 version of the Smartphone operating system and have both Bluetooth and a built-in digital camera, three features which the MPx200 currently lacks. But what we didn't know was that it is also supposed to support AT&T Wireless' new high-speed EDGE data network. This explains why they're giving them away on Amazon for free with service activation -- they've gotta get rid of all the old phones before the MPx220 arrives. Thanks to reader Thom Kozik for getting us the scoop on this....

That new MPx200 Smartphone might not have Bluetooth, something which would make it easier to use the phone as a wireless modem for a laptop or a PDA, but almost as if to make up for that shortcoming, Motorola has published a step-by-step guide to how use the phone as a modem by using a USB cable. Motorola's V551

Motorola's V551 03/14/2005 04:23 PM
The V551 is a Quad band clam style flip phone released last fall by Motorola. Outstanding features of the V551 include a VGA camera with video recording capabilities, one-touch web and camera access, EDGE high-speed transfer rates, Bluetooth wireless technology, and a crisp, clear, bright, 65k TFT colour (176 x 220 pixels) internal display. The phone has a monochrome 2-line external display that displays time, call information, battery, and signal strength and features a blue backlight. A VGA camera lens and self portrait mirror sit above the display allowing the user to capture photos. The camera does not have a flash though it has 4x digital zoom and dedicated one touch camera key for one touch video capture and playback. The camera allows for 10 second video clips and the phone features 5 MB of user memory. Up to 1000 entries are able to be stored in the phone plus up to an additional 250 on SIM card. The V551 is 3.5" x 1.87" x 0.83" (49mm x 89mm x 24.6mm) and weighs 4.4 oz (114g) and contains a standard Lithium-Ion 780 mAh battery that gives the phone a standby time of up to 235 hours and talk time of up to 425 minutes. The phone also features MP3 & polyphonic ringtones, a 22 Khz polyphonic speaker, picture phonebook, voice-activated dialing, built-in hands-free speaker phone, MMS, SMS, predictive text and SMTP, POP3, IMAP4 email client, and other features including a calculator, currency converter, date and clock, datebook with reminder alerts, an alarm clock and voice record. The buttons are large and easy to press making the phone a breeze to use when text messaging or dialing long numbers. The menu is easy to navigate and doesn't take long to master the functions. The phone has a good selection of cool animated screensavers, wallpapers and ringtones that make the it fun to use and easily customised. A disadvantage to this phone is that it flips open quite easily. Spymac discovered this as the phone opened itself a couple of times while stashed inside a bag when not in use. Along with the V551, Spymac tested out Motorola's Bluetooth Headset. Using the headset is simple and straightforward and can be done by charging the headset and then pairing it with the phone. The pairing process was straightforward and took less than a minute. The sound quality of this headset was about average. The headset heavily picked up background noise, making it hard for the person on the other line to hear. It was also quite bulky and uncomfortable, but many users would be willing to put up with some of these negative qualities to have a wireless headset. The V551's clean and stylish design, MP3 ringtones, and VGA camera set this phone apart from many others and makes it appealing to the young market, while many of the other features like Bluetooth, and high-speed EDGE data transfer, and Quad band GSM frequency range appeal to professionals and business consumers. These features, along with the mass appeal, make the V551 one of the top phones in this price range on the market. Sample picture Pros: Excellent bright, sharp screen Bluetooth Quad band Good battery life Built-in IM client Cons: No external photo caller ID Slightly heavy If your company has a product you would like Spymac to review, please send an email to news@spymac.com.

imageMotitopia's Russell Beattie just spent a week with Motorola's A845, one of the first two phones to support AT&T Wireless's high-speed 3G wireless service (UMTS/WCDMA), and posted a really interesting article about his experience, somewhere between product review and reflection on the strengths and shortcomings on modern day phone OSes, push email, wireless broadband, and the future of useful handsets. Or at least I think that's what it's about. There isn't a single picture.

The Wakeup+ really isn't the first time we've seen an alarm clock that supports playback of MP3, but it may be the first time we've seen it done right. It supports the USB On-The-Go standard, so you can plug USB memory devices right into the port found on the reverse of the unit. MIB has also confirmed the clock to work with the iPod mini and iPod shuffle.

Alarm clock that hides

Alarm clock that hides 03/29/2005 08:54 PM
David Pescovitz: Clocky is an alarm clock that hides when you hit its snooze button. It was developed by Gauri Nanda at the MIT Media Lab. From the project description:
Clocky Images Clocky-CloseupWhen the alarm clock goes off and the snooze button is pressed, Clocky will roll off the bedside table and wheel away, bumping mindlessly into objects on the floor until it eventually finds a spot to rest. Minutes later, when the alarm sounds again, the sleeper must get up out of bed and search for Clocky. This ensures that the person is fully awake before turning it off. Small wheels that are concealed by Clocky's shag enable it to move and reposition itself, and an internal processor helps it find a new hiding spot every day.

I don't like being told when to wake up but I've come to terms with the idea that I have to. In designing Clocky, I was in part inspired by kittens I've had that would bite my toes every morning.

Clocky, Rolling Alarm Clock 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

clocky_rolling_alarm_clock.jpgGizmodo being the family-oriented, award-winning weblog that it is, I'm disinclined to tell you what I first thought the Clocky looked like. On closer inspection, that's carpet, although Gauri Nanda might've done better with a more vibrant color. Regardless, Clocky rolls off your nightstand, bounces off your startled dog and finds a new place to hide once you press the snooze button. Maybe one day, we'll have an alarm clock that just crawls on your chest and wets itself. We can dream, can't we?
