Sliding Autonomy Demonstrated in UAVs
Sliding Autonomy Demonstrated in UAVs
07/27/2004 10:47 AMA single human fighter pilot and a swarm of UAVs could work together
to
carry out a single mission according to a NewScientist.com
story. The scenario has been simulated by QinetiQ in the UK. The human
pilot
supplies a goal, such as searching the area for enemy targets, and the
UAVs carry it out autonomously. The system is a real-world example of
the use of robots with sliding autonomy described in our July 23rd
story

the November 2 elections. There are reports of armed men roaming the
streets outside the capital, in conflict with security forces.

I can't solve it! If everyone who reads Boing Boing spends ten minutes

work in Safari for me; I had to use IE)

Microsoft Research Opens Its Doors
Microsoft Research Opens Its Doors
06/10/2004 09:54 AMFinding the shortest distance between two points sounds easy enough,
but computing that route takes too long and consumes too much computer
memory. Researchers at Microsoft Corp. are tackling the problem so
that, in the next few years, computers can map the fastest route as
well as make fast adjustments for road work or traffic jams, said
Michael Schroeder, assistant director of Microsoft Research's Silicon
Valley lab here. It comes down to developing a better mapping
algorithm, one efficient enough to do massive computations in the palm
of someone's hand.

how the Bush economic recovery is working out for you) once a month

The Copyright Cops Really Are Busting
Down Doors
01/09/2004 09:50 PMLast month when it was announced that the RIAA was
hiring
the former head of the ATF, I joked about how the copyright cops
might soon be busting down your door. What I didn't realize was that
it's no joke, and it's already happening. Found on
Slashdot is the news that the RIAA has been hiring ex-law enforcement
officials, outfitting them with police-style outfits, including black
"raid" vests with yellow lettering stenciled on the back to spell
RIAA, and
sending
them out to scare unauthorized vendors of CDs and confiscating
what they find. While I have no sympathy for those selling such CDs,
this does seem to go well over the line. The RIAA claims that it's
very effective, and they don't mean for the vendors to actually think
they're police - but the effect suggests otherwise. In that case, you
could make the argument that they're falsely impersonating law
enforcement officials
and stealing the CDs they take. They do
make the vendor sign an "incident report" indicating that confiscating
the CDs is "voluntary" - but if you're scared to death you're about to
be arrested, it doesn't seem very voluntary.
