I'm beginning to think that it could be an interesting subject to study what cultural/national situations are referenced by 419 "advance fee" scam emails. While the most common such email comes from Nigeria, they've adjusted over time to pick up on other countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, they're trying to pick up on events, like the Olympics. They all look pretty much the same, though - and if you're pattern matching ability is so weak that you can't realize this is the exact same scam you've got other problems. Still, some people continue to fall for such scams on a regular basis.

GPS Navigation #3

GPS Navigation #3 01/10/2004 06:47 PM
On my first trip with my Garmin navigation system (Model 2610), I got lost within a quarter mile of home. Well, I didn't get lost because that doesn't happen when you have an omniscient navigator. I did manage to make a wrong — unindicated — turn, I think because I was not used to how far away an intersection is when the navigator says that I should turn left in 400 feet. A few seconds after you make the wrong turn, the navigator calmly says that you are "off course" and recalculates the route. As a result, it took me...

mars navigation history

mars navigation history 01/04/2004 08:21 PM
The most accurate navigation in history. "We had to know everything from how the iron molten lava in the center of the Earth was churning to how plate tectonic movements were affecting the wobble of the Earth to how the plasma in the atmosphere delayed the radio signals to and from the Deep Space Network stations". ..even the seemingly insignificant solar radiation pressure and thermal radiation forces acting on the spacecraft to a level equal to less than a billionth of the acceleration of gravity one feels on the Earth needed to be taken into account. This mission set a new standard for navigation accuracy for all future interplanetary missions.

Accesskeys: Unlocking Hidden Navigation 01/07/2004 07:10 PM
Your favorite applications have shortcut keys. So can your site, thanks to the XHTML accesskey attribute. Accesskeys make sites more accessible for people who cannot use a mouse. Unfortunately, almost no designer uses accesskeys, because, unless they View Source, most visitors can't tell that you've put these nifty navigational shortcuts to work on your site. In this issue, Stuart Robertson unlocks the secret of providing visible accesskey shortcuts.

Indoor Navigation for Mobile Robots 12/02/2003 12:24 AM
topazx2 pointed out a recent BetterHumans.com article on indoor robot navigation. It describes a research paper (PDF format) written by Philipp Althaus of the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. Althaus proposes improving indoor mobile robot navigation by making the robot remember less. Instead of making maps showing walls and obstacles, robots using Philipp's method remember only specific positions, greatly reducing the computation load.

Got content? Got pages and pages of content? Wouldn't it be nice if you could offer your readers a drop-down menu providing instant access to any page, without having to sit down and program the darned thing? By marrying a seemingly forgotten XHTML element to simple, drop-in JavaScript, Christian Heilmann shows how to do just that. There's even a PHP backup for those whose browsers lack access to JavaScript. Turn on, tune in, drop-down.

Smart Carpet for RoboVac Navigation

Smart Carpet for RoboVac Navigation 06/17/2005 07:11 PM
Vorwerk, a German company, is working on a Smart Carpet system to help robotic vacuums navigate. The system uses radio frequency identification (RFID) tags at approximately one tag every 1.5 inches square attached to the underside of the carpet. The robotic vacuum would have a grid map of all the unique RFID tag codes and an RFID reader so it would be able to read where it is at any given moment. A robotic vacuum should then be able to intelligently navigate even remembering which areas it has missed and be able to go back and vacuum those spots.
