iPod and the Car Stereo

iPod and the Car Stereo 01/04/2005 08:49 AM

App le's iPod rocks car-stereo makers: It looks like L awyer Milloy was way ahead of his time.

Looking to capitalize on the digital music player's sales success over the holidays, auto electronics makers are rushing to develop plug-in adapters that let drivers pick tunes from their iPods using the controls of their car stereos.

It's a market that can't be ignored: Some retailers sold out of Apple Computer's iPod during the holiday shopping blitz. Analysts estimated Apple sold more than 4 million iPods during the holiday rush; that could push the number of iPod users to 10 million.

By simply attaching an iPod inside the glove compartment, BMW drivers can control their music libraries through the car's audio system and steering wheel. iPot: Internet-Enabled Hotpot 04/11/2005 08:18 AM

ipot_pot.jpgThe Zojurushi Corporation has developed the first Internet-Enabled Hot Pot. The i-Pot monitors its usage statistics and sends them off wirelessly (802.11x, presumably), allowing other parties to monitor your tea-drinking habits with bated breath. The marketed application for the i-Pot rests largely with the elderly—if your obaasan misses her regular tea break, the i-Pot can send a message to someone so they can check up on her. As the product page says, "The electric pot becomes the barometer of vigor." Available for roughly $50 in Japan, with a one month trial option available.

blue_tooth.jpg imageAll Book of Revelation and Book of Orwell and such beside, does anybody really want to install a bit of electronics in their jaw that only has 512MB of memory, Bluetooth-enabled or otherwise? The dDrive is a concept from industrial design firm Creganna that would be designed to store medical records, security clearances, etc., and while I don't have a huge problem with that in and of itself, I don't think I'll be giving up one of my teeth just for something that's going to be obsolete in a year. At least not just for storage - get a Bluetooth-enabled cellphone headset in there and we'll talk about it.

Either the Mini isn't supported any longer, or, more likely, someone within BMW's marketing department didn't want to dillute the Beemer brand with their low-end cousin. Whichever -- it's still been removed from the site.

Wal-Mart Selling iPod Shuffle Mini

Wal-Mart Selling iPod Shuffle Mini 02/01/2005 09:08 PM

wal-pod.jpg imageCNet is reporting that Wal-Mart has begun shipping small quantities of the iPod mini to select outlets, possibly heralding a full-fledged adoption of the iPod line as a complement to its own flash player and music store. If nothing else, it is a sign of the iPod's complete transition to a commodity, branded product first, and a technological nerd gadget second. Whatever you think of Wal-Mart—whether devilish idol of all that is unholy about capitalism or just the multi-headed sentient cancer spurting forth from a humming black obelisk in the heart of Arkansas—there's no denying they move a lot of product.

Kensington Optical Elite

Kensington Optical Elite 03/11/2003 09:44 AM
The other day I asked what’s the best optical mouse, and I got a bunch of comments.

So... what did I end up with?

Here’s how the decision process went.

1. The feedback I got suggested there are three great mouse makers: Kensington, Microsoft, and Logitech.

2. My instinct is as always to support the little guy, so Microsoft was provisionally eliminated as a choice.

3. Then the feedback I got, and the research I did, suggested that Kensington has better Mac OS X software and support than Logitech. So I chose Kensington.

4. Then—how to choose a specific mouse? I wanted one in the $20 - $50 range that had at least two buttons and a scroll wheel. It had to be optical, of course (that was the whole point). Trackpads not allowed. And, of course, it had to not be completely ugly. (Hyper-concern with aesthetics is the mark of a good Mac user.)

This left just a few mice to choose from. I chose the Kensington Optical Elite.

There were some runners-up—the PocketMouse Pro, for instance.

But I’ve been totally happy with the Optical Elite.
