I second that emotion

I second that emotion 12/30/2003 01:16 AM

Karlin talks about the main downside of working at home: DIY neighbors. Yep. In my case, neighbors (particularly the apartment upstairs) have sometimes been a pain, but the worst for me is Heuston train station (across the river from my apartment). They've been doing expansions and repairs to it for more than a year and a half and sometimes they use pneumatic hammers (is that the right term?) for long stretches, even at ridiculous hours like at one or two in the morning. This very morning I was woken up by the racket of concrete being smashed... or whatever it was. Good thing I don't sleep much anyway. All in all, however, the advantages make it worthwhile when you work on your own.

Red Sox and emotion

Red Sox and emotion 01/07/2004 06:47 PM

Fellow NY resident -- but like me, of solid New England stock -- Lockhart Steele has a great post on the Red Sox, baseball, and The Business of Emotion. Talking about the likely trades of Sox Manny Ramierez and Nomar Garciaparra, Lock asks, "is the core of sports fandom rooting for favorite players, or the team?"

For my own part, it's team first. I'll always be a Sox fan. When one of my teams trades a player I'm not crazy about (e.g. Celtics unloading lazy Antoine Walker to the Mavs), I'm extra pleased with the team. And I have to say, I wouldn't be too sad to see Ramierez traded for A-Rod. But Nomar? Oy, now that's a tough one, because I really like Nomar. Then my thinking gets all player-centric and I wonder, couldn't he just play third instead?

Cars That Show Emotion

Cars That Show Emotion 07/26/2004 05:31 AM
Anthropomorphic cars usually only exist in TV shows like Knight Rider or 'Herbie Goes ______' movies . Though drivers can expres s their feelings with after-market car accessories (or various hand signals to indicate their true feelings), real cars have not been able to express themselves -- until now. With US 6,757,593, inventors at Toyota have claimed the rights to cars that can show a variety of different emotions by wagging antennas, crying tears, raising eyebrows, etc. The car itself determines what emotions to show using software that records some user input along with road conditions and driving behavior. While this all sounds cute and amusing, I'm not sure I'd want my car to be showing a guilty smile the next time I'm caught speeding.

Neurology of love shows no emotion, only
goal-seeking
11/12/2003 01:26 PM
The early stages of love are governed by parts of the brain that are used for goal-seeking and reward, and resembles obsessive-compulsive disorder:
The early stages of a romantic relationship spark activity in dopamine-rich brain regions associated with motivation and reward. The more intense the relationship is, the greater the activity.

The regions associated with emotion, such as the insular cortex and parts of the anterior cingulate cortex, are not activated until the more mature phases of a relationship.

Basics of the Unix philosophy

Basics of the Unix philosophy 02/10/2003 12:07 PM
The 'Unix philosophy' originated with Ken Thompson's early meditations on how to design a small but capable operating system with a clean service interface. It grew as the Unix culture learned things about how to get maximum leverage out of Thompson's design. It absorbed lessons from many sources along the way.

The Unix philosophy is not a formal design method. It wasn't handed down from the high fastnesses of theoretical computer science as a way to produce theoretically perfect software. Nor is it that perennial executive's mirage, some way to magically extract innovative but reliable software on too short a deadline from unmotivated, badly managed and underpaid programmers.

The Unix philosophy (like successful folk traditions in other engineering disciplines) is bottom-up, not top-down. It is pragmatic and grounded in experience. It is not to be found in official methods and standards, but rather in the implicit half-reflexive knowledge, the expertise that the Unix culture transmits. It encourages a sense of proportion and skepticism — and shows both by having a sense of (often subversive) humor. -- ESR

A wonderful essay on the art of programming. The complete book is at http://www.catb.org/~esr/writings/taoup/html/
