ReplayTV To Honor Mislabeled Three Year
Service Contracts
01/07/2004 06:36 PM

No surprise here, but after the stink that was raised a few weeks back about how Repla yTV sold a bunch of mislabeled boxes that claimed to include three years of free service - the company has decided to back down and honor the service contract. Probably, someone took the time to figure out that giving away three years of free service to a fairly small number of customers was going to be cheaper than paying the lawyers to defend the lawsuit that was surely coming. Of course, it probably would have helped if they'd done that calculation (and factored in the potential cost of the bad PR) before they played the role of the Grinch and took back the "free service" many people thought they were giving to friends and family for the holidays.

Amazon.com - ReplayTV RTV5040 40-Hour Digital Video Recorder $139.94 After Rebate.

"Amazon is selling the ReplayTV RTV5040 40-Hour Digital Video recorder for $239.94 with a $50 rebate (exp. 3/31/03) and another $50 rebate (exp 3/16/03 - copy of UPC). Please Note: Activation of this product requires payment of either a $9.95 monthly service fee or a $250 one-time service activation fee.  More info about activation here. Just $129.94 with a $10 off $75 coupon." [More Stuff 4 Less Bargain Blog]

That means you can get a 40-hour DVR for $390 total. Not bad considering how expensive these machines still are. Another $100 and I think they'll start cutting into the mainstream some. If you've been waiting, perhaps this is a more appealing price point for you?

Another ReplayTV Convert

Another ReplayTV Convert 03/11/2003 10:45 AM

Well, I'm certainly doing my part to maintain SonicBlue's bottom line. Bryce Yehl just bought a ReplayTV 5040 and it's already having an effect on him:

"In spite of the fact that I'm already used to watching my favorites shows on my own schedule, I do see my viewing habits changing. It's that Magic Pause Button. I like it. A lot."

Even better, he's pointed me to ReplayPC and QVision, two utilities for extracting shows from newer Replays to your PC. I've ordered a Linksys WET11 Bridge so when it gets here, I'll have to try these out. I figure I should be able to pull a couple of shows off the new Replay, convert their formats, and load them on my Arc hos Multimedia Jukebox to go. Then when we go on vacation, I can take music and video with us!

A Life Where TiVo Has Always Existed

"...My daughter was only 3 months old when it arrived and we set it up. As far as my daughter knows, TiVo has always been around. Now that she (and our TiVo) are three years old, and there are some very interesting things I've been able to observe.

First - she doesn't watch much TV (an allotted hour per day), but when she does watch it, she gets a choice of a recent episode of any of her favorite pre-recorded shows (current favorites are Dora the Explorer and Caillou), and she can watch it at any time of day. We get to choose what shows we'd like to allow her to watch, set up a Season Pass, and we're done.

Second - Commercials are an infrequent novelty to her. We always fast-forward through commercials, or watch non-commercial shows. When she does occasionally see a full commercial, she's fascinated, and will often ask us to stop so she can see what's going on. How can we demonstrate to her the evils of commercial interruption, when she has never had to experience it?

Third - Ignorance of Schedules/Programming - she has no idea when her favorite shows are on, never has. She gets quite confused when we are watching a non-TiVo TV, and she asks to watch 'a kids show', and we have to explain that this TV won't do what ours at home does. We've sometimes shortened this explanation to 'This TV is broken', which she seems to accept, and will wait until we get home to watch our 'fixed' TV.

Fourth - pausing taken for granted. She is now the master of paused TV - saying 'Can you please stop this for a minute - I have to use the Potty'....

I compare all of these observations to my TV-watching experience as a child - always excited about Saturday Morning, because that's when cartoons were on - swapping stories about the latest Evel Knievel motorcycle I saw on a commercial with the other kids, knowing they had all seen the same commercials as well. Feeling disappointed when my parents would switch off a show mid-way through because they decided it wasn't appropriate. The pain of commercial interruption, the disappointment of 'nothing's on', or the missed shows that were probably gone for good. (On a side note, anyone else remember the days where if you missed a movie in the theater, you'd never get a chance to see it again?)

There are a lot of other home entertainment developments that have changed since I was a kid, but none so radically as the TiVo experience. I never cease to be amazed when I'm zooming past a commercial with a woman dancing with a 'swiffer', and I hear my daughters small voice say: 'Wait Papa, I wanna see that'." [Eintagsfliegen ]

Kids growing up like this view their entertainment and multimedia very differently than the rest of us. Heck, as an adult I'm completely spoiled by this revolution, and the desire for this functionality spills over into other mediums (why can't I press a button to go back 7 seconds and hear what I just missed on the radio or pause it?).

It's an interactive world for them, and they shift everything.

TiVo and ReplayTV give in to Hollywood

TiVo and ReplayTV give in to Hollywood 09/09/2004 11:02 AM

Based upon the story I have just read I will predict the demise of these two companies within 2 years. It seems they have agreed to implement changes that would embed code in their machines that would limit the amount of time you can store a pay for view movie and limit how often that movie can be watched.

All I can say is they are a bunch of idiots. [Sili con Valley Mercury News]

TiVo, ReplayTV Make Their Devices Less
Useful

TiVo, ReplayTV Make Their Devices Less
Useful
09/09/2004 02:40 PM
TiVo and ReplayTV have both announced plans to inco rporate copy protection technology in their boxes that would let content providers set content to "expire." The idea is to protect movie makers who are afraid to release movies to PPV channels where they could be recorded by users who then choose not to buy the DVD -- or at least that's the theory. However, as is pointed out in the article, this is a "feature" that makes the device less useful to people. They buy it in order to record stuff to watch it on their schedule, not the broadcasters'. By limiting that, the devices become less useful. Once again, instead of embracing what the technology can do to get more people to watch their content, they're taking a backwards step, making their content less useful. While TiVo and Replay will claim they need to do this, that's not true. If they're smart, others will come along, refusing to take away features from customers.

Secret Service interrogate 15-year-old
for making forbidden art
04/27/2004 11:43 AM
A teenager drew some anti-war posters that were critical of Bush's policies, and his art teacher alerted school administrators, who in turn called the police. The cops went to the feds, and the Secret Service questioned the boy about his art.
The drawing that drew the most attention showed a man in what appeared to be Middle Eastern-style clothing, holding a rifle. He also was holding a stick with the oversize head of President Bush on it. The student said the head was enlarged because it was intended to be an effigy, Cravens said. The caption called for an end to the war in Iraq.

With ReplayTV out of the picture,
Studios turn on TiVo

With ReplayTV out of the picture,
Studios turn on TiVo
07/23/2004 04:46 AM
TiVo's strategy has always been to play nice with the movie studios. While SonicBlue was shipping the Replay with automated commercial skipping and show-sharing, TiVo was adding DRM-based systems for cautiously moving programming around your house and only your house. It worked -- sorta. Replay got sued into oblivion, and TiVo was left standing.

But now that the studios have chased the TiVo competitors out of the market, they're turning on their pet PVR. TiVo wants to deliver a product that will allow you to share your programming among no more than 10 sets -- this isn't the indiscriminate sharing that the Broadcast Flag advocates said they feared: this is heaily DRMed, controlled and modest sharing.

And the Studios and the NFL don't like it. So they're demanding that FCC order TiVo to disable this feature. Link

An Honor

An Honor 12/19/2004 03:18 PM
I just had the honor of introducing some extraordinary people to a Silicon Valley audience. They were Jim Hake, CEO and founder of Spirit of America, which I wrote about last spring. His operation is bringing help from U.S. citizens to people who need it in Iraq and Afghanistan, and it's worth your time to look at it. The stars of the lunch program, however, were Omar and Mohammed Ali, two of three brothers who have been writing the Iraq the Modelblog for over a year. It's an on-the-ground look at conditions they're seeing in a nation that's seen so much horror. They're working on a citizen journalism project for coverage of the upcoming elections. I wish them well on that and hope I can help in some small way. They have a leg up on this project because there's a new Arabic-language blogging tool, funded by Spirit of America, which will host blogs -- free of charge -- for people in the Arabic-speaking Middle East. Nice work by all.

What an honor!

I was going about my usual routine: check email, then NetNewsWire. ReadingEd.com comes up in the list, and bam, I show up on his list of "great sites, mostly web related, that I have found through my server logs." This is such an honor, and a surprise. I'm glad there are people out there that get something from reading my weblog. Thank you, I truly appreciate it!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and thanks for reading my weblog.

Tomorrow night's edition of "Nightline&quo t; on ABC will be a departure from the norm: the entire program will consist of Ted Koppel reading the names and showing the pictures of more than 700 US servicemembers killed in Iraq since March 19, 2003. Here's an interview with the Nightline executive producer whose idea it was. The idea is not without controversy: Lisa de Moraes of the WaPo decries it as "a cheap, content-free stunt designed to tug at our heartstrings and bag a big number on the second night of the May ratings race." (Is this really Nielsen-bait?) And the Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns eight ABC affiliates, is refusing to air the broadcast, calling it "motivated by a political agenda designed to undermine the efforts of the United States in Iraq."

Couple Busted In Online Coupon Scam 04/15/2004 02:23 PM
Fake online coupons are nothing new, but this short AP article about a couple being arrested for selling thousands of dollars worth of fake online coupons has me a bit confused. The woman says she stopped as soon as she found out it was illegal - which raises a bunch of other questions not answered by the article. Was she creating the coupons herself? If so, then she must have known it was illegal. If not, where were they coming from? The article does mention that her husband was charged with "forgery, fraud, theft and other crimes," so it's possible that he was creating the fake coupons and giving them to her to sell. Still, you might think she would have asked where they came from. Of course, I also wonder who buys coupons? I always thought coupons were the things you got for free with the Sunday paper.
