Home Is Where The WiFi Is (And In Some
Fast Food Restaurants)
01/07/2004 06:35 PM

A new study shows that more and more homes are likely to get WiFi connections. This seems like one of the more obvious predictions around, but it's still interesting to look at the numbers. The study points out that there are currently about 100 million broadband connections to the home worldwide - and only 5 million home users have WiFi. However, with the technology getting cheaper every day, and the clear benefit of having a wireless network in the home, it's likely to grow pretty rapidly (and, of course, that 100 million number isn't static either). This leads to two thoughts: (1) we still need to make setting up a WiFi network easier. Early adopters will mess around with finicky access points, but most users won't. It really needs to be plug and play. (2) Once more homes get WiFi, expect the unexpected in how they're used. Just like businesses are discovering - once that wireless network is there, there's no reason not to use it for other purposes as well. More devices are going to come with WiFi, and if they can just hop on an existing network, people are going to come up with all sorts of creative uses. Meanwhile, McDonald's continues their "we'll test a different location every few months" rollout of WiFi, as they've agreed to WiFi up over 500 restaurants in the UK. It looks like they're just teaming up with BT to be a part of BT's Openzone WiFi offering. That doesn't seem like the best choice, since already there are (reasonable) complaints that Openzone's pricing is way too high for what people get. In early tests in the US McDonald's was using a very smart pricing plan (buy a meal, get an hour of free service). It's unclear why they're not going with a similar plan in the UK. By offering up service with a meal, the internet access becomes a promotion to get more people into the restaurant. By charging insanely high fees for it, it doesn't bring in too many extra people, and certainly won't bring in much money.

Fast Food Nation

In light of McDonald's decision to team with Wayport, how many other chains are left? In an interview earlier today with Jeff Damir, a VP at Cometa Networks, he noted that there were many, many other quick-service restaurants (QSR) out there to talk to who might have an audience more interested in Wi-Fi hotspots. Sure enough, QSR Magazine has a list of the top 50 QSR chains by dollar volume as of 2002. Only two of these chains, Starbucks and McDonald's, have a comprehensive Wi-Fi plan. Panera and Schlotzsky's have Wi-Fi in some locations with plans for expansion. The total number of chain stores in the top 50 are 117,468, a staggering number, of which about 15 percent are committed to have Wi-Fi within a couple of years....

My new favorite fast food joint

My new favorite fast food joint 05/13/2004 02:22 AM

I caught this story about Burgerville in the NYTimes last month and was intrigued to hear that an Oregon fast food place was doing seasonal items and using local meat and produce, just like a high falutin' restuarant. I had seen Burgervilles often since I moved to Oregon and I've ignored them all this time because they appeared to be some local-yokel chain with a generic, boring name and exterior to match.

Today I finally checked them out and I was blown away. Now, I've read Fast Food Nation, and I know pretty much everyone in the industry is panned except for In-N-Out. I enjoy In-N-Out burger whenever I'm in California, but after trying Burgerville, I have to say that if Schlosser wrote about them, there's no doubt he would have praised them more than In-N-Out.

The following is a partial list of what they have going for them. Every couple of months, whatever's in season is an item on the menu, and they buy from local producers. My strawberry shake tonight was loaded with a ridiculous amount of chunked fresh strawberries. They offer not one but two different veggie burgers on the menu. They let you add local favorite Tillamook cheese to burgers, just like I have at home. The turkey burgers are made with only cage-free birds. All the beef is Oregon-raised and fed vegetarian diets so you'll never have a mad cow problem. The fish and chips use halibut caught in the Northwest. All buns come from an area bakery. They had nutrition info right on counter, clear as day. And while waiting for my food inside one of their locations today, I noticed in a rack of information on the company there was a pamphlet explaining some healthy environment certification that the chain received because they only buy from responsible farmers and ranchers. Crazy, no?

The food was great, better than what I expect from fast food, but the company philosophy and the way they conduct their business really blew me away. It's not everyday you find a place with a drive-thru selling greasy burgers that cares about anything aside from the quick buck. I think I may have found something better than In-N-Out and I'm glad to know it's in my new home state.

Sharing the home-user wifi with
neighbours?
11/15/2003 05:42 PM
I have bought a wireless adsl modem router, and a wifi card for my laptop. I'm wondering what people have to say, about the benefits, and problems, with sharing a wifi with neighbours, and what you have to say about the best approach to getting this done! For example, in a typical london residential area, people don't know their neighbours, and I certainly would be shy to talk to them! I suppose a wifi may be a good icebreaker, to get together?

I have my WiFi device sitting in a second floor office with MAC filtering and WEP enabled at the highest encryption level. I live in a residential area and from my second floor vantage point their are 11 active WiFi connections. Considering how far WiFi signal can travel everyone around on this block must have a WiFi device. What is amazing is that 9 of those are wide open. How can people be so ignorant. The statistics are amazing nation wide. Read on. [ZDNet]

Why do restaurants have menus?

Why do restaurants have menus? 06/06/2004 09:39 AM

Just back from seeing the movie "Super-size Me" and it occurred to me that, in an age of limitedless wealth, cheap food, and universal private automobiles, nutrition is best not left to amateurs (i.e., us).  Consider the process of going to a restaurant.  You, a completely ignorant and probably somewhat fat person, walk in and they hand you a long menu of potential dishes.  For each dish the menu lists a tiny fraction of the ingredients but does not fully disclose sauces or overall calories.  Even if the content of each item were fully disclosed it wouldn't do most of us much good because most of us don't know how many calories are appropriate.  Finally there is the problem that everyone gets the same quantity of food.  If you're a 5'-tall woman and order "Chicken surprise" you get the same quantity of food as a 6'-tall man who orders the same dish.

Here's an idea for a restaurant...  You walk in and give them the following information:  (1) height, (2) weight, and (3) whether or not you have exercised today.  They come back to you with a few choices, e.g., "fish, chicken, steak, or vegetarian?"  You choose one of those and finally an appropriately-sized quantity of food shows up on your table.  This is, I think, how the $1000/day fat farms operate.  But in an age of computerization it doesn't seem as though it would cost a standard restaurant anything more to operate this way.

Thoughts?

[P.S.I went through a 3-month period in which I ate almost every meal at McDonalds.  This was in 1993 while driving to Alaska and back (see Travels with Samantha).  I was a graduate student and the 59-cent hamburgers, 99-cent chicken fajitas, and drive-thrus were hard to resist.  I was about 30 years old and a tiny bit pudgy when I started the trip.  I probably lost at least 5 lbs. during that period.  I didn't order fries or regular (sugar) Coke and I was riding my bike every few days.]

Five restaurants in Paris

Five restaurants in Paris 01/22/2004 02:19 PM

The NY Times had an article the other day about Comfort Food at Comforting Prices in Paris. While all five spots sound delicious, I'm especially tempted by Le Petit Pontoise if only because it's located on rue de Pontoise, the location of my mother's first apartment, rented for her 1996 sabbatical.

[O]n a recent visit, there was a wood crate filled with freshly gathered girolle mushrooms. It's the season, and the mushrooms were too tempting not to order. Quickly sautéed so that they remained juicy and slightly chewy, they were perfectly accented with garlic and parsley.

I'm really longing for a trip to Paris, it's been just long enough (seven months) that I'm missing it very much, especially since my favorite mittens from La Samaritaine got a hole in the thumb! I mean, I could replace my mittens here in NYC, but somehow French mittens seem superior, certainly these ones are, except for their hole.

Quite The Telecom Equipment Scam

Quite The Telecom Equipment Scam 09/03/2004 07:53 PM
Broadband Reports point us to a Forbes story concerning the huge telecom equipment scam operation called Norvergence. The company was apparently selling $2,000 router/firewall boxes (that were available for $300 on eBay) by calling it "The Matrix: a merged access transport intelligent exchange." They then targeted small, non-tech-savvy businesses with fast talking salespeople promising "unlimited broadband, landline and cell phone service with no per-minute charges." Even better, they weren't actually selling them, but "leasing" them at $300/month for a minimum five year lease. Then, to make matters even more ridiculous Norvergence sold those leases to leasing and banking companies. Norvergence got all the cash ($143 million in 2003) and ran, while everyone else got screwed. Meanwhile, the founders of Norvergence have already bankrupted another telecom startup, leaving creditors in the hole by nearly $70 million, and are already hard at work on yet another telecom startup. Why not? It seems to pay so well. Is there any possible reason these guys haven't been arrested yet?

Word Processing Equipment and airlines

Word Processing Equipment and airlines 05/26/2004 06:16 PM
British Air announces before each flight that "word processing equipment" must be switched off. It's hilarious, I keep picturing someone up there in Posh Bastard Class who's booked an extra couple seats for his Xerox Word Processor and a long-suffering "word-processing-specialist" to operate it. Also, why the hell does Air Canada forbid the use of in-flight "modems and printers" (and how do they reconcile the ban on modems with the fact that they provide hideously expensive in-flight phone service, with modem jacks?)
