Politics: Small-world Phenomena and the
Dean Campaign
01/07/2004 06:30 PMThe Dean campaign is reliant on
small-world dynamics for its
power. The cross connections of egalitarian weak links of Deanie
weblogs and the aristocratic Dean hub weblog serve to
amplify good or positive information moving through the system.Of
course, this can cut the other way too. Bad or negative
information can be amplified out of proportion in this type of
network.
My guess is that the Dean network is composed of relatively
isolated clusters of nodes that rely on high throughput conduit
nodes for connectivity. If this is true, then the Dean hub
and software strategy is correct. It is using the hub weblog to pump
information to the high-throughput conduit weblogs using RSS
(which strengthens them).
Of course, the Dean campaign isn't the only organization using
the power of Internet enabled small-world networks. Groups
across the world are doing the same, including terrorists.
Terrorists? Yes. The rise of both the Internet and the
first global terrorist organization (that could challenge the world's
only remaining superpower) is closely linked.

marketing. For example: Using tools like weblogs, Meetup, and the "Get

- such as house parties or service projects - without any central
control, Dean has subverted the traditional branding ethic with great
success....

Politics: The role of the Campaign Hub
Webl0g
Politics: The role of the Campaign Hub
Webl0g
01/07/2004 06:28 PMWhat is the role of a campaign hub weblog in an online campaign?
The simple answer is that it should serve as a source of
reliable information on the campaign's activities. The more
important answer is that it should serve as a way for supporters find
each other. In other words:it should be a system for making
introductions that lead to
weak links.
How is this done? Short, punchy posts that
quote and link to
high-quality supporter weblogs. Bots can help, but they
shouldn't serve as a substitute to editorial intelligence (case in
point: the Clark
campaign weblog points inward with its posts and relies on bots
to help people find each other). Also, don't rely on
an inside team for analysis of breaking stories in the general
media. Use the community to do the analysis for you. They
will almost always do a better job. Find it, quote it, and point
to it. The more you drive readers to other community weblogs the
better. Don't hoard your readers (all the campaign weblogs could
do better with this!!).
Create synthetic weblogs that address specific issues. Draw
on the analysis done by the community to populate these synthetic
weblogs. Use editorial judgement on what is included (don't rely
on a bot!). A Wiki-like categorization system like that on Scripting News is a good way to do
this. Perhaps a simple trackback ping system could provide the
raw material to populate these synthetic weblogs (or the reverse,
categorized RSS feeds from supporter weblogs that are combined into a
single weblog flow). Get a Google pizza box and
create a search system with community-centric PageRank
for supporter weblogs.Build a Blogdex or Daypop top 40 for
community weblogs.
Build a system for supporters to easily subscribe to each
other. Aggregate the RSS links of community weblogs into one
easy to find place. Work with aggregator vendors to offer tools
configured for the campaign (don't rely on an internal effort to build the
tool -- it probably won't be best of breed and difficult to
maintain).
That's enough for this morning's coffee notes.

Niue Demonstrates Monopoly Politics Writ
Small
Niue Demonstrates Monopoly Politics Writ
Small
01/22/2004 02:13 AMFree Wi-Fi in Niue challenged artificially high telecom prices: I hope
we don't seem obsessed by the tiny island nation of Niue in the
Pacific, but this article from New Zealand's National Business Review
shows the struggle between predatory pricing by a national monopoly
and a society of Internet users wanting to offer free access. Niue's
top-level domain name, .nu, has 100,000 registrants at about $30 per
year per name. The domain name is administered by an American who runs
the servers in the US and Europe. A percentage of each fee is returned
to Niue to the Internet Users Society of Niue (IUSN). The IUSN used
the money from the fees to establish Internet access to the island,
and eventually to propose and start building island-wide free Wi-Fi
service. Unfortunately for the local monopoly telecom, this free
access bypasses the local metered phone service and could serve as a
conduit for Internet phone calls. Only 1,700 folks live on Niue now
(and they might abandon ship, according to articles after the cyclone
-- the island's highest point is 68 meters), but 20,000 Niueans live
in New Zealand, which has a complicated relationship with the
islanders. Niue is independent in local affairs; the Kiwi government
handles external affairs and defense. It also contributes $2.6 million
per year to Niue. The article notes with chagrin that the Kiwis will
pay for helping to rebuild the infrastructure in Niue, but that the
telecom monopoly will certainly continue its pricing structure....
