Keep RSS Free for All

"Cast your vote for free choice, and away from restricted, proprietary services, by using open RSS news readers and all feeds. Walling RSS up inside a proprietary garden is wrong. And expensive too!" [eWeek]

This one went through the blogosphere over the weekend, dusting up some controversy about NewsGator. However, what really caught my eye is this little image almost thrown away towards the end of the article.

Add to My Yahoo graphic

Now, isn't that graphic waaaaaaaaay better than a button that says "XML"? Here's the URL syntax that goes behind it: http://add.my.yahoo.com/rss?url=http://theshiftedlibrarian.com /rss.xml.

So now, your library can add this graphic to allow MyYahoo users to easily subscribe to your site! That would what is known as an "inroad" into the mainstream.

Request: I hope quickSub adds MyYahoo!

MyYahoo Adding RSS, OPML Support

MyYahoo Adding RSS, OPML Support 01/23/2004 01:27 AM
Scott Katz, from Yahoo's MyYahoo personalization area, points me to a beta version of an RSS module for MyYahoo pages. He says:
"While still an early release, we'd appreciate it if you (and your readers) would help us test it and provide feedback. It's not widely available today -- you need to visit a hidden URL to add it to your My Yahoo page. Once you've got the module, you can search and add feeds or import OPML files."

To Beta Test or Not To Beta Test

To Beta Test or Not To Beta Test 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
By becoming a beta tester, a user or company can establish a place on the leading edge and get a leg up on assessing new technology. But with those benefits come the risks of fouling up machines or networks. As a result, it can be a challenge for software companies to enlist testers.

New Technorati Infrastructure beta test!

New Technorati Infrastructure beta test! 01/22/2004 02:30 AM

Folks,

After 2 months of painstaking effort, I'm proud to announce the new Technorati infrastructure is up and ready for use.

Please have a look, and tell us what you think:

http://beta.technorati.com/

We focused 100% of our time on completely refurbishing our underlying event engine - essentially taking a volkswagen engine out and putting a Ferrari engine in. This new engine sports:

1) Much faster indexing - the median amount of time it takes from when someone posts something on their weblog to when it is captured and searchable via our live database is 7 minutes.

2) Much faster querying - our goal is to have every search query take less than a second, even as the database is being continuously updated. We added a query timer at the top of every results page so you can judge for yourself.

3) Much more scalable - We built this distributed database system to scale. As we track more events, we add more machines to scale. As our user traffic increases, we add more machines to scale. This should continue to work for quite some time, so we're eager to test under load.

4) Much better internationalization support - The database is entirely in UTF-8, a character set that encompasses a significant number (well, all) of non-english languages, including Japanese, Farsi, Hebrew, and many others. You can see results in multiple languages all on the same page. Localization should be significantly easier.

5) A new, smarter spider/crawler, which understands weblog posts and blogrolls much better than our old spider. You'll note that on our results pages, many results offer a "Read Full Post" capability, which take you directly to the entire microcontent post that created the link.

6) A redone results page, which should load faster, and is designed for non-browser usage as well. Lots has been moved to CSS, and we've added a nifty pager widget at the top and bottom of each page of results.

Please go and use the site - and send us feedback.

Some known issues: There are a few areas where we're still filling out content, fixing bugs and layout, like in the top 100 page, breaking news, current events, and other pages. We're looking to find showstopper bugs or problems before we move this beta infrastructure over to the production site. So, don't fret if a page you like is currently missing or if the top 100 is messed up, we're fixing that. You may also see a change in your inbound blogs/links numbers, but that is primarily due to the fact that we're still bringing the new database up to speed, so we know that some of the numbers are different.

Thanks again for your time and patience, and on behalf of the entire Technorati team, we thank you for all of your support. We're really looking forward to your feedback.

As you may or may not know, we have decided to implement open source forums that have already been in place, better tested, and more efficient than our current ones. We are very close in achieving our goals, but now we need a group of beta testers willing to test everything out on the new forums so we can get all the kinks, bugs, etc. worked out prior to the rollover. Please e-mail us if you would like to help out.

It was great to finally meet Roland and Boris and to see Stewart and Jon - again. The place really got me back into that "Gaijin" kind of frame of mind. Big guy - small seats.

Stress Testing: Using Modular Stress
Test to Test Platforms and Components
12/18/2003 12:58 AM
Modular Stress is a flexible system that performs several different types of stress testing. It is based on a set of test modules that each target individual features or components in a platform. The CETK includes a number of operating system (OS) stress modules that target major system components (for example, GWES, FileSys, Kernel, and so on). In addition, the user can create custom modules to target other platform components. The Modular Stress Test harness controls how these tests are run, that is, the sort of test environment that is desired, and collects data on system health throughout the course of a stress run.

OpenSHORE 2.0.0 Beta 1 (Beta branch)

OpenSHORE 2.0.0 Beta 1 (Beta branch) 03/29/2005 09:16 AM
Screenshot SHORE (Semantic Hypertext Object Repository) is a hypertext repository that stores data about documents and data described by documents. Access to this information is provided as hypertext. The repository stores objects that appear in documents, together with their relations in a semantic net. Hypertext navigation follows these relations in the semantic net. The SHORE server works as an HTTP server, and the client is a standard Web browser. The repository uses PROLOG as its query language and the XSB system as its query engine.
Changes:
This release integrates the latest XSB Prolog version 2.7.1 (Kinryo) as the query engine. This offers the user sophisticated deductive query possibilities to find out all sorts of information inside stored documents and about the relations among them. OpenSHORE shows query results as hypertext, which leads the user directly to found documents, semantically marked text sections (objects), and relation end points. The query engine reads facts about documents on demand from an interface to the object-oriented database of OpenSHORE, so facts must not be copied for queries.
