Systems Overview
01/08/2004 07:38 PM
Windows Server 2003 for 64-Bit Extended Systems provides high performance for both 32-bit and 64-bit applications on the same system. The underlying architecture is based on 64-bit extensions to the industry-standard x86 instruction set, allowing today's 32-bit applications to run natively on 64-bit extended processors such as AMD Opteron. At the same time, new 64-bit applications are executed in 64-bit mode, which processes more data per clock cycle, allows greater access to memory, and speeds numeric calculations. The end result is a platform that leverages the existing wealth of 32-bit applications while also providing a smooth migration path to 64-bit computing. Windows Server 2003 for 64-Bit Extended Systems is currently under development, with delivery scheduled for the second half of 2004. Pre-release versions of the operating system are available for evaluation from this Web site.

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PM
DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.

RMS allows information workers to distribute information within their organizations and define how and under what circumstances it can be used, such as when it expires and who can open, modify, print and forward it. Symantec Facing Problems With Product
Activation
10/30/2003 11:46 PM
At least Intuit realized what a waste of time and money it was to put product activation technology into their software. Once they realized the pointlessness of it, they issued a very public apology on the matter. Unfortunately, other companies aren't quite so enlightened. Symantec is having all sorts of trouble with their product activation technology, that is preventing many legitimate users from using the software they paid good money for. Symantec is now saying that they're working on it, but can't figure out what the problem is, and can't suggest a date when they'll offer a fix. Here's a simple solution: follow Intuit's lead and ditch the activation technology altogether. The simple fact is that the software is still getting pirated. You see offers for it all the time - and it only takes a hacker a little while to figure it out. So, the only people this is really impacting are the legitimate users of your product - and you're making their lives worse. Most of these people are going to go to a competitor, and will be quite vocal about why they would never purchase anything else from Symantec. Thus, it does nothing to solve the problem, angers your customers, and drives people to competitors. How does this make sense?

IPSec, which is also included in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, provides network managers with a key line of defense in protecting their networks. IPSec exists below the Transport layer, so its security services are transparently inherited by applications. IPSec provides the protections of data integrity, data origin authentication, data confidentiality, and replay protection without having to upgrade applications or train users.
