The Mac At 20: What's In Store For The
Future?

Jobs is placing his bets that Apple can win the hearts and minds of digital media and Internet consumers. If he is serious about serving up enterprise-class solutions beyond digital media, he should consider finding partners who are willing to do the heavy lifting. Dan Farber has written an interesting article on ZDNet today looking at the past 20 years of the Macintosh's history and what might be in store for both Apple and the Macintosh in the future...

DLA topics store - in the future we'll

I'm also aggregating both TE and KC topics.  But only in my DLA topics store.

Topics: Automatic for the People.

Matt Mower's written a great explanation of how the K-Collector aggregation process works. KC is a very clever system and I'm pleased to hear it doesn't actually require the KC client app on Radio or MT in order for people to participate in the KC community.

What I will do is continue with my own experiments with Movable Type. I already have the TE cloud reference in my RSS template, so I'll add the KC cloud reference too. Then as I write posts I'll add topics using my chosen MT field (at this stage 'Keyword', but I'll probably change to 'Category').

Note that I could download the MT client Matt's created, but I'd actually rather play around myself with MT and see how both KC and TE pick up my posts.

Likewise, I've asked Phil Pearson if Topic Exchange can pick up my ENT data from my RSS feed automatically. If I can get both KC and TE aggregating my ENT data, without me having to ping either one, I'll be a happy man :-)

Also I should perhaps clarify my goals with all this. In the short-term I want to:

1) Set-up MT so that I can add topic data to both KC and TE.

2) Set-up my own internal topic navigation, which ideally I'd like to synch with KC and TE (in terms of topic names).

For now I'll leave the hard part aside - i.e. synching topic data between KC and TE. Matt's done a lot of work on this in the past, using XFML and XTM and so forth, and so he can tell you it's not a trivial task. So let's call that a long-term goal.

I guess my remaining goal for the short-term is to try and convince Phil to get TE to automatically aggregate my ENT data from my RSS feed. But being a humble user, I've no idea how difficult a request this is - i.e. it's easy for me to ask the question, it may be a lot harder for Phil to do the work ;-) So I don't want to press the issue...

Also, I want to investigate Blogdigger some more to see how I can tie in my topic navigation experiments with Bloggdigger's categorisation system. Greg - any ideas for that?

The store, in the ritzy Ginza shopping district of Tokyo, covers five floors and includes a theater that can seat 84 people, a help desk and a classroom in addition to retail space. apple_osaka.jpg imageImpress Watch took advantage of Apple's offer to members of the press for a sneak preview of the Shinsaibashi store (in Osaka, Japan), and brought back images that remind me of... the Apple store in the mall. Not that it's an entirely bad thing - the mall stores are pretty swanky.

While we're on the topic of things not being bad, Apple's market in Japan certainly isn't either. This two story, 500 square meter Osaka store is the second Apple store in the country. Though the first floor appears to be your common Apple store, a glass staircase will take you to the second floor that features a bar and 25-person seminar room. The store will open to the public on the 28th, so I'm expecting a bunch of people to bum rush the place and help Apple pay for that much square footage in downtown Osaka.

While we're on the subject of Apple stores, the company also announced a third Apple store in Japan at the press event: Nagoya, to open early next year.

Lo w Cost Memory Cards to the Corner Grocery

"The first members of the Shoot & Store line include 32 MB CompactFlash and SD cards. These will be sold in grocery stores and pharmacies for $14.99.

By the middle of the year, SanDisk plans to distribute 64MB cards at an initial price of $24.99, as well as add other card formats including Memory Stick PRO." [Brighthand, via PDA 24/7]

Further down on the page, Brighthand then notes "SanDisk also just announced the first 4 GB CompactFlash card that can be used in any CompactFlash device." Granted, it will cost $1000 when it hits the market in April, but that price should fall significantly over the next year.

It's amazing that you can carry 4GB on you on a card the size of a quarter. But wait, there's more!

SimpleTech Announces 8GB Compact Flash Card

""Digital Photography Review is rep orting that SimpleTech has announced 2, 4, 5 and 8GB Type II Compact Flash Cards utilizing its pate nted IC Tower stacking technology." [Slashdot]

It's like a crazy game of poker - "I'll see your 2GB card, and raise you another 2GB." "Well, I'll double your bet and raise you another 4GB to 8...."

In 2000, I had a 128MB memory stick for my digital camera during our summer vacation. I ran out of room pretty quickly, and we had to scramble to find a place to buy another one. I paid premium price for it, and there was only one store in town that even sold them. Now I wonder how long will it be until you can buy a terabyte on a quarter-size card at the grocery store.

This type of ubiquity and utility is going to have a major effect on how we view, keep, and use digital bits and bytes, whether they be pictures, music, video, or text (information). It's the ultimate shift to have remote access to your data and files while also being able to carry the most important ones with you all the time.

Download In The Store

Download In The Store 06/25/2004 12:11 PM
Jeremiah writes "On the heels of iTunes announcement that it has sold 800,000 tracks in its first week of operation in Europe, BestBuy announces it will partner with Napster and promote it as its "leading digital music service." It's my personal belief this signals the beginning-of-the-end of the "shiny, plastic-disc" era of digital music... but I digress. The "scoop", however, is not the above stories (which you can read anywhere); they're just for context. Word on the street is a major bookseller (B&N or Borders) is planning to install WiFi in its stores *AND* provide access to libraries of digital music for download onto your device of choice. One marketing idea is to sell mp3 players in-store with a $10 gift-cert for digital downloads, or players with audio-books preloaded. To access their in-store WiFi, customers will lease a wireless NIC on an hourly basis, that's been "keyed" to only work on their network (removing the motivation to steal the nics). The hourly cost is "...somewhere around what you'd pay for a large coffee." Word is a beta will be in some west-coast stores around August-Sept." There have been similar rumors of services at certain music stores in the past, but it sounds like such talk is heating up. Of course, this does make you wonder what the purpose of the "store" is? If you can download from anywhere, why would you need to go to a store to download?
