Now *that* is a photoblog. Chronologically indexed gallery of
interplanetary snapshots from this weekend's Mars landing. The first
images sent back are of limited quality -- and only in black and white
-- because data transmission rate from Spirit's antenna back to Earth
is limited. Higher-res color images are expected to be relayed back
from the orbiting Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey Spacecraft
later today, according to Mission Control. At left:
"This mosaic image taken by the navigation camera on the Mars
Exploration Rover Spirit has been further processed, resulting in a
significantly improved 360 degree panoramic view of the rover on the
surface of Mars."

Meanwhile, back on Mars
Meanwhile, back on Mars
09/07/2004 09:48 PMI must admit I was shocked to find out today the the Mars rovers
are still quietly going about their business on the red planet.
They're still plugging along climbing through craters and scratching
rocks. The Spirit rover has travelled over two miles since it landed.
The folks at JPL are starting to sound like proud parents in their weekly status
reports.
Sol 225 was truly a mega-activity sol. Spirit awoke at 11:20 a.m.,
Gusev local solar time and stayed awake well past the afternoon
communication session with NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter without taking
a nap. Spirit hasn't done that in a long time.
I have a strange feeling that if the Martian winter causes the rovers
to hibernate that they'll wake up ready to go again next spring. Nice
work NASA. Truly something to be proud of.

01/16/2004 01:00 PMBush's well-leaked call for a serious
expansion of human space exploration deserves support.
He sounded just the right notes, including this so-true line: "We do
not know where this journey will end. Yet we know this: Human beings
are headed into the cosmos."

Yahoo Kidnaps High Res Photos
Yahoo Kidnaps High Res Photos
12/24/2003 02:35 PMOne thing that sites should learn is that when you want to add some
sort of "paid" component to a site, doing so in a way that takes
something away from users is never a good idea. You can try to charge
for adding additional features - but taking away stuff is only going
to anger people, especially if they signed up for some of the formerly
free features. Yahoo's latest move has angered a number of people.
In adjusting the terms of their online photo hosting they did one nice
thing (eliminating storage limits) and one not so nice thing (saying
you need to pay if you want to access any photo with a higher
resolution than 480 by 360). This is especially problematic because
many people had already stored such "high res" (and, no, that's not
particularly high res) photos on the site
which are now locked behind a pay wall. Yahoo claims that
they've been warning people about the impending changes for months -
but their method of warning people is pretty questionable. They put
up
banner ads telling users the terms of service were changing.
Banner ads? Those things that almost no one looks at any more? Not
the most effective way to get the word out there, and many people say
they never saw the banner ad, and suddenly no longer have access to
the photos they thought they were storing for free.

08/22/2004 02:35 AMSchool groups, sports teams, clubs, and other non-profit groups are
gearing up for start of the new school year with a way to help the
environment and raise funds. People with old cell phones can donate
them to a worthy cause through a web site that collects the phones and

Tonight: Robots on Mars, hunting for
life on Mars?
01/03/2004 03:22 PMMagic may happen this evening. The USA will attempt to safely land a
scientific golf cart on Mars at about 8.30pm, California time:
Two NASA (news - web sites) Mars landers -- Spirit and Opportunity --
are speeding toward "sweet spot" touch down sites at different, but
scientifically attractive locations on Earth's mysterious neighbor.
The opening act in this $820 million drama to place dual robot
geologists on Mars is the landing of the Mars Exploration Rover (MER)
dubbed Spirit tonight at about 8:35 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST).
The target: Gusev Crater -- a possible former lake in a giant impact
crater on Mars. Primary among the mission's scientific goals is to
search for and characterize a wide range of rocks and soils that hold
clues to past water activity on Mars
