Video of Jobs introducing the Macintosh
in 1984
02/01/2005 09:26 PMThe Apple Macintosh turns 21 years old today and as a birthday
present, the long-lost video of its introduction by Steve Jobs has
been posted to the web by TextLab
on their
weblog:
Fear not, faithful Mac believers. We have found it. We
have found what seems to be the only copy of a public TV broadcast on
that very day. It was recorded and preserved by Scott Knaster, the
"legendary Mac hacker", as Amazon puts it. Scott kept the tape
(a NTSC Betamax III longplay) for 21 years since he keeps everything.
Andy Hertzfeld saw it when he wrote the story "The Times They Are A-Changin'" on
folklore.org. From there we followed the hints, and that's how we
found it.
We worked with Scott to convert it from NTSC to PAL,
we've polished it, cleaned it, huged it and digitzed it. Here it is.
It goes back to the people who've made the Macintosh, and to the
world. The complete material of about 2 hours is returned to Scott,
Andy and the folklore.org
people, and this weblog will report the story of the "missing 1984
video" in detail. We'll release other clips in the coming days, so
bookmark and check back.
That page is super slow right now, so I've compiled a few links to
the video (QuickTime, 20.9 MB). Enjoy:

20 years of the Macintosh
20 years of the Macintosh
12/09/2003 08:41 PMIn 1984, Apple released one of the most expensive and effective
commercials of all time during the SuperBowl. This commercial
introduced the Macintosh, a revolutionary new concept in personal
computing, to the world. In January of next year, the Macintosh will
celebrate its 20th anniversary, and it is probable Apple will do
something spectacular to celebrate this impressive milestone.

TidBITS Anniversary: Looking Back over
15 Macintosh Years
04/18/2005 06:45 PMAdam C. Engst (~4180 words)
This week marks our 15th anniversary of
TidBITS, and although we remain somewhat astonished that we've
maintained a weekly publication schedule through so many years, the
evidence that we've done so is incontrovertible. In many ways, the
world has changed around us; back in 1990, could anyone have
anticipated what it would be like to use Mac OS X on a dual 2.5 GHz
Power Mac G5 or 17-inch PowerBook G4? But although TidBITS has evolved
to accommodate such changes, we've also stayed true to our core
mission of attempting to bring clarity and understanding to the
Macintosh community. Both evolution and the avoidance of unnecessary
change remain ongoing tasks, and I'm sure we'll be walking that fine
line for years to come. After all, we're only at issue #776, leaving
us 224 more weeks (about four and a half years) before we're forced to
face up to our 1992 decision to use a three-digit numbering
scheme!

Dr. Hardware 2004 Build 5.5.0e
08/02/2004 01:57 PMDr. Hardwares tradition of precise computer analysis is going to be
continued under Windows 95, 98, NT4 and 2000 now. Against other system
information tools that are operating under Windows Dr. Hardware gets
its results not only by inquiring registry settings but also partially
through BIOS calls, I/O port accesses and register manipulation what
is sometimes a difficult job under Windows. As a result of that you
get what can be detected independent of the operating system. The
major advantage of this concept is that Dr. Hardware provides very
good analyzing results in cases where - for example - a component has
not been correctly installed or when Windows is running in safe mode.
Another true strength of this program is its high relevance. We
implement detection algorithms for new processors or chipsets one day
before releasing it - if necessary. Furthermore the detailed
description of all components and the in-depth-analysis of more
sophisticated stuff make Dr. Hardware to one of the most remarkable
programs of its sort. Last but not least we have made great efforts to
keep this program as compact and easy-to-use as possible. You will
find that its a real power tool and a good friend of your machine.

May hardware sales see Apple as big
winner
06/24/2005 07:36 PMCredit Suisse First Boston reiterated a "market weight" rating on the
PC hardware industry after The NPD Group released May retail and
distribution data for the United States, reports Forbes. The month
represented the first material slowdown for PC shipments in over a
year with a 6% year-over-year growth, with notebook sales increasing
and desktop sales falling.
"From a vendor perspective, Apple Computer was the big winner, growing
units 79% year-over-year overall and 94% year-over-year in standalone
retail," the research firm said.
"The strength in retail year to date has been somewhat unexpected to
us given the consumer strength over the past two years, along with
slowing macro economic trends. However, it is important not to
overanalyze NPD's shipment information, as this is not the first time
units have slowed before immediately recovering--October 2003--in the
following month."
