What Our Web Searches Say about Us

Over two-thirds of those polled by Harris Interactive and MSN feel Web searches are the fastest way to find information, though what they are searching for varies widely. Whether because of curiosity, boredom or perhaps the need to find someone from one's past, many people use search engines to find out about the activities and whereabouts of friends, family and ex-boyfriends or girlfriends (the practice is widespread enough that it has acquired a name — "googling" someone — though the sponsor of the survey, MSN, probably hopes to change that with its recently revamped search engine). The most popular person-search of all, however, is users looking up themselves.

You know you just cannot get away from that EgoBot thing ;-)). This will be added to a number of my speeches available from Internet Speaker.

Google URL Searches

Google URL Searches 09/07/2004 10:24 AM

Here's a handy trick with Google: "inurl" searches. You can search for a text string in just the URLs of Google's index.

For instance, I wanted to know what content management system a certain site used. All of the site's URLs had the same patten ("/cgi-bin/b7/..."). This search in Google...

inurl:cgi-bin/b7/

...produced a list of pages with this same URL pattern. From there, it wasn't hard to find one that referenced their platform: Bazaar< /a>.

Handy.

"I'm Brian and so's my wife"

"I'm Brian and so's my wife" 03/06/2004 02:02 AM

I'm subscribed to a whole bunch of mailing lists, mostly as a lurker as I have a hard enough time just keeping up with some of them. One of those lists is Bugtraq, which is pretty much required reading for anyone with sysadmin responsibilities for a server connected to the public internet. Bugtraq is the central hub of the "public disclosure" security community and is actually surprisingly low traffic with only twenty or so messages a day. It's fascinating to watch the latest exploits for all manner of popular software packages tick by on an hourly basis.

Last week, someone posted to the list asking if anyone knew of a contact address for the security team at Bank of America. Today, they posted a follow-up which included the following gem:

I'd also like to thank the 0-day social engineers for their variety of approaches used to attempt to gain access to this exploit. We received responses ranging from fraudulent "Bank of America" employees to phone calls from people claiming to be from Bank of America's IT Security. (One caller claimed to be from Bank of America's IT Security but didn't know what PGP is and then said he couldn't give his PGP key due to security restrictions. And when we asked him to provide information so we could verify the contact, he said he would call back but never did. To this caller: Yes, your social engineering failed and your caller-id spoofing was almost perfect. Emphasis on "almost".)

For some reason, I'm reminded of a classic scene from Monty Python's Life of Brian.

Brian Eno's next big thing?! Politics, it appears. Brian Eno, an outspoken opponent of Tony Blair's administration in Britain, has started up http://www.libdemthistime.org, encouraging prominent Brits to show their support for the Liberal Democrats. If that isn't enough, he's helping bankroll the father of a British soldier killed in Iraq to run against Tony Blair in his constituency, in the hope of unseating him. Could Labour win and Tony lose?

Brian Dear's bl0g reprinted in the San

Brian Dear's bl0g reprinted in the San
Diego Reader
06/08/2004 04:26 AM
Blogger Brian Dear has landed a sweet deal to have a month's worth of his blog posts reprinted as a cover story in the San Diego Reader -- he even got some sweet cash in the deal. He's blogged the story of his deal:
My first thought: scam. I mean, who is this guy? Why is he writing to me, right out of the blue? I don't know him from Adam. And, if this guy is from the Reader, then why was he using what appeared to be a personal email address (not sdreader.com)? So, I looked up the phone number for the San Diego Reader and called.

I asked for Jim Holman. The receptionist wanted to know what this was regarding. I told her I just a moment ago got this email from Mr. Holman saying he wanted to pay me for an article and I am calling to see if this is for real. She put me on hold and then sure enough, I was talking with Jim Holman.
