12/03/2003 05:18 AM One thing that was missing from my newly migrated desktop is a big
escape key. No, not the little Esc key on the keyboard. One bigger
than that. A mind-rotting time waster that truly allows you to escape
for a bit. On my Red Hat desktop, freecell was the big escape key. Now
that I'm running Mandrake, I've found a new one. It's called
"Frozen-Bubble."

What happens when you 1) were thinking about stupid songs that you
can't get out of your head, 2) are listening to the audio of Jimmy
Wales talking about Wikipedia in Boston (audio and text
transcripts here), 3) are chatting to wikipedians on IRC and 4)
happen to have Garage Band open? This (800K mp3 / 870K ogg).
PS I would like to add that many wikipedians contributed links,
sounds and feedback in the creation of this piece. It's amazing what
you can do as a community. ;-P Just kidding, I can not take credit for
the entire work, but I have no one to blame but myself.
UPDATE: Eric Haller just
cleaned it up for me and now it sounds much better. 963K mp3

Wiki as MOO
01/07/2004 04:39 PM
Wiki is a MOO. A wiki page is a MOO room. WikiWords are
doors. Some
changes to a wiki page are like conversations within a room, others
are like writings
on the wall or part of the room's description.
Is it helpful to divide a wiki page into two sections (i.e.
moderated top half and
unmoderated bottom half)? What about using passage of time to
distinguish conversations
from yesterday and today. Will a calendar on a side like
blogs help? At
least sense of time seem more intuitive than versions.

An actually useful wiki
An actually useful wiki
08/29/2004 03:53 PMMerlin showed me Instiki and it
looks great, works intuitively (using various text plugins instead of
just typical wiki stuff), and the desktop Mac OS X one is the easiest
to install wiki I've used. You download the disk image, double-click,
and it's running locally, accessible from the menu bar at all
times.
Last week I got into the habit of launching it and using it instead
of having a BBEdit todo.txt file on my desktop. As a private
scratchpad, it's absolutely fantastic. Over the past few days I've
built out my ToDos into a pile of organized, hyperlinked pages that
are useful to have around.
Now I wish I could mark some stuff as non-private/local and have it
upstream to a public web server to share with others (like a "hey
friends, check out these ideas for an upcoming trip" list I might have
sitting here).

How to run a wiki
02/10/2004 10:32 PMSam
Ruby had a wonderful talk about the lessons learned from the
Atom
Wiki. He formulated something I would like to nominate as the
"Ruby's Law":
- In any project, for any given number of opinions of
the technical questions, there is a larger number of opinions on how
the project should be named – or on the process how name should be
chosen.
It's so true.
There was also a highly interesting discussion afterwards about Wiki
visualization and navigation, which in my opinion are the questions we
should focus on, rather than thinking about issues with
WikiMarkup?
transferability. Wikis would allow wonderful navigational tools - I
know JSPWiki instances where the CSS for the site is available as a
WikiPage?,
allowing anyone to change the visual look of the site. But why not
also extend the same concept to the physical HTML layout of the site?
Of course, you might want to limit it to only certain people, as
recovering from WikiTrolls?
would be nigh impossible, but still... The power of the Wikis lies in
the separation of content and presentation: in fact, the JSPWiki
internals are looking more and more like a database engine day by day,
and some people are seriously suggesting
a SQL-like query language embeddedable in the pages. So,
we can do all this wonderful stuff with the content - but we still
have to resort to editing HTML if we want to change the presentation.
Why?
