Spamming Referer Logs
Spamming Referer Logs
01/04/2004 12:03 PMSpammers have sunk to a new low: spamming HTTP referer logs. Now
that a lot of bloggers display referrer hits, and a lot of bloggers
monitor them to see where they're getting links from, spammers have
started sending HTTP requests with their site as the referer, just to
get people to follow the links out of curiosity.
Doc Searls noted this
phenomenon with Joe Leiberman's comapaign site. The URL
"http://www.joe2004.com?starprose" appeared in his referer logs.
Since Doc has no link from Leiberman's campaign site, and the lone
querystrign arguments indicates that someone is trying to track a
clickthrough, it seems that this was inserted there just so a
webmaster would follow the link. Looking through my logs, I have this
referer too.
Also, just like Doc, I have a referer in my logs to a blog solely
about the Paris Hilton sex video. Needless to say, there is no link
on that site to Gadgetopia. And here's one to a porn site in Germany.
And, yes, I followed both these links because I was trying to figure
out why, how, and in what context they linked to my site.
I don't know if I'm more irritated that spammers are pushing their
way into every last piece of Internet life, or if I'm more irritated
that I fell for it. Before I saw the think on Doc's site and put two
and two together, I was blitely following these refer links, trying to
figure them out. Score one for the spammers, I suppose.

Lieberman Referer Spam

Campaign Referer Spamming? So Says Me Via Doc Searls I originally
sent this item to Doc because I don't blog about national things
anymore and didn't have a place to write it up. Of course, today I
remember MeFi.
As Doc passes along, the following appeared in my referer logs
yesterday:
aca3cc09.ipt.aol.com - - [02/Jan/2004:18:50:27 -0800] "HEAD /
HTTP/1.1" 200 0 "http://joe2004.com/?starprose"
"StarProse Referrer Advertising System 2004"
Of course, Lieberman's joe2004.com website has no links to my weblog,
and obviously, given the user-agent, it's StarProse's business to spam
via false referers. I suspect it's targeting weblogs, since many
include scripts which display recent referers. Since I don't have any
such publicly-accessible referer list, it was only by chance that I
happened to spot it at all.
There is no way to know for certain, barring comment from the
Lieberman camp, if this is their campaign or some random Lieberman
supporter engaging in this practice. But it's slime regardless of the
responsible party.
Anyone spot any other presidential campaigns hijacking people's
referer logs to advertise?

HTTP Referer Protection via Firewall
HTTP Referer Protection via Firewall
09/06/2004 11:15 PMOutpost Firewall:
This personal firewall blocks outgoing HTTP referrers, which we've discussed before as being a potential security hole.
Webmasters just see this in their referrer logs:
Field blocked by Outpost
(http://www.agnitum.com)
It must have to parse the text of the HTTP request and manually
modify the line which includes the HTTP
Referer header. Interesting.
Is this common for firewalls? This is the only "hacked" referrer I
remember seeing in my logs.

Weird-o SMS behaviour
02/05/2005 09:13 PMOuti sent me yesterday a sweet text message about mice. True to the
nature of these beasts, that SMS started multiplying: for some reason,
T-Mobile (yes, I'm in Germany) has decided to deliver that message to
me eleven times within the past 24 hours. Even though it has been
sent only once.
It seems that every SMS sent from Finland is replaced by this same

you had anything to say (or just email me).

The Weird Als of Finland
The Weird Als of Finland
06/30/2004 06:07 PM
Finland has a dance called the humppa, but it's spoken of with the
same disdain that disco gets in the US these days. It's for the
geezers. I have been told it is something like the German polka only
without the lederhosen, which is good since I'm half German and, after
a few Straßenfests where people jump around in lederhosen with
buckets of beer in their hands barely able to stand up, much less
dance, the costumes just don't really add much to the overall
aesthetic. I had a biology professor, a Bavarian who was really into
opera singing, show up for a lecture in lederhosen and dance a polka
for us while we sat there speechless. Everyone thought he was nuts,
but I just thought he was hopelessly homesick and I couldn't imagine
him doing that dance without the full costume in his usually
disheveled professor uniform. I have been spared, so far, the
spectacle of drunk Finns hopping around much like drunk Germans to
goofy music. So far.
While we were off at the lake for Juhannus, my ear picked up
something that sounded a lot like Viva Las Vegas but....not. I
was informed that it was a group called Eläkeläiset [the
pensioners] who are the humppa song gods in Finland and, well,
everywhere else people like to humppa. I fried a few neurons just
thinking about an Elvis tune done in humpaa/polka time. I can't
describe their music except to say that they are the Weird Al
Yankovics of Finland. Sample the Peljätty Humppa [2.2mb] and try to guess the song they are
covering and be very, very afraid. It's like Ethyl Merman singing a
disco version of No
Business like Show Business [yes, she really did...], as it's
so bad that it transcends the badness and is irresistibly brilliant. I
must have more of their music. The guys actually have a regular band,
Kumikameli, but I can't
really tell the difference between the samples on that web site and
the humppa music so it may be just a nuance only a Finn can hear. :)
The lyrics are
very clever and, unsurprisingly, the music is popular with the
polka loving Germans. There even seems to be an OpenBSD-Humppa
connection which does help explain a few things about OpenBSD. Weird
Al has done a polka album so perhaps it is time he teamed up with
Eläkeläiset and did a humppa album. Disturbing thought. *zot* There
went another neuron.

are no weird-o commenters attracted on this blog, even though this is
relatively popular for a Finnish blog (something like 800-1000 page
views a day, not including RSS aggregators). Four possible reasons
come to mind:
- I am male (most weird-o commenters seem to haunt young women)
- I am boring (technobabble, not too radical opinions, and little
personal life; not much to mock me about)
- I publish the internet address of every single commenter, so you
can't be anonymous to the general public (go to Recen
tChanges, then click on the "Main_comments_XXX" entry,
then "More Info..." to find this information). Transparency
rules.

Now Google May Have Lost The Froogle
Name Too...
07/23/2004 06:30 PMIt appears that Google has been having an awful lot of trouble lately
with the names of its services and trademark issues. There was the
company in the UK that
complai
ned they were using Gmail already when Google's Gmail came out.
Then, there was the whole
attack
of the alien Googles thing earlier this month. Now, it turns out
they have
lost an
attempt to take away the domain name Froogles from a guy who runs
a shopping site there (which I imagine just had its traffic shoot
through the roof, for all he complains about how troublesome this
lawsuit is). Of course, Google runs a shopping site called Froogle.
However, in this case, the challenge was whether or not the name
Froogles was confusingly similar to Google (not Froogle). There's a
pretty good reason for this. Froogles went online well before Froogle
did, so if anyone has a claim it might be in the other direction. The
fact that Froogles was not found to be confusingly similar to Google
could open up the possibility of a reverse case where the owner
of Froogles could claim that Froogle violates his own trademark. Yes,
the lawyers are drooling. Of course, the most likely solution is that
Google will end up paying off this guy and just buying the Froogles
domain name to avoid all these other problems. In the meantime, it's
a bit amusing that a Google search on Froogles doesn't have the
Froogles.com site anywhere near the top (however, before the
conspiracy theories start, Yahoo's search doesn't either).
