Dan Gilmore: For several days last week, the cavernous convention halls here became battlefields in the copyright wars. On balance, the entertainment cartel didn't seem to be doing very well. The iTrip is a cool iPod add-on. I should have...

Sunday Morning Conversation

Sunday Morning Conversation 06/17/2005 07:16 PM

Kailee’s on Runescape this morning, exasperated at an offline friend’s actions online. A few days ago, she told me about her Runescape boyfriend. Seems she was talking to someone in the game, and he asked if he could be her “bf.” She thought that meant “best friend,” so she said sure. Only when he dumped her did she find out that “bf” means “boyfriend.” She took it pretty well, though, considering she didn’t know she was dating him to begin with.

Today, however, she’s frustrated. She’s on Runescape chatting with a friend who lives a few blocks away. Apparently the friend has Kailee’s login and password (red flag!) and has been logging in as Kailee now and then. At some point, the friend was on as Kailee when the ex-bf came back and wanted to be her bf again, so the friend said sure, not realizing Kailee didn’t care. Now, though, the friend is upset that Kailee has a bf and she doesn’t, even though Kailee doesn’t want a bf and the friend is the one that said “sure” in the first place. Even worse, she won’t interact with Kailee on Runescape because she thinks Kailee is “on a date.”

I asked Kailee if she knows the friend’s login and password, and her response was, “One of them.” I don’t know why I expected the answer to be “yes” or “no” in this day and age, but I did. She went on to say that the friend has several accounts, and it’s just too hard to remember them all.

Some interesting life lessons going on here, but the scariest part is how freely Millennials trade identities without a care in the world. We’ve repeatedly told Brent not to give his Runescape password to his friends, but they all know each others’ accounts and log in as someone else. It must make for interesting conversations when you don’t know what you might have said before.

Time for another family meeting….

Sunday night / Monday morning

Scripting News brunch

Scripting News brunch 02/07/2005 02:06 AM

It was a very nice meetup, one of the best ever.

I attribute the success to six factors:

1. Manageable group size, exactly 10 people were there.

2. Private room, easy to hear everyone, even if they were sitting at the other end of the table.

3. During daylight hours, everyone was awake.

4. Buffet style eating, means not too many interruptions from wait staff.

5. Very reasonable price and great food.

6. Great people!!!

A Little Spam With Your Weekend Brunch?

A Little Spam With Your Weekend Brunch? 08/10/2004 06:55 AM
At some point, when you're getting so much spam, it's really pretty difficult to tell if spammers favor a certain hour or certain day, but apparently one anti-spam company has gotten down in the muck to figure out that spammers seem to prefer the weekend brunch time slot for sending their spam. That's right, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2pm is the time when you're likely to be getting the most spam -- except that anti-spam filters are now learning to adjust their filters based on time. So, messages sent out during those lazy weekends may be getting extra scrutiny from your favorite spam filter. Of course, these days, it seems like some spammers just keep churning out messages all day, every day, so I'm not sure how important a factor time of day really is in picking out the spam.

Sunday fiddling

Sunday fiddling 01/25/2004 04:12 PM
For years now, the megnut design hasn't been working quite right and you've probably noticed that sometimes the footer graphic comes up and overlaps the content whenever the left-hand side has less than the right-hand side. Well, hopefully it's a problem no more! I've spent the afternoon tweaking the style sheet and it should be fixed. Of course, this hasn't been tested on anything but my browser (Camino on OS X) so please let me know if it's all messed up now. Hopefully it isn't. Of course, there are a million other little things to change around: archive styles and URLs, legacy code, unused junk, and all that. But that will all wait for another day. Today it's just the layout. Baby steps, baby steps.

The Sunday List

The Sunday List 04/09/2004 04:09 PM
To honor the best Finnish blog of 2003, here's my Sunday List:

  • Nights slept at home : 0 (coming home at 7 am does not count as night)
  • Hours slept in a bus: 3
  • Movies: 1 (Kopps)
  • Sauna: 1 (But twice, mmm...)
  • Weird "slap together whatever we can find in the cupboard and wok them" -dinners: 1
  • Eaten hamburgers: 1 (Sorry everyone, I still do eat them on occasion. Sorry to burst your bubble.)
  • Things never done before : 4 (Good weekend)
  • Things never done in public before : 1 (Good, but strange weekend)
  • New whiskies tasted: 1. (A simply gorgeous and rich Glenfiddich 21 years old Havana Reserve. One of the best I've ever tasted.)
  • New people met: countless
  • Number of hours spent reading the Pinseri Top-200: 7
  • Anonymous comments posted on blogs to feed the general discussion on the awards: 27 (Ha, you can't check, now can you? ;-)
  • Non-anonymous comments posted: 3
  • Number of meters: 47

And the best - hands down - Kuukkeli discussion thread is running on Kalamuki (Finnish only). *grin*

Morning after

Morning after 12/24/2004 12:25 PM

This morning Andi and I attended the holiday program at the elementary school that my older boys Alex(8) and Linus(6) attend. We were quite proud parents as Alex got a "Going the Extra Mile" award for academic achievement. Nice to get out of the office/house. I need a break, but I'm not going to get it just yet. The week between XMAS and New Years is going to be devoted to writing.

I spent the rest of the morning responding to emails about the Roller 1.0 roll-out at blogs.sun.com. There were a number of glitches and some have been filed as bugs to be fixed for Roller 1.0. Some were caused by browser caching issues as we saw on JRoller earlier this year. There are lots of questions about themes and page templates. A number of folks are inspired by new release and are working up cool new themes. I'll have to point some of those out in later post. In the next couple of weeks, I hope to whip up some new themes myself and write a short tutorial for folks just getting started.

Since I had to delete an irritating comment today, I'll fill you in on my comment policy. If your comment irritates or offends me in any way whatsoever, I will take great joy in deleting it.

New Bluetooth Crack

New Bluetooth Crack 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

Happy Friday:

Cryptographers have discovered a way to hack Bluetooth-enabled devices even when security features are switched on. The discovery may make it even easier for hackers to eavesdrop on conversations and charge their own calls to someone else's cellphone.

"Our attack makes it possible to crack every communication between two Bluetooth devices, and not only if it is the first communication between those devices," says Shaked.

Check out the time required to pull this off:

They show that once an attacker has forced two devices to pair, they can work out the link key in just 0.06 seconds on a Pentium IV-enabled computer, and 0.3 seconds on a Pentium-III. "This is not just a theoretical break, it's practical," says Schneier.

04/06/2005 09:10 AM

ZDNet UK is reporting that British Telecom's 'Bluephone' is almost ready to launch. The project aims to create a hybrid Bluetooth/GSM phone that can make calls using a landline when at home (using Bluetooth for cordless connection) but can make cellular calls when out of the house. Useful, perhaps, but not too useful—it's likely calls won't be able to seamlessly transfer from network to network.

BT has also announced the development of a newer version of the Bluephone that supports Wi-Fi, with a WiMax version possibly to launch even further down the line.

Kensington Optical Elite

Kensington Optical Elite 03/11/2003 09:44 AM
The other day I asked what’s the best optical mouse, and I got a bunch of comments.

So... what did I end up with?

Here’s how the decision process went.

1. The feedback I got suggested there are three great mouse makers: Kensington, Microsoft, and Logitech.

2. My instinct is as always to support the little guy, so Microsoft was provisionally eliminated as a choice.

3. Then the feedback I got, and the research I did, suggested that Kensington has better Mac OS X software and support than Logitech. So I chose Kensington.

4. Then—how to choose a specific mouse? I wanted one in the $20 - $50 range that had at least two buttons and a scroll wheel. It had to be optical, of course (that was the whole point). Trackpads not allowed. And, of course, it had to not be completely ugly. (Hyper-concern with aesthetics is the mark of a good Mac user.)

This left just a few mice to choose from. I chose the Kensington Optical Elite.

There were some runners-up—the PocketMouse Pro, for instance.

But I’ve been totally happy with the Optical Elite.
