Apple II: the Apple Store is amazing

Apple II: the Apple Store is amazing 01/07/2004 02:43 PM

So after my parents saw the iMovie I made on the Mac, I was able to convince my Dad to return the Dell he had just bought my Mom, and buy an iMac instead. On Christmas, then, I went to the Apple Store site, and in 5 minutes was able to buy an iMac. On Saturday (two days later), the computer arrived.

So months after wondering what this integrated "Rip, Mix, Burn" technology in OS X is all about, I finally got around to making a movie -- Mr. Willem's First Christmas. It was astonishingly easy to make. It took a couple hours of shooting with a Sony DV Cam, and then a couple hours editing. Sound directly integrates with iTunes. Photos directly integrate with iPhoto. And the result directly integrates with iDVD. All that's missing is a simple way to integrate Creative Commons licenses, the way, e.g., MT does, and Adobe will (as announced at our party, at which the latest cool Flash! was shown as well).

The Chicago Apple Store

The Chicago Apple Store 06/25/2004 08:32 PM

I'm writing this from the second floor of the Apple store on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. We spent the day with the guys from 37 Signals at The Building of Basecamp Workshop. I'm on a little iMac, and I have to admit it's impressive....the store, I mean.

Everything is clear lucite, bleached wood, and concrete. Even the stairs are translucent plastic of some kind. I gotta say — Apple has a thing for style. There's a forty seat movie theater up here, but I have no idea what it's for.

I just called Rob and left him a message that I was standing in his own, personal Nirvana. I better get out of here, actually, because some of these machines are looking really nice (but how do you live without a scroll wheel?!).

The iMac I'm on has a little camera on top of it, and it's displaying real-time video of me, but I can't figure out how to get it to take a picture. You'll just have to take my word for it that I'm actually here.

Joe and I have a pizza waiting for us at the Pizzar ia Uno on Ontario and Ohio. Gotta run.

As is my usual response to an Apple product launch, I was initially underwhelmed, but have started to warm to some of the ancillary changes (the primary change being the new iPod mini-like Click Wheel), like the one-click Shuffle Songs menu option and the extended battery life. And while that's well and good, since I don't plan on upgrading for the time being (my iPod is still in the shop, but will come back shiny and new, god willing), what I really want to know is if we'll be seeing these changes to the 3rd generation iPods and iPod mini through a firmware update. (Thanks, everybody!)
