Apple's latest, Garageband is a music editing tool. The tool offers some (royalty) free music, and the ability to publish the creativity you produce. CC-less, so far.

Loving iLife 03/06/2004 01:55 AM
Reviewing iLife ’04, Matthew Fordahl writes for Associated Press, “For me, the suite would be a bargain even at twice the price. Its newest addition is an addictive music-creation program. Called GarageBand, it is simple enough for those of us who’ve never touched a keyboard or strummed a guitar yet advanced enough to appeal to a polished practitioner.” [Mar 1]

Review: iLife ’04

Review: iLife ’04 01/16/2004 11:02 AM
Assessing iLife ’04, David Pogue writes in the New York Times, “Each program in the updated suite (except iTunes) offers about a dozen enhancements. For example, the new iMovie offers video trimming with an ‘undo’ feature right in the storyboard strip. The iDVD program introduces 20 new professional-looking templates for your DVD menu screens, and can now fit two hours of amazing-looking video onto a disc. For iPhoto 4, the chief improvement is speed, enough to handle 25,000 photos per collection without bogging down. But iLife ’04 (for the Mac OS X operating system) also includes a new program called GarageBand. It’s designed to let people with even the feeblest musical talent, or even musical interest, create professional-sounding digital recordings.” [Jan 15]

Xamlon

Xamlon 03/31/2005 08:01 PM

OK - so here's another scripting dev language called Xamlon that's designed for RIAs (rich internet apps.)

This one has it's own unique twist - it uses Microsoft upcoming XAML system -f or generating the UI - but since there's no such thing as Avalon or Longhorn yet - this package outputs into .swf - for those who can't wait.

This is a similar approach that Laszlo has. It's shipping today as a kickass RIA dev environment for .swf - but will be spitting out XAML/Avalon/Longhorn stuff - when it's time as come.

So where does that leave Macromedia?

They've developed an enterprise sales force now - scamming people on their Breeze product) grossly over charging them (IMHO) so now they've got an add-on dev tool called Flex (cold-stoned stolen from Laszlo) which (I'm sure) they're selling as a way for folks to build their own add-on's onto Breeze. Flex starts at $12k a server.

One thing they're not telling anybody about - are the secret backdoor hookss they've got in Flash - and they're the only ones who can use it.

More and more Macromedia is defining the slimeball old school company that we all love to hate. Go Rob and Norm - go.

So right on to Xamlon - I'm sure Scoble will like it.

Xamlon: XAML for .NET 1.1

Xamlon: XAML for .NET 1.1 01/07/2004 02:33 PM

A former colleague/collaborator, Paul Colton, has just released a new product called Xamlon, which provides a simple XAML implementation on top of .NET 1.1 and the Windows Forms framework.  For those not familiar with Paul, he founded LiveSoftware, and created JRun, the first commercial Java Servlet engine -- he and his team went on to invent what became JSP and JSP Tag Libraries (what they called Dynamic Taglets), and CF_Anywhere, a CFML processor on top of their Java Tag framework.  Paul left Allaire after we acquired LiveSoftware, and has been playing around with a lot of ideas, but this one seems pretty cool!

XAML is the new XML-based user interface programming language that will be part of the Windows Longhorn release in 2006.  Paul clearly liked XAML and thought that developers would be interested in developing with it (albeit much smaller/simpler in scale and richness) today.  This will be an interesting project to track.
