Object Management Group™ (OMG™)
http://www.omg.org/

Founded in April 1989 by eleven companies, the Object Management Group™ (OMG™) began independent operations as a not-for-profit corporation. Through the OMG's commitment to developing technically excellent, commercially viable and vendor independent specifications for the software industry, the consortium now includes approximately 800 members. The OMG is moving forward in establishing the Model Driven Architecture ™ as the "Architecture of Choice for a Connected World" ™ through its worldwide standard specifications including CORBA ®, CORBA/IIOP™, the UML™, XMI™, MOF™, Object Services, Internet Facilities and Domain Interface specifications. The OMG is headquartered in Needham, MA, USA with a subsidiary in Japan. The OMG has international marketing offices in Bahrain, Brazil, Germany, India and the UK, along with a government representative in Washington, D.C.

The OMG was formed to create a component-based software marketplace by accelerating the introduction of standardized object software. The organization's charter includes the establishment of industry guidelines and detailed object management specifications to provide a common framework for application development. Conformance to these specifications will make it possible to develop a heterogeneous computing environment across all major hardware platforms and operating systems. Implementations of OMG specifications can be found on many operating systems across the world today.

The OMG's series of specifications detail the necessary standard interfaces for Distributed Object Computing. Its widely popular Internet protocol IIOP (Internet Inter-ORB Protocol) is being used as the infrastructure for hundreds of technology companies. OMG specifications are used worldwide to develop and deploy distributed applications for vertical markets, including Manufacturing, Finance, Telecoms, Electronic Commerce, Real-time systems and Health Care.

Canadian M&Ms

Canadian M&Ms 03/24/2005 08:27 PM
Seems that Canadian collector’s are once more in for a treat, and I don’t mean because we’ll be eating more M&M’s in the next month than most people do in a lifetime. Unlike the American equivalents, It looks like we won’t have to go out to find all Seventy-six different packaging variations to get a complete set, at least judging by the lack of a ‘Collect All 76!’ type of message on the bags. Judging by image above that Canadian collector extraordinaire Scott Bradley sent us, our assortment also lacks the foil that makes the American counterpart shiny and desirable, but with the bilingual text and alternate character placement the Canadian M&M’s have their own reasons to shine!

A man and his rocket car. As documentaries enjoy an unprecedented level of popularity and financial success, it's high time that an obscure Canadian National Film Board doc from 1981 was (re)discovered. The story of Ken Carter, who spends several years and millions of dollars of other people's money in the single-minded pursuit of one goal: jumping a jet-powered car across the St. Lawrence River from Canada to the United States. What is it with Canadians and insane dreams?

Canadian Election

Canadian Election 06/09/2004 04:05 AM
Canada is having a general federal election on June 28, 2004. This article is a brief synopsis of the election, the election issues, and the Canadian political systems, aimed mostly at non-Canadians. People from other British or British-derived countries should find much of the introductory section ("The System") boring, as most British Parliamentary systems tend to work about the same.

It's cooler to be Canadian

It's cooler to be Canadian 03/11/2003 01:59 PM
McPaper, of all places, has an article about how American travelers in Europe are encountering strong anti-american sentiment. The article has some amazing quotes, like: If the past 100 years were widely considered the American Century, this new one is fast shaping up as the Anti-American Century.... A mother lode of goodwill fostered in the decades after the defeat of Nazi Germany has been reduced to dust in recent years. "Man, it was bad," says the Rat Pack-y star of Swingers. "These girls saw us and were kind of flirting, and they kept asking us if we were American. Finally we said, 'Yes,' and they just took off. " One girl turns and says, 'We were hoping you were Canadian.' Canadian? Since when was it cooler to be Canadian?" I can only hope that more Americans will travel overseas in the near future, so they will understand the price that we are paying for Bush's unilateralism and arrogance. The article concludes with: Tips for blending in Avoid American fast-food restaurants and chains. Keep discussions of politics to private places, not rowdy bars. Take a rain check on wearing clothes featuring American flags or sports team logos. Keep your passport out of sight. Soften your speech; Americans typically overshadow their hosts in the volume department. Via Boing Boing...

New Figures At Canadian Wal-Marts

New Figures At Canadian Wal-Marts 01/22/2004 02:13 AM
Though not new by American standards, Canucks jonesing for some fresh figures need to rush over to their local Wal-Mart stores to find the Achk Med-Beq wave. Unlike past assortments, which have sported tri-logo stickers, these figures are shipping on regular American cards. There is no word yet on what sort of quantities have shipped, but it is likely that regular Canadian ordering procedures were followed, leaving very little to go around and little chance of a reorder... then again, with the figures shipping on standard cards, we may see a change in the ongoing figure drought here.

Possible Canadian Card Variations?

Possible Canadian Card Variations? 03/28/2005 04:11 PM
As an odd twist, it appears that Canadian collectors may find a series of card variations with the new ROTS figures. Historically, Canadian toys rarely see any variations even when they are appropriate, and when a variation is discovered it is usually in super low numbers. In terms of percentages, some Canadian variations are produced in single digits, making production of them in the very low thousands. That being said, Canadian collectors will have to scan the isles with an eagle eye, as it appears that some figures are showing up with the ‘action stickers’ on the blisters. At this time it is uncertain if the figures in question will continue to have the stickers throughout their entire run. Thanks goes to Rebelscum reader Brian for the images.

A Canadian Test Of Will -- Against
Spammers

A Canadian Test Of Will -- Against
Spammers
06/02/2004 03:25 PM
While some countries handle their computer problems by enacting harsh laws, those laws are ultimately ineffective because enforcement is an afterthought. Creating a new law is made a priority because politicians can point to the law say that they "did something" -- regardless of whether or not the law is enforceable. But Canadians have a reputation for being a bit more even-handed and friendly. So what do they propose? They admit that most of what would get put into a new anti-spam law is already contained in existing laws, and so they want to focus on the enforcement of current laws against more general behaviors like false advertising. Hopefully Canada can track down spammers and prosecute them, but many problems still exist -- like spammers don't live in Canada, etc. But at least Canadians are trying to focus on the problem in a more rational way.
