Crm4Mac acts like a central repository for your email, contacts, calendars and other types of documents you wish to keep track of, allowing the user to view, add and edit information from one application. Information added or changed in Crm4Mac is stored in Apple's iApps, so it will still be available to you if you decide not to continue using the application. Crm4Mac is currently in public beta testing; downloads are available from the developer's Web site.

First thoughts about Panther: Address
Book...
10/29/2003 12:10 AM

Address Book under OSX has never been a particularly impressive application, but it's just about worked as a system wide piece of kit. Panther brings with it a number of changes and improvements and a couple of nasty unprovements too. There's some functionality here that I can't categorically say wasn't in Jaguar, so bear with me if I foul something up:

  • Every card in Address Book can have a picture associated with it. This is not new. However previously you were just able to pick up a picture and drop it whole onto the hole allocated for it, where it would sit greatly diminished in size and essentially unusable. The version in Panther introduces the lovely resize and crop functionality that's been in iChat AV since the beta. Very nice indeed;
  • The edit functionality now lasts when you change cards which is a good change. Previously editing an card meant entering it individually and clicking on the edit button. Now the edit button will remain depressed until you release it. It's not the UI approach I'd have taken, but it pretty much works;
  • The edit interface itself is a bit of a dog's dinner. The previously understated and probably not very clear grey + and - buttons have now become garishly red and green, the edit screen radically indents everything and moves stuff around to the extent that it's difficult to see what's going on and where your information has been moved to. An approach that highlighted the information rather than the labels might have been better;
  • Also noticed for the first time is the 'send updates' functionality - which I'm sure has been there for ages. It appears to be a way of informing everyone in your address book of any and all changes to your personal address card. I'm interested, but too scared, to see how this might work...

My analog Palm Pilot

My analog Palm Pilot 03/14/2005 04:25 PM

Here's what your back pocket will do to a piece of paper after 6 days hard walking in London:

my analog
Palm Pilot

When I travel, I usually write everything that's super important to me down on a 8.5x11 piece of paper, fold it twice, and stick it in my pocket. That way, when I need to look up a phone number or jot down an address, I don't have to get out a notebook, my computer, or hunt around for a piece of scrap paper. And it won't ever get stolen like a cell phone or handheld might.

Palm Tungsten 3 Update

Palm Tungsten 3 Update 12/11/2003 04:55 PM
PalmOne have released a T3 Update which fixes some SD Card issues and an audio interrupt problem which caused the 400Mhz processor to run at slower speeds -- typically hovering around 260Mhz.

WARNING: Be sure to backup first! Yes, I know you're always told to do a backup before an update, but this time it's for real. The update flashes the ROM, giving all your settings the boot -- and I mean _all_ of them. To be sure you're backing up, open your Palm's HotSync Manager, select Hotsync > Conduit Settings > double-click Backup, check the Backup radio box, and click OK. HotSync. Do the T3 Update per their instructions. Come back to this dialog box and select Restore from backup, then HotSync again to put everything back as it was. You may indeed see some of those old appointments and todos re-appearing if you chose to Save a Copy on the PC when you deleted them somewhere along the line.

Tungsten E2 Official, Reviewed (Verdict:
Nice Palm, So-So PDA)
04/13/2005 08:57 AM

tungsten_e2o.jpgThe PalmOne Tungsten E2 is official and it looks like a pretty decent deal for the price, although its conspicuous lack of Wi-Fi should not be understated. The E2 retains the 320 by 320 pixel display, although PalmOne claims it is "brighter" and "richer," and adds built-in Bluetooth for connectivity. The processor has gotten a bump, too, moving from a 126MHz OMAP to a 200MHz Xscale. Otherwise, it doesn't appear to be that different than the original Tungsten E. The best news is the price, which remains a reasonable $250.
