Four degrees of clarification

Four degrees of clarification 08/27/2004 02:13 PM
Last week I watched (and I hope you got to see) one of the greatest comebacks in sports history during the Men's All-Around Gymnastics competition at the Athens Olympics. American Paul Hamm missed his dismount so badly on the vault that he endangered the judges when he landed, flat on his dignity, in front of them. From leading the competition, he was suddenly thrust into 12th place with only two of six events left. But later he managed to get the two highest marks awarded to any athlete in this competition to eke out first place, the first time in 100 years for an American, by 1/1,000th of a point. Marvelous!

Java LGPL clarification.

Java LGPL clarification. 03/11/2003 09:43 AM

(via Lance) This quote from Free Software Foundation lawyer Eben Moglen seems to clarify the issue of using an LGPL jar in a non-GPL application (such as Roller). As long as the jar is LGPL, rather than GPL, you can include it in your application and then license your application however you choose. Here is the key quote:

Eben Moglen: If the author of the other code had chosen to release his JAR under the Lesser GPL, your contribution to the combined work could be released under any license of your choosing, but by releasing under GPL he or she chose to invoke the principle of "share and share alike."
Some conversations at the last RTP bloggers lunch left some doubt in my mind about LGPL, but the above quote clears it up nicely.

Proposed clarification for RSS 2.0 spec

Proposed clarification for RSS 2.0 spec 06/04/2004 02:12 PM

A big reason behind RSS's wide adoption is its simplicity, but the ambiguity of the RSS 2.0 spec has also led to problems. Case in point: the RSS 2.0 spec states that "entity-encoded HTML is allowed" in the <description> element, which has caused more than a little confusion about how to properly encode < and >. For example, if a feed does not use entity-encoded HTML, how should < and > be encoded so that they're not interpreted as HTML tag brackets by aggregators such as FeedDemon? And if a feed does contain HTML, how should the tag brackets be encoded so an aggregator knows to treat it like HTML? As you can imagine, this ambiguity has led to more than a little hair loss by developers of aggregators who have had to deal with countless badly-encoded feeds.

This issue has come to the surface again due to concerns about silent data loss, resulting in lengthy comment threads (see here and here) featuring the usual suspects.

Behind the scenes, a number of aggregator developers bounced around ideas for a solving this once and for all, and I'm happy to report that this has resulted in a proposed clarification for the RSS 2.0 spec. The proposed clarification states very clearly that "<description> contains entity-encoded HTML."

Of course, this won't magically fix every badly-encoded RSS feed, but it does resolve the ambiguity of the existing spec. It's hoped that this will lead to less guesswork down the road, especially since the proposal comes with a set of examples for properly encoding descriptions.

Clarification: AirWater Stock Scandal 07/12/2004 07:39 AM

A few months back, when giving free publicity drawing your attention to the AirWater corporation's fancy-ass de-humidifiers that extract water from the air, I jokingly (ha ha!) implied that the company provided me stock to shill their product. This was, for those of you that happen to be, for instance, Michael Zwebner, President of the AirWater Corporation, or perhaps an agent of the SEC, a joke. Which is to say, the only thing I've ever been given by the AirWater corporation is angry emails written in all caps and large fonts.

For the record, while we're covering our bases, the editors of The New York Times' Circuits section have not, to my knowledge, yet been diagnosed with any form of mental retardation. Nor do I have concrete evidence that the employees of Gizmondo actually perform sexual acts inside of swine.

Proposed clarification for RSS 2.0 spec
(revised)

Proposed clarification for RSS 2.0 spec
(revised)
06/17/2004 11:31 AM

Two weeks ago I mentioned a proposed clarification for the RSS 2.0 spec, and the proposal has since been revised. While I'm disappointed that the spec couldn't be re-worded to stipulate that the RSS 2.0 <description> element is always entity-encoded HTML, I'm glad that the link to the examples will remain.

Quite often I receive support questions from people asking why specific feeds don't look right in FeedDemon, and more often than not the problem is due to the feed author incorrectly encoding HTML entities. Being able to point to an "official" set of encoding examples will be a big help in these cases.

Reviewing iLife ’04, Matthew Fordahl writes for Associated Press, “For me, the suite would be a bargain even at twice the price. Its newest addition is an addictive music-creation program. Called GarageBand, it is simple enough for those of us who’ve never touched a keyboard or strummed a guitar yet advanced enough to appeal to a polished practitioner.” [Mar 1]

iLife Updates

iLife Updates 04/14/2005 07:09 PM
Apple has updated iDVD to v5.0.1, iMovie HD to v5.0.2, and iPhoto to v5.0.2. These updates are bug-fix releases, recommended for all users, and currently available through Software Update.

Review: iLife ’04

Review: iLife ’04 01/16/2004 11:02 AM
Assessing iLife ’04, David Pogue writes in the New York Times, “Each program in the updated suite (except iTunes) offers about a dozen enhancements. For example, the new iMovie offers video trimming with an ‘undo’ feature right in the storyboard strip. The iDVD program introduces 20 new professional-looking templates for your DVD menu screens, and can now fit two hours of amazing-looking video onto a disc. For iPhoto 4, the chief improvement is speed, enough to handle 25,000 photos per collection without bogging down. But iLife ’04 (for the Mac OS X operating system) also includes a new program called GarageBand. It’s designed to let people with even the feeblest musical talent, or even musical interest, create professional-sounding digital recordings.” [Jan 15]
