Will Intel Steal the Show?
Will Intel Steal the Show?
03/08/2004 11:15 PMIntel's moves in the Wi-Fi market may squeeze out other players in the
market, including access point makers: Intel is moving toward building
chips that can allow a laptop to serve as an AP. Some say if that
becomes standard gear in laptops, it may threaten the vendors that
make standalone access points. I have to agree with some of the
comments in this story that while in some cases it is convenient for a
laptop to serve as an AP, at other times it isn't. I would prefer a
standalone AP in my house because otherwise I'd have to keep my laptop
running all the time. I suspect that laptops with built-in APs will
appeal to a certain market but it won't kill the market for standalone
APs. Intel could also give TiVo a run for its money as it develops
chips for entertainment PCs. TiVo is apparently working to make its
product cheaper and easier to use in anticipation for the
competition....

Why one man
steals music. Either a wonderfully scathing indictment of a music
industry that doesn't care about its customers, or a pathetic attempt
at justifying illegal activities, depending on your perspective.

The Money In Music Downloading Is Still
In Hardware
12/09/2003 01:19 PMAs just about every company finalizes their plans to set up their own
imitation music download store, a new study is suggesting (as has been
said
before), that the real money in downloadable music is for consumer
electronics firms
selling more hardware to play back the music.
The study also found that an awful lot of people really aren't
interested in paying for downloadable music. Of course, I'm still
waiting for someone to go ahead and offer a complete musical package.
That would be a music player that comes complete with a ton of music
already installed - perhaps covering a certain (prolific) artist, or
an entire genre. It could also come with some sort of service that
would let users download new songs in that category as they come out.
Of course, as it stands right now, the recording industry would force
the price to be so high on any such offering that it could never be
done.

09/13/2004 03:06 AMGerman company RapidSolution Software has released the Windows
software Tunebite. Music tracks purchased from the Internet are
copy-protected and involve important restrictions for many users when
they are played back. With the option to re-record them while they are
played, Tunebite legally provides the user with new music files
without restrictions. This ensures that music bought from Apple
iTunes, Sony Connect, AOL or other music platforms in the Internet can
be played back and listened to from everywhere. [PRWEB Sep 13, 2004]

Which Is The Commodity? Hardware Or
Software? Does It Matter?
Which Is The Commodity? Hardware Or
Software? Does It Matter?
01/19/2004 05:05 AMThe NY Times is trying to figure out the dynamics of the
new
new economy. It had become common wisdom over the past few years in
the technology world that hardware was a commodity business - and
unless you were a Dell and could figure out some way to produce the
hardware cheaper, you couldn't make any money. However, along comes
Apple, and they appear to have figured out a way to
make money off of
hardware. They're selling their iPods like crazy - partly due to
the "loss leader" sales of songs from iTunes. In other words, the
digital product (the songs) has become the commodity, while the
hardware is where the margins are. This shouldn't be a surprise
really. For all the talk of commodities, it always comes down to
marketing and perceived value. If you're facing a competitive
situation where prices are always going to get driven down to a
commodity level on an even footing, you need to do whatever you can to
make that footing uneven again. Steve Jobs does this via marketing.
There are plenty of products that are cheaper than the iPod and are
equally functional - but the iPod has been able to keep selling at a
higher price by being better at the little things - increasing its
perceived value, and increasing their ability to keep selling iPods.
It's an understanding of the entire package of what they're selling
that lets them do this. Rather than focusing on how to profit off of
every little piece of the pie, they're focusing on what they know they
can outperform the competition with - and making sure that the rest is
sold at about cost. There's nothing magic about it - it's just good
marketing.
