Safire Takes A Shot At Us

Safire Takes A Shot At Us

Safire Takes A Shot At Us 01/07/2004 02:11 PM

William Safire has managed, by his current lexicographical persona, to obscure the memory that he once sat on the right hand of Richard Nixon. He reminded me of that earlier, less avuncular, Safire this morning. He has an op-ed in today's New York Times that is astonishingly smug and nasty, even for him. In it, he gloats over his perception of a deepening division between the centrist, Clinton-esque wing of Democratic party and what he describes as "The Dean-Internet Party, its Bush-despising base so energized as to be frenetic, its leader happy to be the apostle of anger, its bandwidth bandwagon gaining momentum with each pulse of its cursing cursor." There's more to be said about the political depths of this remark, but it's Christmas eve, and I'm in a charitable mood. Besides, the television vs. Internet, Industrial vs. Virtual, corporate vs. individual nature of this election, is a subject that demands more thorough discussion than I have time for this morning. The most grimly entertaining part of his screed comes at its end. Safire proposes a scenario in which Dean will falter, and, after the Democratic party has been recaptured by the Republicrats, he will leave the party in a sulk, creating conditions for a Bush landslide. Safire worries that a huge Bush mandate, as opposed to his mere reelection, might be bad for the country. Right. We can't afford to lose this one, folks. If we do, we'll have to set our watches back 60 years. If they even let us have watches in the camps, that is....

I'm almost done with my column for blogging.la, then I have to write up bit of Valentine's Day snark, for the cult of the one-eyed cat, so actual weblog-ish things are backing up (good thing I carry around a notebook with me everywhere -- it's actually a Nightmare Before Christmas diary, with a lock and everything, that my friend Martin gave me for Christmas, and the truth is I totally love it.) So in place of anything original and interesting, I direct you to . . . (Don't you RSS readers HATE it when I cut off there? Nyaah.) Update: Oh, okay. I'm sorry. Here's the rest: So in place of anything original and interesting, I direct you to an interview I did with a new site called tv-series.com a few days ago. Okay. Bye. Update Again: Okay, Seriously. Not only did I give you more RSS, I even fixxored the bit that I broke (tip of the propeller cap to jbay for helping out). Don't ever say that I don't ::heart:: RSS readers.

Live-Shot dot com

Live-Shot dot com 01/02/2005 06:57 PM

Talk about colossally bad ideas... Live-Shot makes it possible to kill things with the click of a mouse, all from the comfort of your computer desk.

LIVE-SHOT is similar to a trip to the rifle range with one very notable exception. Everything is done through a computer and the internet.

Right now, all they offer is target shooting, but they hope to make available remote-controlled camera rifles hidden in blinds for mouse jockeys to lie in wait for live game to wander into range. Barbary Sheep, Blackbuck Antelope, wild hog, and other species will be available for shootin' on Live-Shot's Texas ranch. They'll even dress your kill out and have it stuffed & mounted for you. For a price, of course.

Gives a whole new meaning to the term "first person shooter." What's next? Pay-Per-Shot remote control snipers in war zones?

Shot Across Atheros (and Others) Bow

Shot Across Atheros (and Others) Bow 07/19/2004 01:19 PM
This press release sounds obscure, but it's not: you can't call yourself Wi-Fi if your proprietary add-on interferes with Wi-Fi receivers: The Wi-Fi Alliance has taken action on the alleged interference caused by Atheros Super G Turbo mode. Broadcom has stated on many occasions and presented test results that they claim demonstrate that the Turbo mode (which binds two radio channels to produce a gross throughput of 108 Mbps an a net throughput in the mid-30 Mbps) can dramatically drop the speed of nearby Wi-Fi networks running 802.11b or 802.11g flavors. Atheros has consistently denied that those tests reflect reality: they have said their own tests fail to demonstrate this problem. Testing by Tim Higgins of Tom's Networking showed most clearly that Broadcom's equipment was most heavily affected by Atheros's Turbo mode, but only under limited, close-range circumstances. Anecdotally, I've heard more and more stories from home users finding their networks performing erratically, but I have been unable to track down in those cases whether new nearby networks--in apartment buildings or residential neighborhoods--were the culprit, whether Atheros-based or otherwise. The Wi-Fi Alliance had promised months ago to take up this issue, which is a touchy one, given that Atheros and Broadcom are both members, and that most chipmakers and consumer manufacturers are deploying a range of proprietary and/or pre-standards extensions to Wi-Fi. Starting today, if any extension impairs other Wi-Fi devices, the alliance can use its trademark control to pull its branding. The alliance's director, Frank Hanzlik, says in this press release, "If a product extension significantly impacts the ability of other Wi-Fi CERTIFIED equipment to operate as intended, the Alliance may withhold or revoke certification." Interestingly, more devices are heading to market without the Wi-Fi stamp, and with this latest tool, it might mean that Wi-Fi becomes Balkanized--Atheros could opt out and potentially see no problems with that decision. Some of its OEM partners already ship Wi-Fi-trademark-free equipment....

Well if Wieden+Kennedy isn't already working on it, they surely will be shortly.
