Macworld review: Final Cut Express 2 04/21/2004 02:11 AM
Software companies nearly always build new versions of software on top of old versions, a practice similar to the way you'd add a second story to a too-small house. But in Final Cut Express 2.0's case, Apple moved to a completely new neighborhood, scrapping Final Cut Express 1.0 and basing its successor on Final Cut Pro 4, which included performance and audio-related improvements, as well as real-time effects previews. Now intermediate DV enthusiasts will benefit directly from these great new features and pay less than a third of Final Cut Pro's price.

Managing a Music Collection Using Visual
Basic Express and SQL Server Express

A problem that afflicts me (and I've noticed many of my brethren) is the need to create a program to solve a task when there are already many perfectly suitable programs on the market for free or for very little cash. The standard justification in my mind is that there isn't a program that does things the exact way I want them to. Now realistically, I tend to pick on programs that are within reach. After all, even if Word didn't suit my needs, I have no intention of writing my own word processing program from scratch. (Although at times, I keep thinking I could build a better version of Outlook ... yet I digress).

Introducing UseModWiki 04/04/2005 10:55 AM
Wiki software implements the simple idea that Web pages should be easy, even trivial, to create, and that anyone reading the page should be able to correct, improve, revise and add to the page. Wikis (the word means "quick" in Hawaiian) have become popular on the World Wide Web. With simple formatting rules to make it easy to build well-organized hyperlinked pages, a wiki becomes an efficient means of creating a Web site. One worthwhile wiki for business collaboration is Clifford Adam's UseModWiki.

Download-To-Own Movies: Get Less For
More!

Download-To-Own Movies: Get Less For
More!
01/16/2004 01:03 PM
You may recall CinemaNow - the major studio backed online movie downloading company - from the review in the NY Times last year which included such great quotes as: "How CinemaNow stays in business is a marvel. The site is so marred by typos and poor programming, it could have been a high school sophomore's first Web design project." and "CinemaNow stand[s] out primarily for [its] puny selection, poor video quality and overly rigid copy protection." A ringing endorsement. Well, now it looks like they're trying to adjust their business model, and instead of just allowing people to watch movies for a limited time, they're starting up a "download-to-own" feature complete with annoying copy protection (of course). As with the download movie rentals, you get less for more. Now, instead of actually owning a DVD that you can play anywhere on any machine (and which comes with extras and perhaps a booklet with more info), you get a digital copy of the movie that is completely clamped down on the machine you downloaded it on. Also, the prices are more expensive than buying a DVD. A quick look at their featured choice for "download-to-own" shows that you can get the same movie, brand new, on DVD at Amazon for $3.75 less. They're also claiming that you can now start watching a movie 30 seconds after it begins downloading. If it really works well, that's great, but if it includes typical video buffer loading pauses, I imagine it's not going to make many movie renters happy.

Video Edit Magic Express makes video editing as simple as possible for the average user at a new low breakthrough price. We have departed from the storyboard concept most video editors use to a more familiar method of select, cut/copy, and paste editing. This makes video editing more intuitive to new users and retains the flexibility of full featured video editing. Now you can easily decorate your videos by dragging and dropping effects, adding background scores, and changing the volume of individual tracks for audio mixing. The built-in capture tool enables you to quickly capture video from a camcorder, capture-card, or USB video camera and move it to your hard disk. You can also add captured footage directly to the timeline for further editing. You can combine video, audio, and image files on the same timeline for editing operations, making it simple to compose your video masterpiece!
