03/31/2005 12:36 PMExpanding its measures to combat software piracy, Microsoft will
require users who want to download local language add-ons to Windows
to first validate their copy of the operating system as legitimate.
Microsoft offers versions of Windows XP in 24 languages at present. It
supports an additional 20 languages with free operating system
add-ons, called Windows XP Language Interface Packs. The add-ons do
not offer complete translations of the Windows XP user interface, but
cover many of its common features.
Over the coming months, Microsoft will require users who want to
download the add-ons to first authenticate their copy of Windows,
blocking access for users of pirated Windows copies, the company says
in a statement. The first add-on to be affected will be the Vietnamese
language interface pack, which was made available this week and
requires validation to download.

Need A Windows Server Firewall? So Does
Microsoft
03/19/2005 02:22 AMAn article from the Register by Mark Burnett of SecurityFocus has me
thinking about Windows Servers. We all know that most hosting servers
for websites and ftp servers are Linux-based servers. But Microsoft
has been pushing their new Windows Server software as being better then Apache, the Linux server software of
choice. This article says that there is no adequate firewall for
Windows servers. Check it out and let us know if you think they missed
something..
It seems like the solution would be simple enough. I have been
patiently waiting for someone to come along with a capable,
full-featured Windows firewall so I can stop explaining to everyone
why the right way to go is probably Linux with iptables. But my wait
has mostly been in vain. Every time I think I have found the ultimate
Windows firewall solution, I end up being disappointed in one way or
another… There are plenty of personal
firewalls out there that work quite well for desktop computers, but
they all fall short for server use. Some are obviously better than
others, but all are plagued with common problems such as poor logging
facilities, limited configuration capabilities, slow performance, and
worst of all, many of them seem to be prone to blue screens when
traffic gets very high.

(KB828026), some URL script commands do not fire even though they
would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command
issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would
cause 100% CPU utilization in certain scenarios.

Microsoft Windows Server plans for 2005
Microsoft Windows Server plans for 2005
12/24/2004 12:55 PMFollowing the announcement that Microsoft lost the EU appeal
against removing Windows Media Player from it's Windows XP operating
system, what is Microsoft planning for 2005?
It's not yet clear whether work has begun on removing Windows Media
Player from XP but if work is planned to start in the New Year then
this could significantly delay Longhorn, again. Depending on how
Microsoft chose to remove Windows Media Player they may need to
recompile different sections of the operating system to ensure there
is no shell integration of WMP whatsoever. Changing an operating
system and ensuring it has hot fix compatibility may require an
external beta test to OEMs and partners. It's a big job and one that
will inevitably slow down Longhorn progress.
On a bright note 2005 is the year for Windows Server. Last week I sat
down with Mark Tennant (Windows Server Product Manager). Although we
joked about WinFS (which should be code-named
Hokey Pokey) and I fumed about
anywhere access being removed from
R2; it still seems that the Windows Server team have a lot of things
going on in 2005.
Perhaps most significantly in the first half of 2005 we'll see the
first Service Pack released. Taking a lot of security improvements
from XPSP2, it aims to deliver increased reliability, scalability,
security and performance. According to Mark
"From our internal
tests we’re seeing 20% more users for ERP business applications, 50%
more users per server for Terminal Services."
At around the same time we'll see the Windows Server x64 editions
available.
"Our approach here is to provide low-cost, high
volume 64-bit computing with our partners to a broad segment of the
market. Again we’re seeing some big performance improvements in some
of the traditional windows workloads (Web Servers, File and Print,
Terminal Services) as well as customers running their existing 32-bit
apps on the x64 platform."
In the second half of 2005 the team will release Windows Server 2003
"R2" and Windows Server 2003 Compute Cluster Edition.
"This will see us supporting high performance hardware and
related industry standards such as MPI-2 and RDMA over Ethernet and
Infiniband, as well as MPICH".
Windows Update Services is the highly anticipated and highly delayed
replacement to SUS (Software Update Services). Currently SUS is
lacking in terms of functionality but 2005 looks to be the year that
WUS will finally make its debut in the first half.
Keep your browser firmly on Neowin.net for the latest Windows Server
news in the new year. May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a
very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

05/18/2004 01:31 PMA Microsoft Corp. executive last week cleared up what had been a murky
Windows Server plan, affirming release dates of 2005 for a product
update code-named R2 and 2007 for the next major software release,
known as Longhorn. Bob Muglia, senior vice president of Microsoft's
Windows Server division, said the company wants to be consistent with
the product's release cycle. Plans call for a major release of Windows
Server roughly every four years and an incremental update two to two
and a half years after each major release, he said. Muglia earlier
this year told Computerworld only that Longhorn would emerge no sooner
than 2006.
