Town Sold On eBay Not Really Sold

Town Sold On eBay Not Really Sold 12/29/2003 04:51 AM
Earlier this month, I wrote about how it's become popular to use eBay as not just a buying and selling platform, but also as a PR platform for such things as selling towns - because you're almost guaranteed to get press coverage for selling something weird. Of course, it looks like there might also be a downside. Last year, a town in California received a ton of press for being put up on eBay, after conventional attempts to sell it had failed. That press coverage helped push up interest in the town until someone "won" the town with a bid of $1.8 million. Of course, as we pointed out at the time, with many such high profile auctions, the top bid is likely to be bogus. A few months after the original auction, it was reported that the sale still hadn't been finalized. Now, exactly a year after the original eBay auction happened, the folks who "own" the town are admitting that the buyer disappeared and never sent a check. Even worse, the sellers then went down the list of everyone else who bid on the town and failed to find a single legitimate buyer. Thus, the town is back up for sale - but not on eBay and at half the price of what they "sold" it for last year.

Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods?

Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods? 01/07/2004 06:38 PM
Well, as every other tech site in the world is now telling you, the not-so-secret rumors that Apple was coming out with a "mini iPod", cleverly named "iPod mini" are completely true. The other big story people are focusing on are that Apple has gotten past their Henry Ford-style color options, and will offer the iPod mini in multiple colors. You can read all the details at other sites, but in looking over the stories about the device, I'm wondering if the iPod mini will replace the iPod itself as the popular music device of choice. Personally, I don't own an iPod or any portable digital music player (I barely have any digital music - so buying such a device would only mean I need to rip all my CDs, which is a project I'm still not ready to bother with). Still, the iPod mini seems to make a lot more sense to me than many other portable music devices. The early MP3 players had way too little memory, but once you get up into the 4 gigabyte range, I wonder how much more some people need. Historically, of course, that's a dangerous viewpoint to take - since we've always figured out ways to fill up empty storage space. With Apple even advertising games, calendars and other iPod apps - you can imagine that the memory will go. However, if I were in the market for such a device, I'd definitely go with the mini iPod version right now: it's a better size for carrying around and it's "good enough" in terms of storage space - not to mention that it's cheaper. Thus, while I'm sure there are some people who simply need to have more storage space, I'm wondering if this mini iPod will steal marketshare away from its big brother.

Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay

Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay
05/21/2004 02:35 AM
Back in 2002 there was a tremendous amount of hype when Bridgeville, the small (mostly deserted) California town was put up for sale on eBay. It eventually sold in an auction for $1.8 million - and got a tremendous amount of press attention. The only problem: the $1.8 million bid was a hoax. A whole year went by and the owners of the "town" sheepishly admitted that the buyer (and his money) never showed up. Now, however, the town has been sold again - but not on eBay, and back down at its original asking price of $700,000. Even with the failure of the actual sale to go through, though, people still remember that you can "sell a town on eBay," contributing to the use of eBay as a PR platform beyond just its ability to match buyers and sellers.

Today as I sent an IM to a friend correcting a their/there/they're use in a blog post, it reminded me that I should post a lazyweb request for an MT plugin I've always wanted.

I want a MT plugin that will let a select group of my closest, most trusted friends correct typos in text and URLs on my blog posts and republish their changes without my intervention. If I'm gone for a couple days and improperly used your when I meant you're, I'd love it if a friend fixed that while I was away. I first got the idea when I was trying to think of ways to make Orkut or Friendster useful. If there was some API to those apps that let MT know if someone was a best friend or life partner-level connection, they could be granted temporary edit rights on my blog (maybe Flickr's API could let this work for people I designate as a friend and family member, which seems to be the closest form of relationship there).

Ideally, I'd like an easy way to say that 4 or 5 people I trust could make edits. And I suppose the edits should be checked before and after, with a certain byte count limit, lest you allow your friends to completely rewrite your post. An email telling me what took place would be nice, but I'd like my friends to go ahead and save their changes, with a way for me to rescue the earlier pre-edit entry just in case.

Actually, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to allow anyone to suggest an edit on the post, sending me an email, with a one-click way to approve or disapprove it. Maybe after a random stranger has properly corrected me half a dozen times, I could elevate their status to having republish rights on the edits so I wouldn't have to approve them anymore.

A plugin like this would basically wiki-ize the weblog world, allowing readers to participate and correct small mistakes. I often write in margins of books and email authors all the little typos I found while reading their novel, but this would put that kind of power right into anyone's hands. In the world of programming they say "given a million eyeballs, all bugs are shallow" and maybe in this case, given a million editors, all typos will be fixed.

It can't be impossible to make this happen, right?
