relatively intelligent solution (only blocking port 25 on those
customers who appear to be spamming), it looks like Comcast is seeing
some amount of success in slowing down (what they admit is) the
"world's #1 spammer": themselves. The new strategy has already
cut the amount of Comcast originated
spam by 35%. Obviously, there's still a quite a lot of spam to
go, but to cut it that much in just about a month is a good sign.

Will A DirecTV Customer On Comcast's

08/20/2004 12:52 PMComcast's latest attempt at "reality TV" has some quite skeptical.
Broadband
Reports tells us that the latest advertising gimmick from the
company to try to win back customers they've been losing to satellite
TV is to put on a "reality TV" style commercial, where they follow
around a happy DirecTV user as he debates whether or not to switch.
Of course, the extra detail is that
the happy DirecTV user
just happens to be a copywriter for the ad agency Comcast hired to
create these commercials. Everyone involved claims that he's free
to make up his own mind -- but if he chooses poorly, it could mean (a)
the end result of the experiment is never told to the public and (b)
the ad agency loses a big customer in Comcast. But, they still
insist... no bias at all. Of course, these days, I think most people
are skeptical enough to already assume that the whole thing has been
scripted in advance.

Comcast's WiFi router lets your ISP spy
on you, shut you down
05/07/2004 03:35 AMOm Malik warns that the Linksys WiFi boxes that Comcast is supplying
to its customers allow Comcast to remotely detect and disconnect
devices on your home network, like your VoIP phone (which competes
with Comcast's long-distance service).
If you scroll through the press release, you come to a section which
says that the gateway supports a CableHome 1.0 "for the ability to
deliver secure, managed services from Comcast’s head-end network
to the subscribers’ home network." Now there is a big problem
with this thing - for instance, the Cablehome 1.0 standard allows
cable operators to snoop around their home networks and learn things
such as how many computers are attached to the gateway and what kind
of traffic they are generating/receiving. (Beware Vonage fans, this
could be used to detect your Vonage ATA as well.)
In case you were wondering, where’s the juice. Go to the Cable
Labs website and read this document. Scroll down to Section 6.3.1 and
read:
The goals for the CableHome Management Portal include:
* Enable viewing of LAN IP Device information obtained via the
CableHome DHCP Portal (CDP)
* Enable viewing of the results of LAN IP Device performance
monitoring done by the CableHome Test Portal (CTP)
* Provide the capability to disable LAN segments

Bullet Trains
Bullet Trains
01/04/2004 12:23 AMJapan's maglev train sets record: CNN had a story on
Headline News about maglev trains and it got the geek in me all
excited. They mentioned this one.
The experimental three-car maglev was carrying passengers
when it set the world's top speed for a train, clocking at 581 kph
(361 mph)...
Now, here's the deal: 600 m.p.h. in a plane is not really a
problem, because there's nothing to run into in the air (I know, I
know — other planes, buildings, the ground...don't get smart).
But 361 m.p.h. on train tracks? On the ground? Where there are
things like cars, and cows, and school buses full of little children
that could end up on the tracks? That 361 m.p.h. would seem so much
faster if you ran into something.
It happened in 1998 in Germany. One hundred twenty people died when abullet
train derailed and hit an overpass. And it was only travelling at 175
mp.h.
I don't want to be alarmist or anything, but that kind of speed,
that close to stuff that's as unforgiving as an overpass just makes me
a little nervous. And it's only a matter of time before Jon Voight
and Tom Cruise get into
a fight on top of one of them, and then what happens?

up chomping down on a live 9 mm bullet. Police opened the rest of the

but didn't find any more bullets. Meanwhile, the woman, suffering from
a tummy ache, visited a hospital where x-rays revealed another round

or even wooden molds. These days only a few diehard hobbyists still do
it, and they use aluminum molds. But even fewer people still make

05/18/2004 01:24 AMI've started trying to exercise more regularly for the past couple
weeks, going for a 12 mile, hilly bike ride 3 times a week. Today I
did my ride with a decent average speed and finished it in the
shortest time yet. The loop I ride has a couple 10% grades in it and I
do about 250ft of climbing through it. I was walking around the house
today feeling pretty cocky about my progress when I sat down to watch
one of my current favorite shows, The Lance
Chronicles.
On tonight's episode they followed Lance Armstrong through his
european training. One of his regular rides was a 4 1/2 hour, 30 mile
climb from the flats high into the mountains, going straight up. It
turns out he climbs over 13,000ft in that single ride. When I was in
marathon shape, I did a few hikes where I would gain about 6,000ft in
a single day from basecamp to summit, and Lance is doing more than
twice that. As a training ride.
I'm thinking he's a shoe-in for this year's Tour.

Bullet Stopping
06/07/2004 01:56 PMJoe Schmoe writes in with a link to a story that shows that
there may be some additional benefits to driving while yakking
(though, in fairly unique circumstances). In South Africa, a man
talking on his mobile phone while driving a truck was attacked by
gunmen who shot at him. The bullet ripped through his hand,
but was
stopped from entering his head by the mobile phone. Next thing
you know they'll need to start offering Kevlar-based phones.

attitude. While driving his truck near Johannesburg, South Africa,
Steyn was attacked by hijackers who took a pot shot at him in an
attempt to, you know, blow his brains out. Fortunately for him, he was
talking on his Nokia handset, which didn't save his hand but managed
to catch the bullet that would have otherwise ended up in his brain.
Steyn swerved, ran the attacker off the road, and now jokingly adds
that future anonymous hijackers should watch out: his new phone has a
camera. (Thanks, Teemu!)

Does The RIAA's Silver Bullet Break

Does The RIAA's Silver Bullet Break
Wiretap Laws?
07/14/2004 06:35 AMThe RIAA has been running around the halls of Congress
showing
off Audible Magic as the "silver bullet" against file sharers.
Audible Magic is a system that claims to be able to identify and stop
file sharing of unauthorized files in its tracks. While some have
accused
the product of being vaporware, it certainly is getting plenty of
attention. The EFF has taken a quick look and pointed out that for
all the hype, there are some
simple
workarounds that would make Audible Magic ineffective very
quickly. However, Ernest Miller raises an even more important
question:
does
Audible Magic violate wiretap laws? After all, it's intercepting
communications without the users' knowledge. He goes through the
various exceptions and points out that Audible Magic doesn't seem to
apply at all. Thus, it likely is an illegal wiretap. The one way to
make it "legal" is if consent is somehow given beforehand. Then, of
course, the problems get worse, because you've basically had someone
agree to have all of their internet traffic open for snooping. Seems
like an awful lot of effort for technology that doesn't even work.
