Adina on friendship
Adina on friendship
02/07/2005 01:50 AMAdina addresses issues Chris Allen raises about the flatness of online
social networks. Snippet: I think part of the problem is being a
post-freudian modern; intimacy is the ultimate goal of relationship
and a source of secular transcendence. We need to go back to a more
18th century concept of public identity to describe the pleasures and
rewards of broad acquaintance. Lots more good stuff....
Friendship Circle
Friendship Circle
02/10/2004 03:02 AM
One of the common weaknesses of existing social network services is
the lack of easy
flexible ways to differentiate types or depth of friendship.
Orkut, for example,
allows one to group friends but also requires one to name
each group.
While this requirement seems trivial and makes sense logically, it
deters users from
using the feature in practice.
Friendship Circle is a way to express types and depths of
friendship with minimal
effort. A Friendship Circle is basically a nested rings of
people (represented
by icons with miniture photo and name) around a person. To
use the Friendship
Circle, the user drag and drops icons from a palette of friends to
the circle.
Note that this can be done using DHTML+CSS.
Distance away from the center represent depth of friendship.
So the innermost
ring is populated by family members, relatives, and best
friends. The outermost
ring is populated by people whom you don't really care about (i.e.
connection-addicts).
Angle of placement on a ring is used to express types of
friendship. To help
the user, the rings are divided into four lightly colored
quadrants: red, blue, green,
and yellow. Red and blue quadrants will most likely be used
to hold people with
personal and business relationships.
Update:
I drew up a mockup of Friendship Circle for those having trouble
visualizing from
my description.

On friendship and bl0gging
On friendship and bl0gging

This is a piece I've been working up to for quite some time,
and it'll probably be an audio blog post at some time soon.
I have five really good friends in the world. When I realized
that, saying that to one of them, she said that's pretty damned good
and I agree. These are people who I trust with knowing anything and
everything about me. People who could call me if they needed help. I
would drop everything to be there for them, and vice versa. But none
of these people have weblogs, and if they had them, I wouldn't point
to them, because (key point) then I would lose the ability to be
friends with them.
This came home to me talking with Len Apcar at the NY Times
just before the DNC. In a wide-ranging discussion I said that I had
given up on the idea of friendship in the blogosphere. Apcar said that
now I understood something about how they approach news. You can't be
friends with the people you cover. Or you can't cover people who are
friends. Either way it's equally true.
Okay, enough preamble. Ed Cone is a person I admire, I think he
could be a good friend, I'm sure he is to his friends, no doubt there,
but key point, he and I are not friends. That means I can point to him
(which I do) and write about his work (which I've not done recently)
without fear of turning this weblog into nothing more than a way of
scratching the itches of my friends.
Ninety-nine percent of the blogs you read are just that,
friendship favor-trading. Not this one. I will tell you when I think
someone is fucking up. They will think I am not being their friend,
and they will be right. But when I say something
a> is good, or someone is not fucking up, you can trust that I'm
saying that because I believe it to be true.
(Of course there are exceptions to every rule. One of my
friends needs a kidney, so from time to time I write about it here,
being careful to explain that I'm doing a favor for a personal
friend.)

Wireless Friendship Beads for Kids
Wireless Friendship Beads for Kids
04/04/2005 10:46 AM
I can't pretend to know the inner workings of young girls,
except for knowing there is a desire to wear shiny bangles and a
surprising amount of blood. Ruth kikin-Gil probably has a better idea
of what sort of glowing, wirelessly communicative tchotckes the young
women would go for and has built her master's thesis around that
arcane wisdom, designing, in concept, a group of paired 'beads' that
can be used by groups of female cronies to show friendship and
indicate mood.
As the group changes, so does the bracelet’s
composition. When two girls are no longer friends, they can remove
their friend’s bead from the bracelet and keep it as a memory of their
friendship. When they become friends again, few weeks later, the
removed beads can be added to the bracelet once again.
I'd
wear this, except I'd just need one bead for myself and one for 'all
of you people,' which I would then powder with a hammer.

yahoo goes after google (finally)
yahoo goes after google (finally)
01/06/2004 09:14 AMWell, well. Finally, a year after purchasi
ng Inktomi, and six months after buying
Overture it seems that Yahoo has finally digested both
acquisitions and is ready to move on from using Google for its
searches and begin growing on its own in the area. The Wall Street
Journal reports today (subscription required) that
Yahoo is now widely expected to dump Google "within a few months".
Quote:
Some marketing firms, which help advertisers
manage their online campaigns for search-related ads, say they have
been told Yahoo will switch from Google to its own technology as early
as the first quarter.
Now, I suppose we all expected
that to happen at some point (I for one am surprised it didn't happen
sooner) but there's more meat to it, including mentions of Yahoo
preparing to leverage its various web properties in making search a
more personalized affair. Quote:
Yahoo isn't discussing
many of its search plans in detail. But some steps toward independence
can already be seen on the shopping section of Yahoo's site, which is
now using Inktomi's technology. Type in "digital camera," for example,
and the site shows pictures of specific cameras along with their
prices, flanked by "shopping tools" that allow users to quickly call
up price comparisons, fuller specifications and user reviews. By
contrast, the same search on Yahoo's front page, which still uses
Google's technology, returns a familiar text-based list of links,
starting with those sponsored by retailers and followed by other
camera-related sites ranked by popularity.
In the future, Yahoo officials say, searches could become much more
personalized. They could be tailored to return results that reflect
users' past Web-surfing behavior, for example, or preferences or
interests they list in a profile.
With Google now
expected to go public sometime before mid-year, things are surely
going to get interesting in the search space. AOL might have to do
something too to keep up with the other portals (ie., MSN and Yahoo),
especially as dial-up erodes as a market advantage over time.
