How many links from Google to your site?
How many links from Google to your site?
07/13/2004 11:44 PMLast summer, I setup a
dual platform system, and it uses a single keyboard and mouse
linked to a PC for control, but I have to keep an extra mouse on the
mac to wake it up.
During a reboot of my PC today, I had five minutes of keyboardless
control of my mac, using its own mouse. With Google.com as my browser
start page, I figured I'd surf around as I waited for the PC and its
keyboard to come back to life. In a matter of seconds, I clicked
around Google, ended up at Blogger, a few clicks later I was at
Evhead, and from there I was at my own site. Whoa! How'd that
happen?
I went back and counted the steps:
1. From Google to the "more »"
link
2. From the more page to Blogger
3. From Blogger to their about
page
4. From the about page to the "buy us" link to Dan Gillmor's story on the Blogger/Pyra deal
5. The story links to Evhead
6. Ev's site links to
an entry on my
blog
Six links from Google.com to my blog. Actually, a few hours later,
that post has scrolled off Evhead so I guess it's not such a short
path anymore.
A minute of more clicking and I found a second path from Google to
my site that used 7 links. From Blogger, to their Knowledge Base, is a
link to a Wired story on Blogger Burnout, which links to Kottke.org
which links to my site. While the KB link to Wired is also
time-sensitive and will scroll off, I suspect from the Evhead path, you can get to
almost any blog online.
I'm kind of amazed I can get from Google to my site, but I'm more
amazed it only took a handful of clicks (remember, since I didn't have
a keyboard entry for a few minutes, this is how I discovered it). I
wonder if someone could write a simple script to determine the most
direct path from Google to your site.
I think I stumbled upon a new web game. How many links does
it take to get to your site from Google.com?

02/10/2004 03:56 PMLike all the other cool kids I've made a weblog for short notes and
links. Go and subscribe already. It was much more work to setup the

and "template modules". I really should get the templating of my
weblog powered by Combust, that'd be fun....

Voice-over-Internet Protocol market. Voipreview.org is “one-stop shop”
to researching the best packages and rates of VoIP providers in your
area. VoIP providers are examined side-by-side in categories such as

WoW (world of

say, "Darn, Chinese Farmers..." What? He explained that
there were hundreds of Chinese players that "farmed" the game for
profit. They travel the map generating game "gold" so they can
sell it on eBay. It was an online example of clear
cutting. LOL. Sure enough.
Here they

Farmers Grow Backsides with Wi-Fi
06/18/2004 03:58 PMWi-Fi networks on farms should allow farmers to control and monitor
more of their operations remotely: Trial projects attempt to show that
with farm-wide Wi-Fi coverage, that irrigation, packing, and other
parts of a farm's business could be handled through remote control.
Eventually, tractors and other devices might be run by wire (or by
wireless, as it were). Anthropomorphism abounds: runaway tractors are
a risk, but crazy runaway tractors? "What we're really scared of is
killing someone if it goes nuts," Pocknee said of the robotic
tractors. Likewise, this strange statement needs some explanation:
Pocknee can sit in his office and see the position of a 600-foot
irrigation system in a nearby field on his computer screen. The system
is equipped with a global positioning system to provide its location.
A wireless video camera shows how it is operating. Why first thought
is "why would an irrigation system move?" and then I realized these
are irrigation systems that are rolled over fields. Of course, this
kind of automation helps big agribusiness more than small farmers who
may be unable to afford the technology investment upfront on a scale
where it makes sense. Labor can be less expensive than technology, as
certain countries have taught us. I'd like to also see projects in
which open-source-flashed Linksys gateways are hooked together for a
few hundred dollars on a 100-acre farm than ever more multi-million
dollar research investments that let farms be run from hundreds of
miles away. [link via Robert Moskowitz]...

BBC story about a WiFi project in Nepal that allows yak farmers in
remote Himalayan locations to keep in touch with their families back
home. File under pretty frickin' amazing. Snip:
"They are taking advantage of a wi-fi network set up in a remote
region of the mountain kingdom where there are no phones or other
means of communication.
It is the result of a campaign led by local
teacher Mahabir Pun, and backed by volunteers and donations, to bring
the internet to an isolated part of the world.
So far, the Nepal Wireless Networking project has hooked up five
villages in the area using wireless technology."
