Bobby
Fuller<
/a> was a Texas based rock and roll singer best known for the immortal
rebel anthem "I
Fought The Law,". Considered by many to be the heir to
Buddy Holly as the king of Texas Rock, he built on Holly's style with
songs like the aforementioned "...Law,"
"Jenny Lee," "Love's Made A Fool Of
You," and the 2 1/2 minute masterpiece "Let Her
Dance." And then it ended,
at age
22, in very
weird circumstances. Over the years, interest in Fuller and his work
has ebbed and flowed, and plenty of
archival material surfaced, but the mystery of his death
remains unsolved, although many have

Health insurers to fat kids: Go play
Dance Dance Revolution
04/04/2005 01:18 PMCory Doctorow:
American health insurers are working with obesity researchers to
encourage children to play Dance Dance Revolution on home consoles
with dance-mats as a way of reversing childhood obesity and the
concomitant health costs later in life.
Jones is one of 85 children in an at-home study trying the popular
Dance Dance Revolution video game to boost their activity. The study
is being done by West Virginia's public employees insurance group in
hopes it will lead to better health and lower costs.
Jones lost about 10 pounds by changing his diet. Now, after two weeks
playing the game, he has lost another 10.

06/24/2005 06:25 PMCory Doctorow:
Kickass Kung Fu is a video-game in which you use real martial-arts
moves to control an on-screen kung-fu fighter in order to best both
human and AI opponents.
The game takes place on a 5 meter cushioned playfield suitable for
martial arts and acrobatics training. Using custom computer vision
technology, you are taken inside an artificial reality where the
normal laws of physics no longer apply. Your movements are exaggerated
so that you can easily dodge your opponent's bullets by jumping five
meters in the air and landing behind his back. Using the dual
projected screens, one at each end of the playfield, you can also
continue by counter-attacking your stupefied enemy from the behind.

04/04/2005 01:54 PMThere have been discussions over the past few years about the problem
of childhood obesity and how
video
games that force kids to be active may be at least part of the
solution. While going outside and doing something is probably better,
if they must be staring at a screen, they might as well be active
about it. It appears that one insurance company has decided to test
this out and is
running a study by giving Dance, Dance Revolution to kids
in an effort to make them lose some weight. While others have noted
the aerobic nature of the game (and the game apparently has a calorie
burning counter as an option), this appears to be the first insurance
company promoting the game. Next thing you know, your car insurance
rates will rise if you play Grand Theft Auto...

05/24/2004 06:59 PMThis CNN piece follows the tales of formerly supersized boy and girl
geeks who shed *lots* of unwanted weight playing the wacky Japanese
electronic game "Dance Dance Revolution." In DDR, players stomp around
on a grid of brightly lit squares while hyperfast techno music blares
at them from a video display unit. There's also a home version, which
sells for under US$50.
As she cooled herself in front of a fan at a video arcade, two teenage
boys danced on a machine nearby. Their sneakers pounded out a staccato
rhythm at a pace so fast that "Lord of the Dance"'s Michael Flatley
would be envious.
Not everyone sees dramatic results. Seventeen-year-old Justin Meeks
says his body is more toned, but his weight hasn't changed. He's
pleased to point out, though, that his dancing skills have helped him
get girls. "Two. I'm guilty of that," Justin said with a grin as he
watched friends play DDR.

"We're a group of DDR players in Norway." Do they play other bemani
games? "No, just DDR." He points to the guy he was playing with, now
off the machine and chatting to his girlfriend. "He's from Sweden, he
has a DDR group there too." The machine is now in the control of the
third chap, a large-ish bloke with shoulder-length hair. "He has a
group in France, but they play all kinds of music games." Do you guys
play competitively? "Sometimes... like tomorrow. It's why we're all
here - there's a big contest at the Namco arcade in Westminster.
There'll be players from four different countries. It's pretty big."

03/19/2003 10:25 PM I listened to Bush's speech tonight with increasing disgust. The lost
opportunities, had he been more interested in disarming Hussein, and
less interested in proving that the US can dominate everybody,
sickened me. Made me want to send him a pretzel. More lies, repeated
over and over again. And lest anyone take seriously his declaration
that military action could be avoided if the Tyrant Hussein fled the
country, American officials in the Middle East are already saying
"Even if Saddam Hussein leaves Iraq within 48 hours, as President
Bush demanded, allied forces plan to move north into Iraqi territory,"
Bush is determined to get his war, and Hussein is determined to give
it to him. And, as Marine Major Chris Hughes, said, "The first image
of this war will define the conflict," Now we have marines in charge
of the most important part of the war, what America's image is, for
George Bush's re-election campaign. So the dance of the death starts.
For my image, one of the works of the great Mexican artist, Jose
Posada, seemed particularly appropriate today. Click to see a larger

Netgear's got a new
"Wireless Travel Router," the WGR101, a pint-sized 802.11g device
designed to provide WiFi in hotel rooms or anywhere else you might
need it. A built in "double firewall" provides security in addition to
64 or 128-bit WEP and (when they get the drivers done, it looks like)
WPA upgradeable. No idea what sort of coverage range it will provide,
but if you need a WiFi router you can toss in a bag, the 0.7 x 2.3 x
3.4 inch WGR101 can be had for about 100 bucks.

11/18/2003 09:05 PMNetGear introduced an AP designed for small or medium businesses that
can deliver 108Mbps throughput: NetGear uses the Atheros chip that
Glenn and I reported on for PC World at the end of last week. Broadcom
claims the Atheros chip causes extreme performance degradation in
nearby Wi-Fi networks. I tried hard to speak to a NetGear spokesperson
for the PC World article but they weren't able to dig anyone up for
me. It's somewhat amusing that the NetGear folks sent us the press
release about a new 108Mbps product with no reference to our repeated
conversations last week regarding the PC World article....

NetGear Adds MIMO
01/05/2005 11:17 AM MIMO is cropping up all over: NetGear is the latest to announce a
MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out) product. They're partnering with
Video54. Linksys has apparently chosen Airgo. Samsung and Athena
announced single-chip silicon yesterday. The near-term problem with
MIMO isn't with the technology itself, but rather the non-standard
higher speed modes. No one is claiming interference, but these modes
won't be certified by The Wi-Fi Alliance or any other group. That
means interoperability, even among devices made by manufacturers using
the same silicon isn't assured. The worst part, in my estimation, is
that this generation of MIMO technology isn't what the final 802.11n
specification will look like. So purchasing MIMO today except for
specific applications in which you need substantially higher
throughput and range from a single device over interoperable,
certified 802.11g means you're buying a dead-on device. 802.11n might
achieve speeds of several hundred megabytes per second, and there's is
practically a total certainty that the final 802.11n won't be just a
firmware upgrade, but rather a difference in both hardware and silicon
compared to today's MIMO devices....

mail-in rebate: We don't like to highlight deals unless they're quite
remarkable. If you've been looking to upgrade to 802.11g and swear
that you'll send the rebate in, you can buy NetGear's home-oriented
gateway for $37 net. If you use Amazon.com's slow shipping in the
U.S., there's no fee for dispatching it to you. NetGear is pushing its
faster line of "108" Mbps gear, and this rebate probably reflects a
desire to move out plain (but compatible) 802.11g devices. You can
also get a bargain on a D-Link 802.11b access point, as Amazon is
selling the DI-514 Wireless 802.11b Cable/DSL Router for about $17.50
after a $30 mail-in rebate....

Netgear Balks on WPA Certification for
Some Gear
03/08/2004 11:15 PMJust after the Wi-Fi Alliance touted how many companies have received
certification for the WPA security specification, some vendors are
suggesting they may not seek certification for some products: Going
forward, the Wi-Fi Alliance requires WPA for any product to be
certified. Netgear said that while it plans to certify ts products
that target business users, the company is not sure if it will submit
its consumer devices for certification because consumers are happy
with the more basic security mechanisms. This story points to Belkin
and SMC as other vendors that haven't certified their gear. But Belkin
says that its products support WPA but just haven't been certified
yet. Netgear is the only company this story cites as balking on
certifying some of its gear to meet WPA requirements. The Wi-Fi
Alliance bragged in February that 175 products had been certified for
WPA since September 2003. While it would be a concern if a bunch of
vendors were holding out on WPA, Netgear alone doesn't prove that such
a trend is happening. With all the buzz around the lack of security in
Wi-Fi, I would think that most vendors will want to offer as much
security as possible to reassure nervous potential users....
