The Senate Puts Orrin Hatch In Charge Of

The Senate Puts Orrin Hatch In Charge Of
Writing Copyright Laws
03/19/2005 03:17 AM
You may remember Orrin Hatch from such backwards thinking proposals as destr oying computers of any copyright violator or telli ng the FBI they should work on civil copyright cases or (most recently) his plan to make the iPod illegal with his INDUCE Act (though, he eventually agreed to exceptions for the iPods, plenty of other technologies would become illegal overnight). He's also the guy who tried to defend the INDUCE Act by admitting it might not be a good idea, but he that's fine as long as he does something. Yes, he believes in legislating for the sake of legislating even when it might make things worse. Well, it now turns out that good old Senator Hatch has been put in charge of the Senate panel that writes copyright laws. In other words, we should have another couple years of silliness in copyright laws coming out of the Senate.

Canadian Copyright Board allows
downloads, copyright levies
12/14/2003 12:27 PM

The Copyright Board of Canada issued a ruling on " private copying ", largely via peer-to-peer computing, with several components. First, downloading is acceptable, but uploading is not (presumably to target hyperpirates). Second, new mechanisms for levies were described, freezing current ones, allowing new charges.

the Copyright Board said uploading or distributing copyrighted works online appeared to be prohibited under current Canadian law. However, the country's copyright law does allow making a copy for personal use and does not address the source of that copy or whether the original has to be an authorized or noninfringing version, the board said.

TAIPEI -- If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then Apple Computer executives walking around the Computex show in Taipei this week should be feeling pretty good. Several products were on display from local Taiwanese vendors that, while perhaps not exact copies of Apple products, were surely inspired by them.

Nature-Inspired Computing

Nature-Inspired Computing 02/17/2004 08:01 AM
Nature-Inspired Computing
http://www .computer.org/intelligent/ex2004/x1002.pdf

Nature-Inspired Computing - Increased understanding of biological systems will lead to breakthroughs in computing and artificial intelligence. By Nigel Shadbolt. IEEE Intelligent Systems. "It isn't hard to recognize the influence of biological processes and methods on our science and technologies. Norbert Wiener's cybernetics was very much influenced by feedback and control processes that he observed in biological systems. Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts' characterization of the neuron owed much to their understanding of biology, mathematics, and electronics. In artificial intelligence and intelligent systems, we've also kept the faith with living systems even when not aiming to build exact simulations. AI and IS have been fundamentally interested in the phenomenology of living systems - perception, decision making, action, and learning. So we might say that we've been doing nature-inspired computing all along."

Regarding Segway robotics, I thought you might be interested to know that DARPA funded development of a Segway-based common robotics platform (the "RMP"): Link. A group at CMU is working on a Robocup robot soccer team using the Segway RMP: Link. One cool thing about their work is that it's the first robot soccer team (as far as I know) that can play with and against humans on the field. Unfortunately they don't seem to have any images/video of that online; I saw some video at a conference a few weeks ago.

Random thing #1: I hear there's an upcoming exhibit at the Center for Land Use Interpretation of video from cameras mounted on sheep, spiders, tumbleweeds, etc. Sounded cool. Link. Sheep stampede video: Link. Random thing #2: Origami folding robot at CMU: Link.

Most people do not associate microprocessors with DNA, or aircraft design with butterflies. But scientists and researchers are increasingly looking to biological systems as models for new technologies. This trend has implications for computing, materials science and engineering, robotics, and much more.

A Web site from Michigan State University (1) is a useful starting point for learning about biologically inspired technologies. In addition to briefly discussing the natural processes that are most commonly studied in the development of such technologies, there is a large collection of links to other research efforts and related material. The Ant Colony Optimization project (2) uses the behavior of ants as a model to solve optimization problems, such as how to minimize Internet traffic congestion. Several downloadable research papers are included on the project's homepage, as well as links to news stories, radio broadcasts, and conference proceedings about ant algorithms. A seminar course at the University of Virginia (3) in spring 2003 considered aspects of biologically-inspired computing. The course homepage has links to journal articles and research papers that range in topic from evolutionary programming to spacecraft designs based on living cells. Biomimetics is the focus of work being done at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (4). One of the selected publications available on the Web site will be presented at an international conference in July 2003. The paper discusses the use of artificial muscles in intelligent robots. A research group at the California Institute of Technology (5) is studying the capability of DNA and other biomolecules to process information and implement algorithms. A general overview of the group's purpose and motivation is provided, as well as a number of publications. An excellent background of some of the most significant developments in artificial life and intelligence is given in a 56-page paper from Hewlett-Packard Laboratories (6). The author discusses many different issues, including neural networks and software agents, and concludes by alluding to future application areas. (7) Discusses efforts to combine characteristics of several different species into one artificial creation to optimally serve the purposes of a mission. A Spam-Inspired Design Thrashing

A Spam-Inspired Design Thrashing 06/18/2004 11:13 AM

Larr y Taylor Spam Ministries: Word to the wise: don't spam Mean Dean, even if it's for ministry-related stuff. This is a great read.

Considering the fact that I'm still receiving unsolicited commercial email after having already complained directly and upstream, I have come to the conclusion that perhaps the best way to get old Larry Boy to quit spamming meis to give him what he wants, some website traffic. And why not? The Larry Taylor Ministries web site is after all a very good example of how NOT to design a personal ministry website. [...]

Nothing says cheap to a congregation than a pastor on a polyester leisure suit. Similarly, nothing conveys the message of low-rent like kitschy animate gifs and contrived backgrounds, both of which can be found on Rev. Taylor's site.[...]

A bit further down I found pulsating crosses with hearts placed on the website because they're relevant to ...I dunno ... perhaps to distract me from fishy "IXOYE" background that it makes any text not offset by a white background almost impossible to read?

Cockroach Inspired Touch Sensors for
Robots

cockroach_robot.jpgJohn Hopkins University is showing off their newest touch sensor for robots. Its flexible and wand-like antenna consists of six strain gauges that have been molded in urethane, giving it an accuracy of 1-1.5cm and allowing it to closely follow a wall. They also intend to install an actuator, allowing the antenna to sweep, making it more like their initial inspiration: the cockroach. At least somewhat more advanced than my Lego Mindstorms bulldozer's edge-sensor, the urethane-shelled sensors could easily find their way into forthcoming robots that need the ability to feel out their surroundings.

Yahoo Buys Oddpost In A Gmail-Inspired
Moment

Yahoo Buys Oddpost In A Gmail-Inspired
Moment
07/09/2004 08:29 PM
So, we actually heard about this a couple weeks ago, when someone (who knew) passed on the fact that Yahoo had bought Oddpost in an attempt to fight back against the Gmail craze. Now, though, the deal is official, so it's okay to talk about it (though it had been hinte d at earlier this week). It's really not that surprising, after all. Yahoo knew they needed to upgrade their email, and Oddpost has a great reputation for their interface. You can be sure that Yahoo wasn't the only company sniffing around and debating whether or not to buy up Oddpost. While it's probably not going to be the lead in most stories, it is quite interesting that one of Oddpost's nicer features is an integrated RSS reader. Yahoo keeps talking up the power of RSS, and perhaps this will allow them to make a bigger commitment. However, in all likelihood, it was just the mail interface that fascinated them. It seems like a good move by Yahoo who needed to do something.
