Linux Kernel Upgrade Fixes Security Flaws
http://zdnet.com. com/2100-1105_2-5135129.html

An upgrade has been issued for the Linux kernel to address two security flaws identified as serious. Marcelo Tosatti, who maintains the Linux 2.4 kernel series, said the security vulnerabilities of the older version pose significant risks to users and they should upgrade to the new kernel as soon as possible. One of the flaws fixed by the new kernel allows a hacker to change the privileges of a user account to those of the system's owner; the other flaw exposes some of the kernel's memory to intruders. Improvements to the 2.4 series kernel have otherwise been halted in an effort to encourage users to upgrade to the next series, the 2.6 kernel.

Eye of the Tiger 03/13/2003 12:53 PM

focustrainer.jpgIf you really need to have that extra edge when you play, there's a bizarre new "Focus Trainer" from SportsLink that's supposed to improve concentration and focus before atheletic activity and really get you into "The Zone". It sounds more like a trip to the Laserium if you ask us:

First, find a nice quiet place where you won't be bothered. Put the glasses and headphones on and pick a session. You can choose from 15 of them, ranging from "relaxed calmness" to "anxiety release." Press Start and wait. After a 10-second countdown, you hear a weird noise like a soothing low feedback. It gets louder and then softer, stunted a bit and then drawn out. Then the lights kick in. There are six small, flashing lights that blink furiously on the top rim of the glasses. Shut your eyes, take some deep breaths, and the effect is really strange.

Yeah, like every other mac person on the planet, I went and got tiger last night. Installed the thing without a problem on the 15" powerbook and gave it a spin. Didn't even take that long. The obligatory first impressions: They screwed with the look'n'feel again, for no reason I can particularly see. I think we're up to four separate possible looks if you count the dashboard widgets, maybe five with the spotlight GUI element. While I won't claim to be able to design or tweak this sort of thing, I do know it's a good idea to not...

On IRC today, Chris Nandor was remarking on how spotlight was chewing up vast amounts of CPU time constantly reindexing Eudora mailboxes when they're being downloaded. I was thinking he was wrong, since Eudora's traditionally pinned the CPU when downloading mail for me, and 100% is 100%, right? Well, turns out Chris was right. The importer does suck down a lot of CPU time, especially on large mailboxes. I dunno about you, but spotlight indexing is pretty useless for me with Eudora, what with everything globbed into big boxes. (Finding that a 10K message mailbox matches my search does...

Tiger 150, Longhorn 0

Tiger 150, Longhorn 0 08/29/2004 10:56 AM
When Steve Jobs took the stage at the Worldwide Developers Conference and unveiled the next version of OS X, Tiger, comparisons were quick to be drawn to Microsoft's Longhorn — some by Apple itself with a few strategically-placed banners. At the time, Longhorn was still packed with the promise of a better search engine, one that seemed to even put Panther’s superior engine to shame. But then Steve demoed Spotlight, and all fears were put to rest. Set to launch in the first half of 2005, Tiger continues to pile on the features, while Longhorn, now looking at a <A HREF="http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=569&ncid=73 8&e=3&u=/nm/20040828/tc_nm/tech_microsoft_windows_dc">2006< /A> target date, is trimming its own. "We've had to make some trade-offs to deliver the features corporate customers, consumers and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) are asking for in a reasonable time frame," said Microsoft group vice president Jim Allchin. Apparently, five years just isn't enough time to properly overhaul an OS. "In developing software, somewhere you have to put a stake in the ground and there's often some hard trade-offs you have to make," said Michael Cherry, a analyst with Directions on Microsoft, an independent researcher based in Kirkland, Washington. The Windows File System, or WinFS for short, is — or rather, was — "the active storage subsystem in Longhorn that is used for searching, organizing, and sharing data. WinFS maintains a store of items and their properties, and provides a system service in Longhorn to retrieve information when it's needed." However a <A HREF="http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/winfs/default.aspx?pull=/lib rary/en-us/dnaero/html/wux_topic_storage.asp">note</A> on the Microsoft Web site reads, "In spite of what may be stated in this content, WinFS is not a feature that will come with the Longhorn Operating System. However, WinFS will be available on the Windows platform at some future date, which is why this article continues to be provided for your information"

Notae Tiger Only?

Notae Tiger Only? 06/17/2005 04:21 PM

Core Data is genius. Sadly, so is the idea of a saved document being a lot of RTF files. I like the recoverability aspect of text(ish) files and I like the searchability and speed of database files.

To move Notae to Core Data would essentially be a re-write, but not a long one. It would have quick searching and generally be a very, very nifty little gadget. Downside is that it would be Tiger-only.

To keep Notae in its current state, and release in a couple of months, would give a recoverable archive and no speedy searching without adding a lot of code I'd rather not write.

So, Tiger-only and a lot of very cool features, or Panther-compatible and a little muted on the fun parts?
